Google Shopping ads that sell your products at a profit.

When someone searches for a product you sell, Google Shopping ads show your photo, price and store before they click. Overtop Media Digital Marketing builds the product feed those ads come from, splits the catalog by what each product earns, and judges every campaign on profit, for online stores and retailers in Charlotte and across the country.

  • 49,500US searches a month for "bike helmet" alone (October 2026)
  • 37,500more a month name the type they want: mountain, MIPS, road or with lights

The short answer

What are Google Shopping ads, and what does Google Shopping management involve?

Building a product feed Google trusts, splitting the catalog by margin, keeping out the searches that never buy, and judging every dollar on profit rather than clicks.

Google Shopping ads, also called product listing ads, are the product tiles with a photo, price and store name that appear on Google Search, the Shopping tab, Google Images and, through Performance Max, YouTube, Gmail and Maps. Unlike text ads they are not built from keywords: Google reads your product data in Merchant Center and decides which searches each product matches. That makes the feed the real campaign, and the reason most Google Shopping campaigns are won or lost before a bid is ever set.

We run Shopping as one part of your Google Ads management and, for online stores, as one channel of a full ecommerce marketing plan. Overtop Media Digital Marketing has been a Google Partner managing Google Shopping campaigns from Charlotte since 2009.

  • The feed comes firstTitles, product types, GTINs and images are fixed in Merchant Center before we scale spend, because that is what Google matches.
  • Bidding by margin, not revenueProducts are grouped by what they earn, so the budget favors the sales that leave money in the business.
  • Judged on profitOrders, returns and cost of goods are tracked back to the product and the campaign that produced them.

What well-run Google Shopping ads get you.

Shopping puts the product itself in front of a buyer who is already searching for it. Done well, it becomes the most predictable source of new orders a store has.

Buyers who arrive ready to purchase
They have seen the photo, the price and your store before they click, so the visits you pay for are from people who already like the offer.
A return you can plan inventory around
Because sales are tracked by product and margin, you know which lines to stock deeper and which to stop advertising.
Your whole catalog working, not just the hero products
Every product with a clean listing can match its own searches, including the long tail of sizes, colors and models a text ad would never cover.
Shoppers sent to your stores as well as your site
For retailers with locations, local inventory shows what is in stock nearby and brings people through the door.

How we match Google Shopping ads to your catalog and margins.

Before we launch, Overtop Media Digital Marketing checks your product data, margins and search demand to confirm whether Shopping should lead your growth or work alongside another channel.

Where OVERTOP scales fastest

  • You sell physical products with a priceOnline stores, retailers, distributors and brands selling direct: if a buyer can search for the product, Shopping can show it.
  • Your margins leave room to buy customersWhen an order earns enough after cost of goods and shipping, our margin-based bidding grows sales without eroding profit.
  • You want new customers, not just repeat onesShopping reaches people comparing products who have never heard of your store, at the moment they are deciding.
  • You have stores as well as a websiteLocal inventory ads show nearby shoppers what is on your shelves today, so the same campaign drives store visits.

Where OVERTOP sequences other channels

  • You sell mainly on AmazonWhen most of your sales happen on Amazon, our team leads with Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands, and plans Google around it. See Amazon ads.
  • Your store loses visitors at checkoutWhen the product pages or checkout do not convert, we fix the store first so ad spend is not poured into a leaking funnel. See ecommerce marketing.
  • You sell a service, not productsShopping needs a product feed. For services, our specialists lead with Search ads built around the searches that turn into calls. See Search ads.
  • Your products break Google’s Shopping rulesSome categories are restricted or banned in Shopping. We check your catalog against the policies before planning spend, and route those products to channels that allow them.

How we run Google Shopping campaigns.

Six parts, each as important as the bid. Leave one out and the money leaks somewhere else.

Merchant Center and a product feed Google trusts

Google matches Shopping ads to searches from your product data, so we start in Merchant Center: titles that lead with what the product is and the detail buyers search by, accurate product types and categories, GTINs, sale prices, shipping and return policies, and clean images. Disapproved and limited products are fixed before launch, and the feed is checked every week after it.

In the US, 37,500 searches a month name the type of bike helmet they want. A title that only says "Helmet" misses most of them.

