The short answer

What are Google Display ads, and how does Google Display advertising work in 2026?

Image ads on millions of websites and apps, shown to the people most likely to buy from you, and since 2026 run through Google’s Demand Gen campaigns.

Google Display ads are the image ads you see on news sites, blogs, apps and YouTube pages across the Google Display Network. Instead of waiting for a search, Display advertising reaches people while they read and browse: visitors who left your site without calling, past customers, and new people who look like them. Most Display ads today are responsive display ads: you supply images, logos and headlines, and Google shapes them to fit each space.

On May 26, 2026, Google moved Display into Demand Gen. Display Network placements are now managed inside Demand Gen campaigns, next to YouTube, Discover, Gmail and Maps, and Google expects the transition to finish in 2027. We plan Display as one part of your Google Ads management, and Overtop Media Digital Marketing has been a Google Partner managing Display campaigns from Charlotte since 2009.

  • Placements you can seeWe read where every ad appeared and remove the apps and sites that only spend money.
  • Audiences from your own dataPast visitors and customer lists come first, then people who look like your best buyers.
  • Judged on leads, not impressionsCalls, forms and sales are tracked back to the campaign, and that is what we optimize.

What well-run Google Display ads get you.

Display does not wait for demand; it keeps you in the room while buyers make up their minds. Done well, it turns the visitors you already paid for into customers.

A second chance with people who already visited
Most visitors leave before they call. Display remarketing keeps your name and your offer in front of them while they compare.
Familiarity in your own trade area
When locals keep seeing your name on the sites they read, they are more likely to search for you and pick you when the need comes.
New buyers who look like your customers
Lookalike segments in Demand Gen find people who resemble your best customers, not just anyone who reads about your industry.
Reach at a lower cost per view than Search
Display buys attention more cheaply than a search click, which is why it suits awareness and follow-up, as long as it is judged on what it produces.

How we match Google Display ads to your sales cycle.

Before we launch, Overtop Media Digital Marketing looks at your website traffic, customer lists, sales cycle and what a customer is worth, to decide whether Display should run now, later, or not at all.

Where OVERTOP scales fastest

  • Your buyers take days or weeks to decideRemodelers, dealerships, clinics, law firms, schools and B2B services: when people compare before they commit, Display keeps you on their shortlist.
  • You already have traffic worth following upSearch, social and organic visits build the remarketing audiences Display needs; our team turns those visits into a second, cheaper chance at the sale.
  • You want your name known in a defined areaFor local businesses we keep Display to the towns you serve, so awareness spend builds familiarity where you can actually take the job.
  • You have an offer people respond to visuallyFinished projects, products, before and after photos and seasonal offers work in an image ad; we build the creative around them.

Where OVERTOP sequences other channels

  • Your site gets little traffic so farRemarketing audiences are too small to run well. Our specialists build demand and traffic with Search first, then add Display. See Search ads.
  • You need calls this weekDisplay is a follow-up and awareness channel. When the phone has to ring now, we lead with Search and Local Services Ads. See Local Services Ads.
  • You sell a large product catalog onlineFor ecommerce stores, product feeds in Shopping and Performance Max usually come first, with Display remarketing on top. See Shopping ads.
  • Your story needs motion and soundWhen a product has to be shown working, our team leads with video on YouTube inside the same Demand Gen campaigns. See YouTube ads.

How we run Google Display campaigns.

Six parts. Display is the easiest Google Ads budget to spend and the easiest to waste, so each one matters.

Display on the Google Display Network, now built inside Demand Gen

Google is moving every Display campaign into Demand Gen: a migration tool arrived in June 2026, new campaigns will be created only in Demand Gen, and the rest move automatically by 2027. Our team moves client campaigns on our schedule rather than Google’s, keeps them on the Display Network only where that is the plan, carries their history over, and replaces settings that do not exist in Demand Gen, such as Manual CPC and bid adjustments, before anything is switched.

Audiences built from your own data first

The most profitable Display audiences are people who already know you: website visitors, past customers through Customer Match, and people who started a form and stopped. We add lookalike segments of your best customers and custom segments built from the searches and sites your buyers use, and leave broad interest targeting for last, when the data shows it pays.

