Nonprofits and community
Nonprofit marketing in Charlotte and nationwide
Donors, volunteers, members, visitors and the people a nonprofit serves all find it in different ways. We plan Google Ad Grants, paid search, social ads, video and email as one program, so every channel does the job it does best and every gift, sign-up and visit is counted.
- 18,100searches a month for "churches near me" in the Charlotte area
- 2,400Charlotte-area searches a month for "volunteer opportunities charlotte nc"
- 4,400searches for "food bank charlotte" in October and November, more than three times December
- $6 to $21estimated click cost for "donation" in the Charlotte area
The short answer
What does good nonprofit marketing do?
Good nonprofit marketing turns attention into the actions a mission depends on: first gifts, monthly givers, volunteer shifts, event seats and people reaching the services they need.
Most nonprofit agencies start and stop at Google Ad Grants, the program that gives qualifying nonprofits up to $10,000 a month in Google search ads. It is a strong tool, and we manage it, but effective marketing strategies for nonprofits go beyond search, because grant rules keep you away from the most expensive giving terms. We plan the grant next to paid non profit ads, Facebook and Instagram, video, email and the website, and measure every channel on gifts, givers and sign-ups, not on clicks.
What nonprofits and community organizations need from marketing.
A food pantry, a church, an arts center and a chamber of commerce ask people for very different things. These are the jobs we plan around.
-
First gifts that become monthly giving
A one-time gift is the start. The value is in the second gift and the monthly giver, so the plan is measured on retention, not only on new donors.
-
Volunteers who show up
Sign-ups only matter when people come to the shift. Reminders and easy rescheduling decide how many of them actually arrive.
-
People who need help, finding it
For pantries, clinics and shelters, the people the mission serves search too. Accurate hours, the map and clear pages matter as much as any appeal.
-
Campaigns timed to giving seasons
Giving Tuesday, year-end giving, Easter and Christmas services each bring a short, sharp peak. A campaign that starts in December misses most of it.
-
Members, visitors and event seats
Churches use church ads and local listings to welcome first-time visitors, associations need members and sponsors, and arts groups need tickets. Each needs its own message and its own count.
-
Trust before the gift
Donors look for the 501(c)(3) status, where the money goes and real stories before they give. Pages that hide them lose the gift at checkout.
What people search for when they give, volunteer or look for help, in Charlotte and across the US.
Monthly searches and estimated click costs in the Charlotte market. Searches about volunteering and finding a pantry or a church are large and cheap per click; searches about giving money cost far more, because national charities bid on them.
| Search | US / mo | Est. click cost, Charlotte |
|---|---|---|
| churches near me | 1,220,000 | $1.09 to $18.93 |
| food pantry near me | 368,000 | $1.05 to $20.00 |
| churches in charlotte nc | 4,400 | $2.58 to $20.00 |
| volunteer opportunities charlotte nc | 2,900 | $0.55 to $20.00 |
| volunteer opportunities near me | 90,500 | $0.44 to $6.65 |
| donation | 74,000 | $6.12 to $21.10 |
| charlotte nonprofits | 720 | $2.11 to $20.00 |
| donate food near me | 22,200 | $2.24 to $20.00 |
| giving tuesday | 18,100 | $0.84 to $15.04 |
| food drive near me | 12,100 | $0.96 to $10.81 |
- Giving is seasonal, and early
- "giving tuesday" runs at 20 to 50 Charlotte-area searches most months and jumps to about 880 in November and 1,000 in December. "food bank charlotte" reaches about 4,400 in October and November against 1,300 in December. Appeals that launch in December arrive after the peak.
- Churches have the largest audience
- "churches near me" draws about 18,100 Charlotte-area searches a month, steady all year, with short peaks such as "christmas eve service near me" at about 1,300 in December.
- Volunteer clicks are cheap, gift clicks are not
- "volunteer opportunities charlotte nc" starts around $0.55 a click, while "donation" starts above $6. Mission searches like volunteering and finding help suit the grant; the costly giving searches usually need a paid budget.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.
A neighborhood pantry, a church with two campuses and a regional association need different plans. Four things set the starting point.
- Your mission goals More monthly givers, a full volunteer roster, a sold-out gala, new members or more people reaching a program. Each starts somewhere different.
- Your calendar Search and Ad Grants bring sign-ups within weeks. Email lists, video and SEO build over months, ahead of Giving Tuesday and year-end.
- Your budget and the grant Whether the organization qualifies for Ad Grants, and what a donor is worth over several years, set what paid channels can spend.
- Your competition National charities, larger churches and well-known causes bid on the same giving searches and set what a local appeal has to say.
Data sets the starting mix between grant and paid spend, ties each gift and sign-up to its source, and tells us when to change course.

