Charity marketing in Charlotte and nationwide that turns neighbors into donors

In the Charlotte area, far more people search for a charity store, a place to volunteer or someone to pick up a couch than for a charity to give money to. We plan Google Ad Grants, paid search, Facebook and Instagram, video and email around the shoppers, goods donors and volunteers a charity already meets, and measure how many of them become givers.

  • 49,500Charlotte-area searches a month for "charity stores near me", rising to 60,500 in July and August 2026
  • 710Charlotte-area searches a month across five terms for a local charity to give to, such as "charlotte nonprofits"
  • $0.55low end of the estimated click cost for "volunteer charlotte", against $6.12 for "donation"
  • $10.77low end of the estimated click cost for "donate car to charity" in Charlotte, up to $44.84

The short answer

What does charity marketing have to deliver?

Charity marketing has to deliver donors who give a second time: monthly givers, goods donors who come back, volunteers who bring friends and shoppers who learn what their purchase funds, not one-off clicks on a December appeal.

In the charity accounts we review, the year-end appeal gets most of the attention and most of the money, while the people who already walk through the door go uncounted. Local giving searches are small; store, pickup and volunteer searches are large and cheap. A charity with 501(c)(3) status can usually run its mission searches on Google Ad Grants, so we put the grant on stores, pickups and volunteering, a paid budget on giving searches, and charity ads on Facebook and Instagram, search ads, the website and email on one goal: turning the people a charity already reaches into donors.

What charities need their marketing to do.

These are the jobs we see charities ask of their marketing, from a single-program charity to one that funds its work with stores and donated goods. They are why a charity plan looks different from a church’s.

  • Monthly givers, not only one-time gifts

A monthly giver is worth many single gifts over a year. The donation page, the thank-you and the second ask decide whether a first gift becomes a habit.

  • Stores and drop-off points that are easy to find

For a charity that sells donated goods, the map listing, opening hours and drop-off times bring in shoppers and donations every day of the year.

  • Volunteers who turn into supporters

People who give their time are the most likely to give money later. The plan keeps them on a list and invites them back, not only to the next shift.

  • Year-end giving that starts in the fall

Giving Tuesday and December appeals land best with people who already know the charity from the months before, not with strangers in the last week.

  • Proof of where the money goes

Donors check the 501(c)(3) status, the programs and real stories before they give. A donation page without them loses gifts at the last step.

  • Pickups and donations of goods

Furniture and clothing donations keep the stores stocked and the programs running. A pickup request that is easy to book on a phone is a donation too.

The largest charity search in Charlotte is a store
"charity stores near me" drew 49,500 Charlotte-area searches a month, 60,500 in July and August 2026 and 40,500 in December 2025 and February 2026. Shoppers peak in summer, when giving searches are at their lowest, so the stores are where a charity can meet new supporters in the quiet months.
Local giving searches are small, and national names take December
"charities to donate to", "donate to charity", "local charities near me", "charity near me" and "charlotte nonprofits" add up to about 710 Charlotte-area searches a month. "donate to charity" fell from 70 in October 2025 to 10 in July and August 2026, while searches naming large national charities jumped in November and December. A local charity raises year-end gifts from its own list, not from search alone.
Volunteers search in the fall and January, and clicks are cheap
"volunteer charlotte" reached 2,900 searches in October and November 2025 and January 2026, against 1,900 in the summer months, at about $0.55 a click. Teen volunteer searches peaked at 110 in May and June 2026, when students need service hours.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.

A charity that funds itself with stores, one that runs on events and one that depends on a few large donors need different plans. Four things set the starting point.

  • Your giving goals More monthly givers, a bigger year-end, more goods donations, a full volunteer calendar or a sold-out benefit. Each starts with a different page and campaign.
  • Your calendar Grant search and the map bring pickups and volunteers within weeks. Email, video and SEO build over months, ahead of Giving Tuesday and the year-end.
  • The grant and your budget Whether the charity qualifies for Ad Grants sets what search costs. Giving searches, paid social and video come from the fundraising budget, set by what a donor gives over several years.
  • Your cause and your area National charities in the same cause, the neighborhoods your stores and programs serve, and how far people will drive with a carload of donations shape what to bid on.

Data sets the mix between the grant, paid search, social and email, ties every gift, pickup and sign-up back to its source, and shows which channels bring donors who give again.

  • Charity with stores

    Donated goods fund the programs

The grant on store, pickup and volunteer searches, a listing for every store, and an email path that turns shoppers and goods donors into givers.

  • Program charity

Gifts and grants fund one mission

Paid search for giving searches, Facebook and video stories through the fall, a donation page with monthly giving first and a year-end series.

