Google Search ads that turn searches into customers.

When someone types what you sell into Google, your ad should be the answer they choose. Overtop Media Digital Marketing builds and manages Google Search ads around the searches that become customers, keeps out the ones that never will, and judges every campaign on calls, leads and sales, for businesses in Charlotte and across the country.

The short answer

What are Google Search ads, and what does managing them involve?

Picking the searches that turn into customers, writing ads that earn the click, shutting out the searches that never buy, and judging every dollar on calls, leads and sales.

Google Search ads are the sponsored results at the top and bottom of Google, shown to people at the moment they type what you offer. You pay when someone clicks. That makes Search the most direct way to reach a buyer who is already looking, and also the easiest place to waste money, because every unrelated search you pay for is a click that was never going to become a customer.

We run Search as one part of your Google Ads management, planned with the same data and judged on the same results as everything else you run. Overtop Media Digital Marketing has been a Google Partner growing businesses from Charlotte since 2009.

  • Built on your market’s searchesBefore a dollar is spent, we know what your buyers type, how often, and what a click costs, from OVERTOP Search Intelligence.
  • Negative keywords from day oneJobs, how-to, free and unrelated searches are shut out before launch, not after they eat a month of budget.
  • Judged on customers, not clicksCalls, forms and sales are tracked back to the search that produced them, and that is what we optimize.

What well-run Google Search ads get you.

Search catches demand that already exists. Done well, it turns that demand into a steady, measurable flow of customers you can scale up or down.

Calls and leads from people ready to buy
Your ad shows when someone searches for exactly what you do, in the places you serve, while they are deciding.
A cost per customer you can plan around
Because every lead is traced to its search, you know what a new customer costs and where the next dollar should go.
Your name protected
When people search for your business, they find you first, not a competitor bidding on your name.
Fast answers
Search starts producing data the day it launches, which makes it the quickest way to test an offer, a service or a new area.

When Search ads are the right choice, and when they are not.

Search is powerful but not universal. Here is how we decide whether it should lead your plan.

The right choice when

  • People already search for what you sellPlumbers, dentists, lawyers, contractors, clinics, B2B services: if buyers type it, Search can be there.
  • A customer is worth several clicksWhen one job, patient or client pays for many clicks, Search usually pays back fastest.
  • You need results this monthSearch starts reaching buyers on day one; organic rankings take longer to build.
  • You serve a defined areaAds can be limited to your towns, zip codes and opening hours, so local businesses do not pay for clicks they cannot serve.

Start somewhere else when

  • Nobody searches for it yetA new product category needs to be seen before it is searched for. Video and social ads create that demand first. See YouTube ads.
  • You sell a catalog of products onlineShopping ads with your product photos and prices usually beat text ads for online stores. See ecommerce marketing.
  • You are a licensed trade or local proGoogle’s pay-per-lead Local Services Ads can sit above Search ads, and we often run both. See Local Services Ads.
  • Your website cannot turn a visit into a call yetPaying for clicks to a slow or confusing page wastes the budget. We fix the landing page first, then turn on the ads.

How we run Google Search ads.

Six parts, each as important as the ad itself. Leave one out and the money leaks somewhere else.

Structure that follows how you make money

Campaigns split by service and area, ad groups by what the searcher wants, and your own business name kept in a separate campaign so it never props up the results of the rest. Budget then goes to what earns it, instead of being shared by everything at once.

Keywords and match types

We start from what your buyers actually type and how often, then choose match types on purpose: exact and phrase where control matters, broad match only when conversion tracking and smart bidding are strong enough to steer it. Google’s AI Max for Search, which takes over from Dynamic Search Ads in 2027, is tested the same way: against the results of the keywords you already have.

Keyword research comes from OVERTOP Search Intelligence, our analysis of search demand and click costs for your market.

