The short answer

What does a Shopify agency do?

It turns Shopify into a store that sells: designed for your products, built to load fast, connected to your systems, and marketed so shoppers actually arrive.

Shopify gives every store a strong starting point. The difference between a store that sells and one that sits quietly comes from the decisions on top of it: how products are organized, how fast pages load, what happens at checkout and how shoppers find the store in the first place. We make those decisions with you, build them, and keep improving them with real sales data. For the marketing side on its own, see our ecommerce marketing service.

  • Design, development and marketing, one teamThe people who build your Shopify store also run the ads, email and SEO that fill it, so the store is built for the traffic it will get.
  • Partners on the platforms that sellA Google Partner, Meta Business Partner, Microsoft Advertising Partner, Klaviyo Partner, Pinterest Business Partner and TikTok Marketing Partner.

Everything your Shopify store needs.

Design, development, a move from another platform, speed, checkout and marketing. Take the parts you need, or have one team handle all of it.

Shopify store design

We start from your brand, your products and how your customers shop, then shape a Shopify theme around them: navigation that matches how people look for your products, product pages that answer questions before they are asked, and collection pages that make browsing easy on a phone. You get a store that looks like your business, not like the demo theme.

Design is tested on real phones before launch, because most shoppers will see it there first.

Shopify development

When a theme cannot do what your business needs, we build it: custom sections your team can edit without code, product options and bundles, subscriptions, wholesale pricing, and connections to your inventory, shipping, accounting and email systems. We keep the number of apps low, because every extra app can slow the store down and add a monthly bill.

For stores that need a fully custom front end, Shopify also supports headless builds; we recommend one only when the business case is clear.

Moving your store to Shopify

We move stores to Shopify from WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento, Wix, Squarespace and older Shopify setups. Products, variants, customers and order history come across, and every old address is redirected to its new page so search rankings, links and bookmarks keep working. We follow Google’s guidance for site moves and watch search traffic closely after launch.

Our checklist follows Google’s guide to site moves with URL changes.

Speed and Core Web Vitals

Slow stores lose sales. We size images for the phone, remove apps and scripts that are not earning their keep, load what is below the fold only when it is needed, and check every template against Google’s Core Web Vitals, so pages appear quickly and do not jump around while they load.

Speed is checked before launch and after every major change, not once.

Checkout and conversion

Shopify’s checkout is one of its strengths, and we set it up to work for you: express payment options, clear shipping costs and delivery dates before checkout, trust signals where shoppers decide, and offers that raise the order value without getting in the way. Then we test changes against real orders, not opinions.

See the checkout research in the section below.

Marketing the store

A new store needs customers. We connect your catalog to Google Merchant Center for Shopping ads, to Meta for catalog ads and to email and SMS for abandoned carts and repeat orders, then run the campaigns. SEO for products and collections is built in from the first day.

A store that looks like your brand, not a template.

Most Shopify stores start from a theme, and that is a good thing: it is fast to launch and easy to update. We choose the right starting point for your products, then shape the layouts, type, colors and photography until the store is unmistakably yours.

New store, redesign or a move to Shopify.

Three ways in, one standard: fast pages, a clean checkout and everything ready for marketing on launch day.

  • A new Shopify store

You are launching online or starting a new brand.

    • Catalog, payments, shipping and tax set up
    • A theme shaped around your products

  • A redesign

Your Shopify store works but looks dated or converts poorly.

    • A fresh design on your existing store
    • Faster pages and a cleaner checkout
    • No lost products, customers or rankings
  • A move to Shopify

Your current platform is costly, slow or hard to manage.

    • Products, customers and orders moved
    • Every old address redirected
    • Search traffic monitored after launch

A checkout that keeps the sale.

Across 50 studies, the average documented cart abandonment rate is 70.22%. In Baymard’s survey of US shoppers, leaving aside people who were only browsing, 40% abandoned because extra costs were too high, 20% because delivery was too slow and 19% because they did not trust the site with their card. Shopify reports that, in a study completed in April 2023 with a large global management consulting firm, its overall conversion rate outpaced competing platforms by an average of 15% and by up to 36%.

  • 70.22%of online shopping carts are abandoned, on average.
  • 8.4%higher retail conversion rates from a mobile site just 0.1 seconds faster.

Shopify SEO, built in from day one.

