The short answer

What are Google Demand Gen campaigns, and what do they do for a business in 2026?

One Google Ads campaign that shows your video and image ads on YouTube, Discover, Gmail, Maps and the Display Network, to people who look like your best customers, before they search.

Google Demand Gen campaigns are Google’s campaign type for creating demand rather than waiting for it. One campaign runs your video and image ads across YouTube Shorts, in-stream and in-feed, Google Discover, Gmail, Google Maps and the Google Display Network, aimed at lookalike segments of your customers, your website visitors and people searching for what you do. Demand Gen replaced Discovery ads in 2023, absorbed Video action campaigns (the last ones were upgraded in April 2026), and since May 2026 is where Display campaigns live too.

That makes Demand Gen the part of your Google Ads management that fills the top of the funnel: the people who become your branded searches, your remarketing audiences and your customers next month. Overtop Media Digital Marketing has been a Google Partner managing these campaigns from Charlotte since 2009. • Video and images, made for each screenVertical for Shorts, wide for in-stream, carousels for Gmail and Discover.
  • Judged on customers, not viewsLeads and sales over your real sales cycle, with branded search lift alongside.

What well-run Google Demand Gen campaigns get you.

Search catches the people already looking. Demand Gen reaches the much larger group who will need you soon, so more of them search for you by name when they do.

New buyers who look like your customers
Lookalike segments find people who resemble your best customers, on the apps they open every day, instead of anyone who once read about your industry.
More people searching for you by name
A buyer who has seen your crew, your product or your results in a Short or a Gmail carousel is more likely to search for your business, and branded searches are the cheapest leads in Google Ads.
Video and images in one campaign
Short videos, product shots and carousels run side by side, so each person sees the format that suits the screen they are on.
Reach your competitors are not buying yet
Most local businesses still spend everything on Search. Demand Gen reaches your market earlier, when there is no auction for their attention yet.

How we match Demand Gen to your business.

Before we launch, Overtop Media Digital Marketing looks at your customer data, your creative, your sales cycle and what a customer is worth, to decide whether Demand Gen should run now, later, or not at all.

Where OVERTOP scales fastest

  • What you sell is easy to showFinished projects, products in use, before and after, a team people can trust on camera: when a few seconds of video sells the idea, Demand Gen gives it reach.
  • Search is already working and has hit a ceilingWhen you already win most of the searches in your market, more Search budget buys less. Our specialists add Demand Gen to grow the number of people who search for you.
  • You have customer data to build fromA customer list, CRM records or steady website traffic give us the seed for lookalike segments, which is where Demand Gen does its best work.
  • You also advertise on Facebook, Instagram or TikTokDemand Gen reaches the same kind of feed audience on YouTube, Gmail and Discover, and our team plans both with the same audiences and goals.

Where OVERTOP sequences other channels

  • You need the phone to ring this weekDemand Gen builds next month’s demand. When calls are needed now, we lead with Search and Local Services Ads. See Search ads.
  • You sell a large product catalog onlineFor ecommerce stores, product feeds in Shopping and Performance Max usually come first, with Demand Gen added for new customers. See Shopping ads.
  • You only want image ads on websites and appsThen the plan is Display Network placements, which we still run inside Demand Gen with the other channels switched off. See Display ads.
  • Your goal is brand reach on YouTube and TV screensFor awareness, reach and views on connected TVs, our team uses YouTube’s video reach and view campaigns instead. See YouTube ads.

How we run Google Demand Gen campaigns.

Six parts. Demand Gen rewards good inputs more than any other campaign type, so each one decides the result.

Channels chosen on purpose, across YouTube, Discover, Gmail, Maps and Display

A Demand Gen campaign can run on YouTube Shorts, in-stream and in-feed, Discover, Gmail, Maps and the Display Network. Google’s default is all of them; our team starts with the channels your buyers use and your creative suits, reads results channel by channel, and opens or closes each one on what it produces. Former Video action and Display campaigns now live here too, and we rebuild inherited ones rather than leave them on their upgraded defaults.

Lookalike segments seeded from real customers

Lookalike segments are the reason Demand Gen exists, and they are only as good as the list they start from. We build seed lists from your customers who bought, signed or came back, not from every form fill, then test narrow, balanced and broad reach against each other. Website visitors, custom segments built from the searches your buyers make, and exclusions for current customers complete the targeting.