Negative keywords

Negative keywords tell Google which searches never to show your ad for. We build the list before launch (jobs, training, how-to, free, competitors’ support lines, services you do not offer), then read the actual search terms every week and keep adding to it.

In the Charlotte area alone, about 940 plumbing searches a month come from people looking for a job, a class or a how-to video.

Ads, assets and the page they lead to

Responsive search ads give Google up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions to combine. We write them around your real reasons to choose you, add call, location and sitelink assets so the ad takes up more of the page, and send each ad group to a landing page that answers that exact search.

Bidding and budget

Smart bidding works only as well as the conversions it learns from, so we start with clear goals and the right signals, then move to target cost per lead or target return on ad spend once there is enough data. Budgets follow results by service, area and hour of the day.

Tracking that counts customers

We track calls from ads and from your website, forms and bookings, ignore the hang-ups, and where your systems allow it send qualified leads and closed sales back to Google, so bidding learns from customers instead of clicks. Read how we set up offline conversion tracking.

Search ads mistakes we see in almost every account.

When a business tells us Google Ads does not work for them, the cause is usually one of these, and every one of them can be fixed.

  1. Broad keywords with no negative list

The account pays for job seekers, students and do-it-yourselfers. We read the search terms and shut those out first.

  2. Settings nobody chose

Search campaigns can also run on Google’s search partner sites and the Display Network, and the location setting can reach people outside your area who are only interested in it. We choose each of these on purpose.

  3. Counting the wrong conversions

Page views, ten-second calls and spam forms teach smart bidding to find more of the same. We count only what a customer would do.

  4. Your business name mixed into everything

Searches for your own name convert cheaply and make weak campaigns look strong. We report them separately.

  5. Every ad sent to the home page

Someone searching for water heater replacement should land on water heaters, with a phone number and a reason to call.

  6. Set and forget

Searches, competitors and costs change every week. We review search terms, bids and budgets on a schedule, not when someone remembers.

How Search works with your other campaigns.

Search collects demand; it rarely creates it. That is why it works best as one part of a plan, with each campaign doing the job it is best at.

  1. They discover you Video and social ads introduce you to people who are not searching yet.
  2. Search ads work here They search Search ads and organic results catch them when they look for what you do.
  3. They compare Remarketing keeps you in front of people who visited but did not call yet.
  4. They call or buy A fast landing page and tracked calls turn the visit into a customer.
  • Google Ads, all campaign types

Performance Max, Shopping, Display, YouTube and Demand Gen share the same account, budget and conversion data as your Search campaigns.

  • Local Services Ads

For licensed trades and local professionals, the pay-per-lead badge above the Search ads.

  • Microsoft Ads

The same kind of searches on Bing, set up from your Google campaigns and then managed on their own data.

  • YouTube ads

Video that makes more people search for your name, which your Search ads then collect at the lowest cost.

  • SEO

Organic rankings for the same searches; the paid data shows which keywords are worth ranking for.

  • Facebook and Instagram ads

Reach people by interests and life events before they know what to search for.

Our approach: your plan depends on you, and the data decides.

Every business is different. Search alone is right for some; for others it is one of several campaign types and channels working together.

  • Your goals Calls, booked jobs, online sales or qualified B2B leads, and what one is worth to you.
  • Your timeline Results needed this month, or a steady build over the next year.
  • Your budget What you can invest in ad spend, and how fast it can grow when results come in.
  • Your competition Who else bids on your searches, how hard, and where they leave openings.

Those four decide whether Search should lead, share the budget or wait. After launch, the data picks the direction, confirms each decision and tells us when to change course.

Budget moves to the services, areas and hours that produce customers, and new campaign types are added when the data says so.

Proof, in Google’s numbers and ours.

Google publishes what its newest Search features deliver on average. Our market data shows where the money goes. Together they explain why the setup decides the results.