Placements and exclusions reviewed every week

Left alone, Display budgets drift toward mobile game apps, accidental taps and low-quality sites. We read the placement report every week, exclude what never produces a lead, set content suitability at the account level, and keep your brand away from pages you would not want it next to.

Responsive display ads and creative that earns the look

Responsive display ads take your images, logo, headlines and descriptions and fit them to thousands of ad sizes. We build them from your real work and offers, add a logo to every ad (Demand Gen requires one), test new images on a schedule, and write each headline for the audience that will see it: a returning visitor reads a different ad than a stranger.

Bidding, budget and frequency

Display gets its own budget, never shared with Search, so a cheap impression never takes money from a ready buyer. We start on target CPC or clicks while tracking proves itself, move to target cost per lead once there are enough conversions, and set a frequency limit so the ad stays welcome. Read how we handle Google Ads channel prioritization and budget allocation.

Measurement that counts customers, not views

Display rarely gets the last click, so judging it only on last clicks undersells it, and counting every view as a lead oversells it. We report click and view-through results apart, watch for more searches for your business name, use conversion lift studies where the budget supports them, and send qualified leads and sales back to Google with offline conversion tracking.

Where we recover budget in inherited Display accounts.

When a business comes to Overtop Media Digital Marketing after Display that “never worked”, the budget has usually been leaking in the same few places. Our specialists close them and point the spend at people who buy.

  1. Separating Display from Search campaigns

Search campaigns created with the default settings often show on the Display Network too, mixing cheap views into Search results. We split them, so each budget is judged on its own job.

  2. Taking budget back from mobile apps

Game and utility apps produce accidental taps that look like traffic and never call. We exclude the placements that do not convert and keep the ones that do.

  3. Moving to Demand Gen on our schedule

Campaigns left to migrate automatically can lose settings that no longer exist. We migrate deliberately, with the history carried over and every replacement setting in place first.

  4. Making remarketing welcome again

Remarketing with no frequency limit follows people for months. We cap how often each person sees you and match the audience length to how long your buyers take to decide.

  5. Reporting views and clicks honestly

Accounts that count every view-through as a lead look great and sell nothing. We report them apart and judge Display on calls, leads and sales.

  6. Refreshing creative before it wears out

One set of images running for a year stops being noticed. Our team rotates new images and offers on a schedule and retires what the data says is tired.

How Display works with your other campaigns.

Display rarely closes a sale on its own. It works best when it introduces you before the search and brings people back after the visit.

  1. Display ads work here They discover you Display and video ads show your name to people in your area before they search.
  2. They search Search ads and organic results catch them when they look for what you do.
  3. They compare Display remarketing keeps you in front of visitors who did not call yet.
  4. They call or buy A fast landing page and tracked calls turn the visit into a customer.
  • Google Ads, all campaign types

Search, Performance Max, Shopping, YouTube and Demand Gen share the same account, budget and conversion data as your Display campaigns.

  • Google Search ads

The visitors Search brings in become the audiences Display brings back.

  • Remarketing

Every way Google lets you reach past visitors and customers again, Display included.

  • Performance Max

One campaign across Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail and Maps, for accounts with strong tracking.

  • Google Demand Gen campaigns

The campaign type Display now runs inside, across YouTube, Discover and Gmail.

  • YouTube ads

Video in the same Demand Gen campaigns, for stories that need motion and sound.

  • Facebook and Instagram ads

Reach and retargeting on Meta, planned with the same audiences and goals.

Our approach: your plan depends on you, and the data decides.

Every business is different. For some, Display is the follow-up that makes Search pay; for others it should wait until there is traffic worth following.

  • Your goals Calls, booked jobs, online sales or brand awareness, and what each one is worth to you.
  • Your timeline Leads needed this month, or a name that people know by next season.
  • Your budget What you can invest beyond Search, and how fast it can grow when results come in.
  • Your competition Who else is in front of your buyers, and where they leave room.

Those four decide whether Display should run now, share the budget or wait. After launch, the data picks the direction, confirms each decision and tells us when to change course.