Shopify handles a lot of SEO basics well, but a few of its habits need attention, and moves to Shopify are where rankings are most often lost. We build SEO into the store instead of patching it on later.

One address per product
Shopify can show the same product under several addresses. We make sure search engines see one, so ranking signals are not split.
Collections that rank
Collection pages answer category searches. We give them useful copy, clean filters and links from the menu.
Product pages that answer
Sizes, materials, delivery and returns on the page, so shoppers and search engines get the full picture.
Nothing lost in a move
Redirects for every old address, mapped before launch and checked after.

Built to be marketed.

A store only sells when shoppers arrive. Because the same team builds the store and runs the marketing, the tracking, product feeds and email signup are ready before launch, and every campaign lands on pages built to convert.

  1. Ads bring shoppersGoogle Shopping, Meta, TikTok and Pinterest show your products to the right people.
  2. Shopify converts themFast pages and a short checkout turn the visit into an order.
  3. Email brings them backAutomated flows turn the first order into the next.

We run Google Shopping and Performance Max, Facebook and Instagram ads, TikTok and Pinterest, and email and text with Klaviyo or Omnisend, both of which connect directly to Shopify. How the channels work together is on our ecommerce marketing page.

Every store is different, so every project is too.

There is no standard Shopify package. Four things shape the plan, and data guides every change after launch.

  • GoalsA launch, more revenue, lower costs or an easier store to run.
  • TimelineReady for a season, a product drop or a steady rollout.
  • BudgetWhat goes into the build, and what is left for marketing.
  • CompetitionWhat shoppers see from the other stores they compare you with.

  2. 2Plan and designPage layouts and designs, approved before code is written.
  3. 3Build and connectTheme work, apps, integrations, tracking and feeds.
  4. 4Test and launchReal phones, real payments, redirects checked, then live.

Questions about Shopify stores.

What does a Shopify agency do?

It designs, builds and improves Shopify stores, and often markets them too. Overtop Media Digital Marketing does all of it: store design, development, moves to Shopify from other platforms, speed and checkout work, and the Google, Meta, email and SEO marketing that brings shoppers to the store.

How much does a Shopify store cost to build?

It depends on what the store has to do. The biggest drivers are the number of products and variants, how much custom design and development is needed, the apps and systems it must connect to, and whether data is being moved from another platform. Shopify’s own plan and any paid apps are separate monthly costs. Every project gets its own quote once we understand the store.

How long does it take to build a Shopify store?

A store built on an existing theme with a modest catalog takes far less time than a custom design or a large migration. What usually sets the pace is content: product photos, descriptions and decisions on shipping and returns. We agree a timeline at the start and plan launches around your selling seasons.

Can you move my store to Shopify without losing search rankings?

Yes, when the move is planned properly. We map every old address to its new page with permanent redirects, keep product and category content, move customers and order history, and watch search traffic after launch so any problem is fixed quickly.

Should I choose Shopify or WooCommerce?

Shopify suits most stores that want hosting, security and checkout handled for them, with less maintenance. WooCommerce can suit stores that need deep control on their own WordPress hosting and have the resources to maintain it. We recommend the platform that fits your catalog, team and budget, and we will tell you plainly if staying where you are is the better choice.

Do you work on Shopify Plus stores?

Yes. The design, development and marketing work is the same on every Shopify plan, including Shopify Plus, with extra options on Plus for things like checkout customization, automation and wholesale.

Can you improve my current theme instead of starting over?

Often, yes. If your theme is current and well built, improving the templates, speed and checkout is faster and cheaper than a redesign. We recommend a new design only when the existing one is holding the store back.

Will apps slow down my Shopify store?

Some do. Each app can add scripts that load on every page. We review the apps you have, remove or replace the ones that cost speed without earning their keep, and build simple features into the theme instead of adding another app.

Do you market the store after launch?

Yes, and we plan for it during the build. Product feeds, tracking, email signup and SEO are set up before launch, so Google Shopping, Meta ads and email flows can start on day one. See our ecommerce marketing service for the full picture.

Who owns the store?

You do. The Shopify account, the theme, your products and your customer data are in your name. We work in your store with staff access, and everything we build stays with you.

Do you work with stores outside Charlotte?

Yes. Online stores sell everywhere, and so do we. We build and market Shopify stores for businesses across the Charlotte metro, the Carolinas and nationwide, from our Charlotte office.