  • 14% more conversions or conversion value, at a similar cost, for advertisers who turn on AI Max for Search. Google, May 2025
  • 27% more unique converting users for Search campaigns using Smart Bidding Exploration. Google, Marketing Live 2026
  • 7% more conversions or conversion value from AI Max’s full feature set than from its search term matching alone. Google, April 2026
Top-of-page click cost in the Charlotte area, by search
  • emergency plumber$119.88
  • plumber$83.03
  • plumber near me$76.42
  • plumber cost$33.51
  • plumbing school$3.66
  • plumbing jobs$2.28

The searches that bring customers cost the most, because every competitor wants them. "Emergency plumber" costs more per click than "plumber" because the person typing it needs help now. That premium is worth paying, as long as the account is not also paying for the cheap searches from people who will never hire.

Google’s averages are real, but they are averages. AI Max and smart bidding find more customers only when the account feeds them the right conversions and keeps the wrong searches out, which is the work this page describes, and why we size every market before launch instead of guessing.

Questions about Google Search ads.

How much do Google Search ads cost?

You set the budget, and you pay only when someone clicks. What a click costs depends on your industry, area and competition: in the Charlotte area a top-of-page click for "emergency plumber" can cost more than $100, while many other searches cost a few dollars. We size the budget from what a customer is worth to you and the searches in your market before you spend. Every client gets a custom plan, so we do not publish price lists.

How long does it take to see results from Search ads?

Ads can show the day they launch, so calls and leads often start within days. The first weeks are a learning period: we read the search terms closely, add negative keywords and adjust bids, and results usually steady as the account collects conversion data. Most accounts are judged fairly after one to three months of clean data.

What is the difference between Search ads and Performance Max?

Search ads show on Google search results for the keywords you choose, with full control over keywords, negatives and ad text. Performance Max is one campaign that runs across Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover and Maps, with Google’s automation choosing where to show. Many accounts use both: Search for the searches you must own, Performance Max to find more customers once tracking is solid.

Do you use broad match keywords?

Only when they earn it. Broad match can find valuable searches you would never think of, but it needs reliable conversion tracking, smart bidding and a strong negative keyword list. Until those are in place we lean on exact and phrase match, then test broad match and AI Max for Search features against them on results.

What is AI Max for Search, and should I use it?

AI Max is a set of Google features added to a Search campaign: it matches your ads to more searches than your keywords alone, writes headline variations from your site and ads, and can send people to the most relevant page. Google reports that advertisers who turn it on typically see 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar cost per acquisition or return on ad spend (Google internal data, 2025). It also replaces Dynamic Search Ads in 2027. We test it against your existing keywords and keep it where your own results improve, with brand and location controls set first.

Can my Search ads appear in Google’s AI Overviews?

Yes, in the US and many other markets ads can appear above, below and, in English, inside AI Overviews. Google places them automatically: there is no separate targeting or opt-out, and showing inside an AI Overview requires broad match or keywordless targeting such as AI Max, Performance Max or Shopping. It is one more reason to have clean conversion tracking and a strong negative keyword list before loosening match types.

Can my ads show only in my city or service area?

Yes. We target the cities, zip codes or radius you serve, and set the location option so your ads reach people in or regularly in those places rather than anyone interested in them. We can also show ads only during the hours you answer the phone.

Do I need a landing page for Search ads?

You need a page that answers the search. Sending a water heater search to your home page loses people who wanted water heaters. If your site does not have the right pages, we build or fix them before turning on the ads, so the budget is not spent on visits that cannot convert.

How do you track calls from Search ads?

Calls from the ad’s call button are tracked by Google, and calls from your website are tracked with a forwarding number tied to the visit. We count calls that last long enough to be real conversations, and where your systems allow it we send booked jobs and sales back to Google so bidding learns from customers.

Do you run Search ads for businesses outside Charlotte?

Yes. Our office is in Charlotte and we know the region well, but we run Google Search ads for businesses across the Carolinas and the United States. Local or national, you work with the same team and see every lead and every dollar in one report.