Standard Shopping and Performance Max, each with a job

Standard Shopping campaigns show your products on Google Search, the Shopping tab and Google Images, with full control over which products get budget and which searches are excluded. Performance Max, which replaced Smart Shopping in 2022, takes the same feed across Search, YouTube, Gmail, Display, Discover and Maps. We choose by catalog and goal, and when both run we set them up so they never compete for the same product.

Search terms and product exclusions

Shopping has no keywords to choose, but it does have search terms to control. We read what people searched before they clicked, exclude the searches that never buy (laws, fitting advice, brands you do not stock, used and free), and move budget toward the product searches that turn into orders.

About 2,080 US searches a month around bike helmets come from people looking for laws or fitting advice, not a helmet to buy.

AI Max for Shopping and Google’s newest features, tested properly

AI Max for Shopping, in beta since April 2026, can rewrite product titles for each search and send buyers to the most relevant page on your site. Google publishes an average lift for advertisers who turn it on; we test it against your current results with brand and URL exclusions in place, and keep it only where it adds profitable orders. Product videos, loyalty pricing and Merchant Center’s priority fixes are handled the same way.

Margin-based bidding and tracking that counts profit

Smart bidding chases whatever value it is given. We send it order value with cost of goods taken out where your systems allow it, account for returns, and set return targets by product group instead of one target for the whole store, so the bids favor the sales that actually make money. Read how we use offline conversion data to make that happen.

Local inventory ads and free listings

For retailers with stores, local inventory ads show shoppers nearby that a product is in stock and can be picked up today, and they are measured on store visits as well as online sales. The same Merchant Center feed also makes your products eligible for Google’s free listings, which we keep accurate so they add orders at no media cost.

Where we recover margin in inherited Shopping accounts.

When a store comes to Overtop Media Digital Marketing after a stalled Shopping run, our specialists typically recover wasted spend and grow profitable orders across these six areas.

  1. Turning the feed into the campaign

Inherited feeds often carry the store’s internal product names, missing GTINs and vague categories. We rewrite titles and attributes around what buyers search, so products match more of the searches that sell.

  2. Splitting one bid across the whole catalog

One campaign with one target lets low-margin products take the budget. We group products by margin, price and sales history so the best earners get the most spend.

  3. Separating brand searches from new customers

When searches for your own store name count as Shopping wins, the account looks better than it is. We separate brand demand so every non-brand dollar is measured on new customers.

  4. Valuing orders by profit, not revenue

A target based on revenue treats a $100 sale at 10% margin like one at 60%. We feed margin and returns into the conversion value so bidding chases profit.

  5. Stopping Performance Max from cannibalizing Shopping

Overlapping Performance Max and Standard Shopping on the same products hides what each one does. We set clear jobs for each and read the channel reports to confirm it.

  6. Fixing disapprovals before they cost sales

Products drop out quietly for price mismatches, missing shipping or policy issues. We monitor Merchant Center diagnostics weekly so best sellers never vanish from Google.

How Shopping works with your other campaigns.

Shopping catches people comparing products. It works best with campaigns that create that demand and bring undecided shoppers back.

  1. They discover you Video and social ads show the product to people who are not searching yet.
  2. Shopping ads work here They compare products Shopping ads show your photo, price and reviews next to the alternatives.
  3. They come back Dynamic remarketing and email bring back people who viewed a product or left a cart.
  4. They buy A fast product page and a simple checkout turn the visit into an order.
  • Google Ads, all campaign types

Search, Performance Max, YouTube and Demand Gen share the same account, budget and conversion data as your Shopping campaigns.

  • Ecommerce marketing

For online stores: Shopping as one channel of a plan that includes social ads, email, SEO and the store itself.

  • Amazon Ads

Planned with Shopping so your store and your Amazon listings never bid against each other for the same buyer.

  • Google Search ads

Text ads for brand and category searches that Shopping alone does not cover.

  • Microsoft Ads

The same product feed on Microsoft Shopping, set up from your Google campaigns.

  • Facebook and Instagram ads

Catalog ads that show each shopper the products they looked at, from the same feed.

Our approach: your plan depends on you, and the data decides.

Every store is different. Shopping alone is right for some; for others it is one of several campaign types and channels working together.

  • Your goals Online orders, store visits, new customers or clearing stock, and what each is worth to you.
  • Your timeline Sales needed for this season, or a steady build over the next year.
  • Your margins What each product line earns after cost of goods, shipping and returns.
  • Your competition Who else shows next to your products, at what price, and where they leave openings.