If a Charlotte food pantry came to us, here is how we would start.
This is the plan we would pitch to a real client, built for a fictional east Charlotte food pantry using real Charlotte search data. The pantry, its phone number and its website are invented. Sample data shows the kind of results a campaign like this tracks; it is not a client result and not a promise.

How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent
Food help and volunteering are mission searches with cheap clicks, so they run on the Google Ad Grants account. Giving searches cost more and compete with national charities, so they run in a separate paid account with their own budget.
Food help (Ad Grants)
Neighbors looking for a pantry that is open now. The most important searches for the mission, and the ones where wrong hours cost the most trust.
| Search | Charlotte area / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| food pantry near me | 3,600 | $1.05 to $20.00 |
| food bank near me | 3,600 | $0.96 to $14.56 |
| food pantry near me open today | 590 | $1.09 to $20.00 |
Volunteering (Ad Grants)
People in Charlotte looking for a place to give their time. Cheap clicks and steady demand, with a rise before the holidays.
| Search | Charlotte area / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| volunteer opportunities charlotte nc | 2,400 | $0.55 to $20.00 |
| volunteer opportunities near me | 1,000 | $0.44 to $6.65 |
| volunteering near me | 320 | $0.53 to $4.33 |
Giving (paid account)
People ready to give food or money. Fewer searches and higher click costs, with sharp peaks in November and December.
| Search | Charlotte area / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| donation | 880 | $6.12 to $21.10 |
| donate food near me | 260 | $2.24 to $20.00 |
| giving tuesday | 210 | $0.84 to $15.04 |
| food drive near me | 170 | $0.96 to $10.81 |

- snap application
Job seekers, plasma and blood donors, car donation searches and people needing court-ordered service hours all click pantry ads. Excluding them keeps the grant click-through rate healthy and the paid budget on real donors.

Each intent group gets message-matched ad copy engineered by our specialists to qualify buyers before the click and lift expected click-through rate.

The Google listing and the map
For someone searching "food pantry near me open today", the map listing is often the whole decision. It carries the distribution days and hours, holiday closures, what to bring, the address and parking, and a link to volunteer and give. When the hours on the listing are wrong, a family makes a wasted trip, so the listing is kept current before any ad runs.
The Facebook ad
Most donors are not searching when they decide to give. Facebook and Instagram reach people near the pantry with real stories in October and November, so the year-end ask lands with people who already know the name.
The email
A quick, specific thank-you after the first gift, followed by an invitation to give monthly, turns one-time donors into the steady income a pantry plans around, and it costs nothing per click.
Thank you for feeding your neighbors
This week your gift helped stock fresh produce and groceries for families who visit the pantry. Hunger does not stop after the holidays, so many of our donors give a small amount every month. If that works for you, it takes a minute to set up and you can change it any time.
Make my gift monthlyThe landing page the ads send people to
Grant and paid ads never send people to the homepage. Givers land on a short donation page with monthly giving as the default choice, volunteers on the shift sign-up, and people seeking food on the hours and what-to-bring page.

Google Ad GrantsThe grant runs the mission searches
Qualifying 501(c)(3) nonprofits can receive up to $10,000 a month in search ads on Google.com through Google Ad Grants, and more ads can be bought in a separate account. We would run food help and volunteering here and keep the account inside Google's program rules: a 5% click-through rate each month, conversion tracking with at least one conversion a month, no single-word keywords and at least two sitelinks.
YouTubeA two-minute story before year-end
A short video of a distribution day, shown to people near the pantry who searched for volunteering or giving, so the year-end appeal arrives from a name they have seen at work.
What each piece turns into, and how they hand off
- The grant meets mission searches Food help visits and volunteer sign-ups.
- Paid search catches givers First gifts at the giving peaks.
- Social and video tell the story Neighbors know the pantry before the ask.
- Email turns gifts into giving Monthly givers and returning volunteers.
How our team tracks calls, bookings and revenue
- Gifts and their valueEvery online gift from the donation platform, one-time or monthly, with its amount, sent back to Google and Meta so bidding follows dollars raised, not page views.
- Volunteer sign-ups and shifts workedSign-ups by source from the volunteer scheduling tool, and how many of them came to their shift.
- Grant complianceThe Ad Grants click-through rate and conversions watched every month, so the account never risks deactivation.
- One monthly reportGifts, monthly givers, volunteers, food help visits and cost per gift, by channel, with the grant and the paid budget kept apart.
Sample monthly report: grant and paid search
$1,000 sample monthly paid budget for giving, plus $1,300 of Google Ad Grants spend: $1,000 food help, $300 volunteering
| Metric | Sample | Built from |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated cost per click | $1.01, $0.52, $4.15 | Food help, volunteering and giving: low end of the Charlotte estimated click cost for each group’s keywords, weighted by searches (OVERTOP Search Intelligence) |
| Food help visits and calls | 81 | 989 clicks ($1,000 of grant) times 8.18%, the all-industries conversion rate in the LocaliQ 2026 search benchmarks, the closest published figure (LocaliQ has no nonprofit category) |
| Volunteer sign-ups | 47 | 578 clicks ($300 of grant) times the same 8.18% |
| Online gifts from paid search | 20 | $1,000 at $4.15 a click (241 clicks), times the same 8.18% |
| Cost per online gift | $50 | Paid budget divided by 20 gifts; the grant clicks cost the pantry nothing |
| Why the grant is not fully used | $1,300 of up to $10,000 | The 1,567 grant clicks are about 1 in 7 of the 11,510 monthly Charlotte-area searches for the six grant keywords; in one city, search demand, not the grant, sets the limit |
| New monthly givers | 4 | Sample: assumes about one in five first-time online donors moves to monthly giving through the thank-you emails |

