Law firm marketing priced by the case, not the click
A click for a car accident lawyer can cost about thirty times more than a click for a criminal defense lawyer, and the cases are worth very different amounts. We plan search, Local Services Ads, your Google listing, social ads and follow-up email practice area by practice area, inside the attorney advertising rules, and we count consultations and signed cases.
- $90 to $285estimated click cost for "charlotte car accident lawyer", among the most expensive searches anywhere
- $3 to $17estimated click cost for "criminal defense lawyer charlotte"
- 1,900searches a month for "divorce attorney charlotte nc" in the Charlotte area
- 12practice areas we plan for, from injury to estate planning
The short answer
What should law firm marketing do for a practice?
Law firm marketing should sign the cases a firm wants at a cost that makes sense against what each case is worth, practice area by practice area.
That rarely means one budget spread across every service. An injury case can justify hundreds of dollars a click; a divorce or a DWI case cannot, but those searches cost a fraction as much. We split plans by practice area, track every call and form to the consultation and the signed case, and build the compliance review attorney advertising needs into the calendar. Clicks are tracked, but signed cases are the goal.
What law firms need from marketing.
An injury firm, a family law practice and an estate planning office all sell legal help, but they win clients in very different ways. These are the needs we plan around.
-
Spend matched to case value
A contingency injury case and a flat-fee will are different businesses. Each practice area needs its own budget, bids and target cost per signed case.
-
Fast answers to every inquiry
People with a legal problem call several firms and often hire the first that responds. Calls and forms answered late, after hours or not at all waste the ad spend behind them.
-
Ads inside the advertising rules
Attorney advertising rules apply to ads, pages, emails and reviews. Claims stay factual and every piece gets the firm’s review before it runs.
-
Trust before the consultation
Clients choose a lawyer at a hard moment in their lives. Reviews, attorney profiles, clear practice pages and real faces decide who gets the call.
-
The right cases, not every case
Searches bring people outside the practice area, outside the state or looking for free help. Qualifying them early protects attorney time.
-
Referrals and past clients
Many good cases come from other attorneys and former clients. Marketing should keep the firm in front of them, not only chase strangers.
What people search for legal help, in Charlotte and across the US.
Monthly searches and estimated click costs in the Charlotte market by practice area. The gap is the story: injury searches cost $90 or more at the low end, while family, criminal, immigration and estate searches start at a few dollars.
| Search | US / mo | Est. click cost, Charlotte |
|---|---|---|
| personal injury lawyer near me | 301,000 | $96.10 to $288.68 |
| charlotte car accident lawyer | 4,400 | $89.87 to $285.09 |
| divorce lawyer | 246,000 | $6.33 to $37.94 |
| personal injury lawyer charlotte nc | 3,600 | $89.87 to $276.67 |
| dwi lawyer | 165,000 | $5.24 to $55.00 |
| divorce attorney charlotte nc | 2,900 | $6.54 to $38.36 |
| workers compensation attorney | 135,000 | $57.58 to $263.56 |
| immigration lawyer charlotte | 1,600 | $5.36 to $16.96 |
| criminal defense lawyer charlotte | 1,000 | $3.03 to $17.05 |
| estate planning attorney charlotte | 480 | $4.12 to $23.44 |
- Injury search is a national auction
- "charlotte car accident lawyer" runs about $90 to $285 a click because large injury firms bid on every accident search in the region. At those prices, one wasted click costs more than a full day of clicks in many other practice areas.
- Most practice areas cost a fraction
- "divorce attorney charlotte nc" runs about $7 to $38 and "criminal defense lawyer charlotte" about $3 to $17. Search can pay for itself here even for a firm without an injury-sized budget.
- Workers’ comp sits in between
- "workers compensation attorney" draws about 1,300 searches a month in the Charlotte area at $58 or more a click. Firms that handle both injury and workers’ comp need separate budgets for each.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.
A solo family lawyer, a growing criminal defense practice and an injury firm with several attorneys need different plans. Four things set the starting point.
- Your practice areas and goals More injury cases, steadier family law consultations, or estate planning clients for a new attorney. Each practice area starts somewhere different.
- Your timeline Search and Local Services Ads bring calls within weeks. Practice area pages, reviews and video build over a year and lower the cost of every case after.
- Your budget and case value What a signed case is worth sets what a consultation can cost. Injury can carry high click prices; flat-fee work needs cheaper paths.
- Your competition and the rules National injury brands, local firms and the attorney advertising rules shape what to bid on and what to say.
Data sets the starting mix by practice area, ties each signed case to its source, and tells us when to change course.

If a Charlotte law firm came to us, here is how we would start.
This is the plan we would pitch to a real client, built for a fictional Charlotte family law and DWI defense firm with real Charlotte search data. The firm, its phone number and its website are invented. Sample data shows the kind of results a campaign like this tracks; it is not a client result and not a promise.