Video and images, cut for every screen

Google’s own data says advertisers who use both video and images in Demand Gen get more conversions at the same cost. We plan creative around that: vertical video for Shorts, horizontal for in-stream, square and portrait images and carousels for Discover and Gmail, and a logo on every ad. Your own footage, filmed on a phone, often beats a studio production on these screens, and we tell you what to film and cut it for each one.

Bidding, budget and pacing

Demand Gen gets its own budget, never shared with Search, so a cheap view never takes money from a ready buyer. We start on clicks or conversions while tracking proves itself, move to target cost per lead or return on ad spend once Google has enough results to learn from, and give each change time to settle. Read how we handle Google Ads channel prioritization and budget allocation.

Measurement over your real sales cycle

Demand Gen rarely gets the last click. Google’s own measurement data says most of its conversions arrive after the usual 30-day click and 3-day engaged-view windows, so a campaign judged in its first week is judged too early. We report click and engaged-view results apart, watch searches for your business name, use conversion lift studies where the budget supports them, and send qualified leads and sales back to Google with offline conversion tracking.

Creative refreshed before it wears out

Feed audiences scroll fast and tire of an ad quickly. Our team reads which videos and images hold attention and produce leads, retires the ones that fade, and adds new cuts and offers on a schedule, so the campaign keeps learning instead of slowing down.

Where we recover budget in inherited Demand Gen accounts.

When a business comes to Overtop Media Digital Marketing after Demand Gen that “did not work”, the budget has usually been leaking in the same few places. Our specialists close them and point the spend at people who buy.

  1. Rebuilding upgraded video campaigns

Video action campaigns were upgraded to Demand Gen automatically, on settings chosen for a different campaign type. We rebuild them around your goals, audiences and channels.

  2. Reseeding lookalikes from customers

Lookalikes seeded from every lead copy the weak leads too. We seed them from customers who bought, so Google finds more people like your best buyers.

  3. Adding the missing format

Accounts that run only video or only images leave results on the table. We add the other format, cut for each screen.

  4. Judging it over the right window

Campaigns paused after a week of weak last-click numbers never get to show what they do. We judge Demand Gen over your sales cycle, with branded search and lift alongside.

  5. Separating the budget from Search

Shared budgets let cheap views take money from ready buyers. Demand Gen gets its own budget and its own targets.

  6. Retiring tired creative

One video running for months stops being watched. Our team rotates new cuts and offers on a schedule and retires what the data says has faded.

How Demand Gen works with your other campaigns.

Demand Gen creates the demand the rest of your Google Ads account captures. It pays off when the pieces are planned together.

  1. Demand Gen works here They discover you Demand Gen shows your video and images on YouTube, Discover and Gmail before they search.
  2. They search Search ads and Performance Max catch them when they look for what you do.
  3. They compare Remarketing, inside Demand Gen and Display, keeps you in front of visitors who did not call yet.
  4. They call or buy A fast landing page and tracked calls turn the visit into a customer.
  • Google Ads, all campaign types

Search, Performance Max, Shopping, Display and YouTube share the same account, budget and conversion data as your Demand Gen campaigns.

  • Google Display ads

Display Network placements now run inside Demand Gen; when only websites and apps are the plan, we switch the other channels off.

  • Remarketing

The people Demand Gen introduces become the visitors remarketing brings back, on Search, YouTube and Display.

  • Performance Max

Performance Max chases conversions across every channel; Demand Gen gives us control over who sees which creative, where.

  • Google Search ads

Search catches the branded and category searches that Demand Gen creates.

  • YouTube ads

Reach and view campaigns for brand awareness on YouTube and TV screens, next to Demand Gen for leads and sales.

  • Facebook and Instagram ads

Feed and Reels ads on Meta, planned with the same audiences, creative and goals.

Our approach: your plan depends on you, and the data decides.

Every business is different. For some, Demand Gen is what lifts Search past its ceiling; for others it should wait until tracking and creative are ready.

  • Your goals Calls, booked jobs, online sales or new customers, and what each one is worth to you.
  • Your timeline Leads needed this month, or more people searching for you by next season.
  • Your budget What you can invest beyond Search, and how fast it can grow when results come in.
  • Your competition Who else is in your buyers’ feeds, and where they leave room.

Those four decide whether Demand Gen should run now, share the budget or wait. After launch, the data picks the direction, confirms each decision and tells us when to change course.

  1. Learn the business

What you sell, where, to whom, how long buyers take to decide, and what a customer is worth.

  2. Check the inputs

Your customer data, your traffic and the footage and photos you already have.