What has worked for nonprofits and community organizations.
These are results the email platforms published for a YMCA, a public media station, an aviation museum and a meditation nonprofit with centers across the US. They are those organizations’ published results, not ours, and each story shows what we would take from it.
Nonprofit marketing from Charlotte, for Charlotte causes and beyond.
We are based in Charlotte and plan campaigns for charities, churches, associations and community organizations across the region, from Huntersville and Concord to Gastonia and Rock Hill, on the search data of the neighborhoods each one serves. Local giving and volunteering searches are small and seasonal, so the plan is built on the real numbers for each area. We also work with nonprofits across the US, including national causes that raise money far beyond their home city.
Six donor and grant leaks we fix for nonprofits.
When we audit nonprofit, foundation and ministry accounts, we rebuild these six areas first to protect Google Ad Grants compliance and grow recurring donations.
Actively governing Google Ad Grants compliance and conversion tracking
Ad Grants accounts that slip below a 5% click-through rate or lose conversion tracking risk suspension. We manage keyword quality, negatives and conversion events every month.
Pairing Google Ad Grants with paid social, video and email appeals
The $10,000 monthly grant covers text search only. We pair grant traffic with Meta, YouTube and email storytelling where recurring donors and sponsors make giving decisions.
Routing donors, volunteers and program applicants to dedicated pages
A monthly donor, a Saturday volunteer and a family seeking services each need a different path. We build focused landing pages for giving, volunteering and community programs.
Passing exact donation amounts back to ad platforms
When every gift is counted as a flat conversion, bidding treats a $15 gift the same as a $1,000 gift. We pass actual donation values so campaigns find higher-capacity supporters.
Launching GivingTuesday and year-end campaigns in October
Charitable giving searches and donor inbox attention climb in October and November. We launch audience building and early appeals ahead of the December rush.
Converting one-time donors into monthly sustainers through automated email
Without immediate impact updates and a clear monthly-giving invitation, most first-time donors give only once. We build automated welcome and sustainer-upgrade flows.
Organizations we plan for.

Questions nonprofits ask us.
Is our organization eligible for Google Ad Grants?
In the US, the organization needs 501(c)(3) status and a verified Google for Nonprofits account. Government entities, hospitals and schools are not eligible, although their charitable foundations can be. Google lists the details in its eligibility guidelines.
Can we run Ad Grants and paid Google Ads together?
Yes. Google allows paid ads in a separate account. We usually keep mission searches on the grant and run the costly giving searches, and campaigns the grant rules do not allow, in the paid account, with one report covering both.
Our Ad Grants account was deactivated. Can it come back?
Usually, yes. Google lets organizations request reinstatement once the account meets the rules again, such as the monthly click-through rate, conversion tracking and sitelinks. We find the cause, fix the account and request it.
Do churches and faith communities qualify?
Churches that hold 501(c)(3) status can apply. For churches, the Google listing, local search and the weeks before Easter and Christmas usually matter most, with Ad Grants added where the church qualifies.
What does nonprofit marketing cost?
It depends on the goals, the channels and whether the grant covers part of the search work. We set a target cost per gift, per monthly giver and per sign-up from what each is worth to the organization, then move budget to what brings them.
Do you only work with Charlotte nonprofits?
No. We are based in Charlotte and work with charities, churches, associations and community organizations across the US, with each campaign built on its own market’s data.