Those four decide whether Shopping should lead, share the budget with Performance Max or wait for the feed. After launch, the data picks the direction, confirms each decision and tells us when to change course.

  2. Audit the feed

  3. Build it properly

  4. Launch and learn

  5. Grow what works

Budget moves to the products and searches that produce profit, and new campaign types are added when the data says so.

Proof, in Google’s numbers and ours.

Google publishes what its newest Shopping features deliver on average. Our market data shows how buyers search for products. Together they explain why the feed decides the results.

  • 5% more conversions or conversion value, at a similar cost, for retail advertisers who turn on AI Max for Shopping. Google, 2026 (beta)
  • 49,500 US searches a month for "bike helmet", the generic search every competitor bids on. OVERTOP Search Intelligence, October 2026
  • 37,500 more US searches a month that name the type of helmet, matched only by feeds that say it. OVERTOP Search Intelligence, October 2026
US searches a month around one product
  • bike helmet49,500
  • mountain bike helmet14,800
  • mips bike helmet9,900
  • road bike helmet9,900
  • bike helmet with lights2,900
  • bike helmet near me2,400
  • bike helmet laws1,900

The generic search is the biggest and the most contested. The searches that name a type, a feature or a nearby store are smaller one by one, but together they rival it, and they come from people who already know what they want. Shopping can only show your product for them if the feed says what the product is.

Google’s averages are real, but they are averages. AI Max and smart bidding find more profitable orders only when the feed is complete, the conversion values reflect margin and the wrong searches are kept out, which is the work this page describes, and why we audit every catalog before launch instead of guessing.

Questions about Google Shopping ads.

How much do Google Shopping ads cost?

You set the budget and pay only when someone clicks. Click costs depend on the product, the price and the competition: in the US a top-of-page click on "bike helmet" is estimated at around $0.30 to $1.60 (October 2026), while expensive or competitive products cost far more. We size the budget from your margins and the product searches in your market before you spend. Every client gets a custom plan, so we do not publish price lists.

What do I need to run Google Shopping ads?

A Google Merchant Center account with a product feed, linked to Google Ads, plus a website where people can buy, clear shipping and return policies, and conversion tracking. We set up or repair all of it, including the feed, before the first campaign goes live.

What is the difference between Google Shopping ads and product listing ads?

They are the same thing. Product listing ads was the original name for the product tiles Google shows with a photo, price and store name. Today Google calls them Shopping ads, and they run in Standard Shopping campaigns or inside Performance Max.

Should I use Standard Shopping or Performance Max?

It depends on the catalog, the margins and how much control you need. Standard Shopping gives the most control over products, budgets and search terms on Google Search and the Shopping tab. Performance Max reaches further, across YouTube, Gmail, Display, Discover and Maps, with more automation. Many stores use both with clear jobs for each; we decide from your data and set them up so they do not compete for the same products.

What is AI Max for Shopping, and should I use it?

AI Max for Shopping is a Google beta, launched in April 2026, that can customize product titles for each search and send buyers to the most relevant page. Google reports that retail advertisers who turn it on typically see 5% more conversions or conversion value at a similar cost (Google internal data, 2026). We test it against your current results with brand and URL exclusions in place, and keep it only where it adds profitable orders.

Why are my products disapproved in Merchant Center?

The most common causes are a price or availability that does not match the website, missing GTINs or shipping information, image problems, and policy issues for certain product categories. Our team reads the diagnostics, fixes the cause in the feed or on the site, and monitors the account weekly so best sellers do not drop out of Google.

Do Shopping ads work for stores with physical locations?

Yes. Local inventory ads show nearby shoppers that a product is in stock and can be picked up today, and they can be measured on store visits as well as online sales. Your products can also appear in Google’s free listings from the same Merchant Center feed.

Do you manage Amazon ads as well as Google Shopping?

Yes. Many stores sell on both, and we plan them together so they do not compete for the same buyer. See our Amazon advertising service for Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands and the rest of Amazon’s ad formats.

Do you manage Google Shopping campaigns outside Charlotte?

Yes. Our office is in Charlotte and we know the region well, but we manage Google Shopping campaigns for online stores and retailers across the Carolinas and the United States. Local or national, you work with the same team and see every order and every dollar in one report.