The keywords, grouped the way we would build the account
The firm does not handle injury cases, so the account stays out of the most expensive auction in law. Each practice area gets its own campaign and budget, so the cost per signed case can be read for each one.
Divorce and custody
People ready to talk to a lawyer about their own case. Clicks cost a fraction of injury searches.
| Search | Charlotte area / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| divorce attorney charlotte nc | 1,900 | $6.54 to $38.36 |
| divorce lawyers near me | 590 | $4.90 to $32.70 |
| child custody lawyer | 390 | $2.47 to $28.60 |
DWI defense
Urgent searches, often at night or on weekends, from people with a court date coming.
| Search | Charlotte area / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| dwi lawyer | 1,900 | $5.24 to $55.00 |
| dwi lawyer charlotte | 210 | $12.30 to $57.74 |

Local Services Ads and the map
Family law and DUI are among the legal practice areas that can run Local Services Ads, which sit above the search ads and charge per lead rather than per click. The firm would complete Google’s checks for its attorneys, and once approved its listing shows a Google Verified badge. We would set the practice areas and hours it wants, answer every lead fast and dispute leads outside its practice. The same reviews feed its Google Business Profile, which carries the “near me” map results.
The Facebook ad
People often research a divorce for months before they call anyone. Social ads keep the firm in mind during that time, with copy that stays factual and promises no outcome, and every ad goes through the firm’s review before it runs.
The email
Many people consult two or three firms before hiring one. A timely, helpful follow-up after the consultation keeps the firm in the decision, and it costs nothing per click.
Thank you for meeting with us
Thank you for speaking with us about your situation. When you are ready, the documents on this list will help us review your case. If anything has changed since we spoke, reply to this email or call the office.
Schedule a follow-upThe landing page the ads send people to
Each practice area gets its own page, so a DWI searcher never lands on a divorce page. The page shows the attorneys, the practice area and a short form or phone number, and nothing that reads as a promise of a result.

What each piece turns into, and how they hand off
- Search and LSA find people ready to hire Calls and consultation requests by practice area.
- The map and reviews build trust Stars, attorney faces and answers decide the call.
- Social and video meet people early Months before they are ready to call.
- Email follows every consultation More consultations turn into signed cases.
How it is all tracked
- Calls and forms by practice areaEvery call from ads, Local Services Ads and the listing, and every form, tagged by practice area and answered or missed.
- Consultations and signed casesConsultations held and cases signed from the firm’s case management software, sent back to the ad platforms as offline conversions.
- Speed to answerHow fast each inquiry was answered, because a slow answer loses cases the ads already paid for.
- One monthly reportSpend, consultations, signed cases and cost per signed case, by practice area and channel.

What has worked for law firms and legal businesses.
These are results the ad and email platforms published for a law firm and for legal businesses. They are those companies’ published results, not ours, and each story shows what we would take from it.
Law firm marketing from Charlotte, for Charlotte firms and beyond.
We are based in Charlotte and plan campaigns for law firms across the region, from Uptown and SouthPark to Concord, Gastonia, Huntersville and Rock Hill, on the search data of the markets each firm serves. Charlotte firms compete with large injury brands that advertise across the whole region, which is why we plan by practice area and case value. We also work with law firms across the US, with each campaign built on its own market’s data and its state’s advertising rules.
The mistakes we see most in law firm marketing.
Most of the waste we find in law firm accounts comes from a few decisions.
One budget for every practice area
When injury, family and criminal searches share a campaign, the expensive clicks eat the budget and nobody can see the cost per signed case for each.
Broad match with no negatives
At $90 a click, searches for free legal aid, forms or legal jobs cost a firm hundreds of dollars a day.
Missed calls after hours
Many legal searches happen in the evening and on weekends. An unanswered call goes straight to the next firm.
Ads sent to the homepage
A DWI searcher who lands on a page about every service the firm offers often leaves. Each practice area needs its own page.
Wording that reads as a promise
Ads and pages that imply a result can break the advertising rules and get pulled. Factual wording and a review before launch avoid that.
Counting leads instead of cases
If signed cases are not tied back to their source, budgets follow call volume instead of the cases the firm actually wants.
Legal practices we plan for.
Each practice area has its own searches, case values and intake. Pages for each one go live one by one.

Our analysis for law firms
Questions law firms ask us.
Do attorney advertising rules apply to our ads?
Yes. Attorney advertising rules apply to ads, pages, emails and how reviews are used. We keep claims factual, avoid wording that implies a result, and build the firm’s own review into the calendar so nothing runs before an attorney has approved it.
Should we run Local Services Ads?
For many practice areas, yes. They show above the search ads, charge per lead and carry a Google Verified badge once the firm passes Google’s checks. We set them up alongside search, not instead of it, and dispute leads outside the practice.
Can a smaller firm compete with large injury firms?
Rarely on the broadest injury searches, where clicks start near $90 in Charlotte. Narrow local searches, the map, practice area pages and referrals often bring better cases for far less, and practice areas outside injury cost a fraction to begin with.
How long until we see signed cases?
Search and Local Services Ads usually bring calls within weeks. Practice area pages, reviews and video take months to build, then lower the cost of every case after. We track consultations and signed cases from the first month.
Do you only work with firms in Charlotte?
No. We are based in Charlotte and work with law firms across the US, with each campaign planned on its own market’s data and its state’s advertising rules.
What do you count as a result?
Consultations and signed cases, and the cost of each by practice area and channel. Calls and clicks are tracked, but never treated as the goal.