  • Event-led charity

    A benefit carries the year

Ticket and sponsor pages, social and email around the event, and a follow-up that keeps guests giving after the night is over.

If a Charlotte charity came to us, here is how we would start.

This is the plan we would pitch to a real client, built for a fictional Charlotte charity that furnishes homes for families leaving shelters and funds the work with two charity stores, using real Charlotte search data. The charity, its phone number and its website are invented. Sample data shows the kind of results a campaign like this tracks; it is not a client result and not a promise.

How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent

Store, pickup and volunteer searches are mission searches with cheap clicks, so they run on the Google Ad Grants account, shown only in the area the charity serves. Giving searches cost more and are few, so they run in a separate paid account with a small budget of their own.

Charity stores (Ad Grants)

The largest searches, shown within a short drive of each store. The ad names the stores and what a purchase pays for, so shoppers looking for another chain do not click.

How our negative keyword governance protects the budget

  • Names of other charity store chains
  • Car, boat and vehicle donation
  • Blood and plasma donation
  • Jobs, nonprofit careers and salaries
  • Mattress and appliance disposal
  • Court-ordered community service

Our specialists exclude searches for other store chains, vehicle and plasma donors, job seekers and disposal searches before launch, and review search terms every week. On a grant account every wasted click also lowers the click-through rate the grant depends on.

The Google listings for the stores and the drop-off door

Charities are not a Local Services Ads category, so the map does the work for the largest searches. Each store has its own Google listing with shopping hours, drop-off hours, what the store accepts, photos of the floor and the donation door, and a link to book a pickup. The grant ads point to the same stores; Google asks charities that serve their own community to show ads only in their local area, under its Ad Grants account policy.

Charity marketing from Charlotte, for causes across the region.

We are based in Charlotte, where hundreds of charities compete for the same donors, volunteers and year-end gifts, and where a growing region keeps bringing new neighbors who want to help. That is why we plan around the drive to a store or a drop-off door and the neighborhoods each charity serves, from Gastonia and Monroe to Mooresville and Rock Hill. We also work with charities nationwide, including causes that raise money far beyond their home city; giving seasons and grant rules are the same everywhere, while the cause and the competition change.

Six donor leaks we fix in charity marketing.

When we review charity accounts, websites and donor lists, these are the places we most often find future donors slipping away, and what we change first.

  1. Shoppers and goods donors who never hear from the charity

The people who shop or drop off every week are the warmest audience a charity has. We collect emails at the register and the pickup booking and invite them to give.

  2. A year-end appeal sent to strangers

Local giving searches are small and national charities dominate December. We build the list and the story from September, so the appeal reaches people who know the name.

  3. Grant ads on giving searches that cannot win

Costly donation searches drain a grant account and pull its click-through rate down. We keep the grant on store, pickup and volunteer searches and give giving searches a small paid budget.

  4. Every gift counted the same

When a $20 gift and a $1,000 gift count as one conversion, bidding cannot tell them apart. We send the real amount of each gift back to Google and Meta.

  5. Volunteers treated as a separate list

Volunteers give money at a higher rate than strangers. We keep them on the main list and send a giving invitation after their third shift, not the first.

  6. Bidding on vehicle donation searches

Car donation clicks start at $10.77 in Charlotte and reach $44.84. Unless the charity runs its own vehicle program, we exclude them.

Questions charities ask us.

Can our charity use Google Ad Grants for donations?

Yes, but it is rarely the best use of the grant. Donation searches are few and costly, and the grant works best on mission searches like stores, pickups and volunteering. We run giving searches in a separate paid account and report both together.

Where do new donors come from if giving searches are so small?

Mostly from people the charity already meets: shoppers, goods donors, volunteers and event guests. We collect their emails, tell them what their help did, and ask for a gift, with Facebook, Instagram and YouTube stories reaching new people near the charity.

When should our year-end campaign start?

In September. Stories and list building run through the fall, the Giving Tuesday ask goes out in late November or early December, and the year-end series runs to December 31, so the appeal reaches people who already know the charity.

What should a charity spend on marketing?

It depends on what a donor gives over several years, whether the grant covers the search work, and the goals for gifts, givers and volunteers. We set a target cost per gift and per monthly giver from those numbers, then move budget to what brings them.

Do you work with charities outside Charlotte?

Yes. We are based in Charlotte and work with charities nationwide. The method is the same everywhere; the cause, the competing national names and the neighborhoods each charity serves change.

How do you know which channel brought a donor?

Every gift, pickup and sign-up is tracked to its keyword group, ad or email. When a shopper or volunteer later gives online, we match the gift to the channel that first brought them, so the report shows donors by source, not only clicks.