  1. Learn the business

What you sell, where, to whom, how long buyers take to decide, and what a customer is worth.

  2. Check the audiences

How much traffic and how many customer records you have to build Display audiences from.

  3. Build it properly

Demand Gen campaign, audiences, placements, exclusions, creative and tracking, checked before launch.

  4. Launch and learn

Placements and audiences read closely in the first weeks, while the campaign learns what works.

  5. Grow what works

Budget moves to the audiences, placements and offers that produce customers, and video or new channels are added when the data says so.

Proof, in Google’s numbers and ours.

Google publishes what Display inside Demand Gen delivers on average. Our search data shows how far the market still has to catch up with the change.

US searches a month: the old name versus the new home
  • display ads2,900
  • google display ads1,300
  • google display network1,300
  • google demand gen720
  • demand gen google ads590

Buyers and business owners still look for Display by its old names: "google display ads" and "google display network" are each searched about 1,300 times a month in the US, more than the Demand Gen campaigns Display now lives inside. Most agency pages have not caught up either, which is why businesses are still sold Display the way it worked before 2026.

Google’s averages are real, but they are averages. The ROI gain from adding the Display Network comes from accounts that feed Demand Gen the right audiences and conversions, and Google’s own measurement data shows most of what these campaigns produce arrives after the standard windows. That is why we judge Display on leads and sales over the full sales cycle, not on the first week’s clicks.

Questions about Google Display ads.

How much do Google Display ads cost?

You set the budget, and Display is usually paid per click or per conversion goal. A Display click typically costs less than a Search click for the same business, because the person is reading rather than searching. We size the budget from your traffic, your audiences and what a customer is worth to you, and keep it separate from Search. Every client gets a custom plan, so we do not publish price lists.

Is Google getting rid of Display campaigns?

Not the ads, the campaign type. On May 26, 2026 Google announced that Display now has a home in Demand Gen: Display Network placements are managed inside Demand Gen campaigns, a migration tool rolled out from June 2026, new Display campaigns will only be created in Demand Gen, and the remaining ones move automatically, with the transition expected to finish in 2027. Overtop Media Digital Marketing migrates client campaigns deliberately, before the automatic move.

Can my ads still run only on the Google Display Network?

Yes. Demand Gen has channel controls, and Google confirms Display advertisers can still serve ads only on the Display Network. We often start migrated campaigns that way, then test YouTube, Gmail or Discover when the data suggests they would add customers.

What are responsive display ads?

Responsive display ads are Display ads built from your assets: images, logos, headlines and descriptions. Google combines and resizes them to fit almost any ad space on the Display Network. They are supported in Demand Gen, need a business logo, and are reviewed again when a campaign migrates. We build them from your real work and test new images regularly.

Where do Google Display ads appear?

Across the Google Display Network, which Google says covers 2 million sites, videos and apps (March to April 2026 data), and, inside Demand Gen, optionally on YouTube, Discover, Gmail and Maps. We control the list: placements that only spend money are excluded every week.

What is the difference between Display ads and remarketing?

Display is the format and the network; remarketing is one audience strategy. Display ads can reach new people, past visitors or past customers. Remarketing on Google also runs through Search, YouTube and Performance Max, so we plan it across the whole account rather than only on Display.

Do Display ads work for local service businesses?

They work best as a follow-up. A homeowner who visited your site and did not call is far more likely to book after seeing your ad again on a local news site. Display aimed at everyone in a city, with no audience behind it, rarely pays for a local service business, so we start with past visitors and customers.

Do Display ads appear next to content that could hurt my brand?

We set content suitability at the account level, exclude sensitive categories and specific sites or apps, and review the placement report every week, so your ads stay next to content you would be comfortable with.

What results should I judge Display on?

Calls, leads and sales, measured over your real sales cycle. We report click and view-through conversions apart, watch searches for your business name, and where your systems allow it send qualified leads and closed sales back to Google, so the campaign learns from customers instead of clicks.

Do you work as a display advertising agency outside Charlotte?

Yes. Our office is in Charlotte and we know the region well, but we run Google Display advertising for businesses across the Carolinas and the United States. Local or national, you work with the same team and see every lead and every dollar in one report.