  3. Build it properly

Channels, lookalike segments, creative for each screen, exclusions and tracking, checked before launch.

  4. Launch and learn

Channels, audiences and creative read closely while the campaign learns what works.

  5. Grow what works

Budget moves to the audiences, channels and videos that produce customers, and new creative is added on a schedule.

Proof, in Google’s numbers and ours.

Google publishes what Demand Gen delivers on average. Our search data shows how many buyers still look for it by its old name.

US searches a month: Demand Gen and its old Discovery name
  • google demand gen720
  • demand gen google ads590
  • demand gen campaigns390
  • youtube video discovery ads170
  • google discovery ads140
  • discovery ads140

Demand Gen replaced Discovery ads in 2023, yet the old names are still searched about 540 times a month in the US, close to the 720 searches for "google demand gen" itself. Plenty of accounts are still run the Discovery way too: images only, broad audiences and last-click judgement.

Google’s averages are real, but they are averages. The gains come from accounts that feed Demand Gen the right audiences, both formats of creative and real conversion data, and Google’s own measurement shows most results arrive after the standard windows. That is why we judge Demand Gen on leads and sales over the full sales cycle. Google also reported a 26% increase in conversions per dollar (February to March 2025 data) and 20% more conversions at the same cost per action for advertisers using video and images together (January to February 2024 data).

Questions about Google Demand Gen campaigns.

What is the difference between Demand Gen and Performance Max?

Performance Max runs across every Google channel, Search included, and decides on its own where each dollar goes, chasing conversions wherever they are cheapest. Demand Gen runs only on the visual channels (YouTube, Discover, Gmail, Maps and Display) and gives us control over audiences, channels and which creative each person sees. We usually run Performance Max or Search to capture demand and Demand Gen to create it.

What happened to Discovery ads and Video action campaigns?

Google replaced Discovery ads with Demand Gen in 2023. Video action campaigns were upgraded to Demand Gen in batches from July 2025, with the final batch in April 2026. Since May 2026 Display campaigns are moving into Demand Gen as well. Overtop Media Digital Marketing rebuilds upgraded campaigns around each client’s goals rather than leaving them on the automatic settings.

How much do Google Demand Gen campaigns cost?

You set the budget, and you pay for clicks or conversions depending on the bidding we choose. A Demand Gen click usually costs less than a Search click for the same business, because the person is browsing rather than searching. We size the budget from your audiences, your creative and what a customer is worth to you, and keep it separate from Search. Every client gets a custom plan, so we do not publish price lists.

Do I need video to run Demand Gen?

No, Demand Gen runs image ads and carousels too, but Google’s data shows advertisers using both video and images get more conversions at the same cost. Short, simple footage of your work or product, filmed on a phone, is usually enough, and our team plans what to film and cuts it for Shorts, in-stream and the feeds.

What are lookalike segments?

Lookalike segments are audiences Google builds from a seed list you provide, usually your customers, finding people with similar characteristics. They come in narrow, balanced and broad reach. We seed them from customers who actually bought or signed, not from every lead, because the seed decides who Google looks for.

Can Demand Gen work for a local service business?

Yes, when the work is visual and the buyer takes time to decide: remodelers, landscapers, roofers, clinics, dealerships, schools. We keep the campaign to your service area, use footage of your own projects, and judge it on quote requests, calls and branded searches.

How long does Demand Gen take to show results?

Expect the first weeks to be learning while Google finds who responds. Google’s own measurement data says most Demand Gen conversions arrive after the standard 30-day click and 3-day engaged-view windows, so we judge it over your sales cycle, not in its first week.

Is Demand Gen the same as B2B demand generation?

No. Demand generation is a B2B marketing discipline; Google Demand Gen is a specific Google Ads campaign type. We use Google Demand Gen campaigns for B2B clients as well as consumer businesses, alongside LinkedIn Ads and Search, but this page is about the Google campaign type.

Should I run Demand Gen or Meta ads?

Often both. Demand Gen reaches people on YouTube, Gmail and Discover; Meta reaches them on Facebook and Instagram. Google says Demand Gen can help social advertisers reach up to 3 billion monthly users (Google, July 2023 data). We plan both with the same audiences and creative, and move budget to whichever produces customers at the better cost.

Do you manage Demand Gen campaigns outside Charlotte?

Yes. Our office is in Charlotte and we know the region well, but we run Google Demand Gen campaigns for businesses across the Carolinas and the United States. Local or national, you work with the same team and see every lead and every dollar in one report.
