Direct-to-consumer brands
DTC marketing that pays back on the first order and grows on the second
A brand that sells direct owns its customer, its margin and its data, and pays for every buyer it wins. We plan search, Shopping, Meta, TikTok and email around each product line’s own season, and we judge every channel by cost per new customer and the orders that come after.
- 49,500US searches for "cooling sheets" in June and July 2026, against 18,100 in January
- 246,000US searches for "luxury bedding" in November 2025, against 6,600 in September 2026
- 2,400searches a month for "direct to consumer", against 165,000 for "duvet cover": buyers search the product
- $1.01low end of the US click cost for "best sheets", about twice the $0.52 for "duvet cover"
The short answer
What should DTC marketing deliver for a direct-to-consumer brand?
DTC marketing should win new customers at a cost the first order can carry, fill each product line’s season before it peaks, and turn first buyers into repeat buyers through email and text the brand owns.
A direct-to-consumer brand lives or dies on two numbers: what a new customer costs, and what that customer orders over the next year. In the DTC accounts we audit, the budget usually leaks in three places: a flat monthly spend while product lines peak in opposite seasons, Meta creative left running weeks after it stopped selling, and branded searches paid for twice by ads and email at once. We plan search ads, Shopping ads, Meta ads, TikTok ads and email and text as one system, measured in cost per new customer and repeat orders.
Scaling DTC in marketing requires a direct to consumer marketing strategy that separates first-order acquisition from repeat customer retention, pairing a technical DTC SEO agency foundation with margin-checked Shopping and paid social.
What direct-to-consumer brands need their marketing to solve.
These are the pressures we see in brands that sell their own product online. They are why a DTC plan is built differently from a plan for a store with a door or a shop that sells other brands.
-
A first order that pays back
Every new buyer is bought with ads. The cost of that first order has to fit the margin, or growth gets more expensive as it gets bigger.
-
The second order
Profit usually arrives with the reorder, the add-on and the gift. Email, text and post-purchase offers carry it without another paid click.
-
Creative that keeps selling
Social ads tire as the same audience sees them. A steady supply of new angles, formats and real customer videos keeps the cost per buyer from creeping up.
-
Product lines with their own seasons
One line can peak in summer while another peaks in winter, and gifting doubles everything in November. Budgets, stock and creative have to follow each line.
-
Shoppers comparing before they buy
Buyers search "best" and read reviews before they try a new brand. Comparison pages, reviews and clear proof decide who gets the order.
-
Site, Amazon and retail in one picture
Many brands also sell on Amazon or in stores. Each sale has to be counted once, so ads are not paid for twice for the same buyer.
What shoppers of a DTC bedding brand search, and when.
A direct-to-consumer brand sells across the country, so these are US monthly searches and estimated click costs for one example category: bedding. The yearly averages hide the seasons, so the notes below read the monthly curve.
| Search | Charlotte area / mo | Est. click cost, US |
|---|---|---|
| duvet cover | 1,600 | $0.52 to $3.58 |
| bed sheets | 1,000 | $0.70 to $5.29 |
| luxury bedding | 880 | $1.10 to $7.46 |
| linen sheets | 590 | $0.79 to $6.09 |
| bamboo sheets | 590 | $1.33 to $6.32 |
| cooling sheets | 390 | $1.39 to $5.00 |
| best sheets | 390 | $1.01 to $8.88 |
| flannel sheets | 260 | $0.36 to $2.49 |
| organic cotton sheets | 210 | $1.23 to $5.36 |
| direct to consumer | 30 | $2.15 to $14.99 |
- One catalog, opposite seasons
- "cooling sheets" grew from 18,100 US searches in January 2026 to 49,500 in June and July, and "cooling comforter" went from 8,100 in February to 22,200 from May to July. "flannel sheets" ran the other way: 90,500 in November 2025, down to 5,400 in June 2026. A single budget for the whole catalog funds the wrong line half the year.
- November buys gifts, not just sheets
- "luxury bedding" jumped from 90,500 searches in October 2025 to 246,000 in November and 165,000 in December, then fell to 27,100 in January. Searches for the leading online bedding brands by name rose too, to 201,000 in November, so the gift season raises brand demand and competitor demand at the same time.
- Comparison costs more than category
- "best sheets" cost $1.01 at the low end and $8.88 at the high end, against $0.52 to $3.58 for "duvet cover". Searchers comparing brands are close to a first purchase, and every brand bids for them. Meanwhile "direct to consumer" itself drew only 2,400 searches a month: shoppers never search for the business model.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.
A new brand looking for its first thousand customers and an established brand adding a second product line need different plans. Four things decide where a DTC plan starts.
- Your goals More new customers, a better first-order cost, a bigger gift season or more reorders from buyers you already have. Each one starts with a different channel and a different offer.
- Your timeline Search, Shopping and Meta can sell this month. Comparison pages, SEO and a large email list build value over several seasons.
- Your margins and repeat rate A product bought once and a product reordered every few months can afford very different first-order costs. Margin and repeat rate set how hard each channel can bid.
- Your competition Well-funded brands own the broad category terms and the biggest social budgets. We pick the needs, fabrics and comparisons where your product has a real reason to win.
Data sets the budget curve for each product line, ties every first order and reorder to the ad or email that started it, and shows which channels bring customers who come back.

If a Charlotte DTC brand came to us, here is how we would start.
This is the pitch we would give a real client, built for a fictional Charlotte-based bedding brand that sells online nationwide, with real US search data. The brand, its phone number and its website are invented. Sample data shows the kind of results a campaign like this tracks; it is not a client result and not a promise.

How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent
We would split the account by why the shopper is searching. Each group gets its own budget, its own landing page and its own conversion value, so spend can follow each product line’s season and the groups that bring repeat buyers.
Hot sleepers and cooling
The summer line. It turns up in March, peaks in June and July, and comes back down after August, with a page that answers the need before the fabric.
| Search | US / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| bamboo sheets | 49,500 | $1.33 to $6.32 |
| cooling sheets | 33,100 | $1.39 to $5.00 |
| cooling comforter | 14,800 | $1.33 to $5.00 |
| best sheets for hot sleepers | 9,900 | $1.17 to $6.93 |
| best cooling sheets | 9,900 | $1.18 to $6.45 |
Fabric shoppers
Shoppers who already know what they want to sleep on. Each fabric gets its own page and its own feed label, so the best sellers with room in the margin get the budget.
| Search | US / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| linen sheets | 60,500 | $0.79 to $6.09 |
| egyptian cotton sheets | 40,500 | $0.63 to $3.35 |
| percale sheets | 33,100 | $0.65 to $5.40 |
| organic cotton sheets | 18,100 | $1.23 to $5.36 |
| tencel sheets | 8,100 | $0.91 to $4.54 |
Comparing the best
The most expensive clicks and the closest to a first order. Sent to a comparison page with reviews, trial terms and fabric guides, and judged by new customers, not clicks.
| Search | US / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| luxury bedding | 60,500 | $1.10 to $7.46 |
| best sheets | 33,100 | $1.01 to $8.88 |
| best duvet covers | 8,100 | $0.97 to $8.24 |
Category basics
Large and cheaper per click, but full of bargain hunters. Kept to Shopping with the products that win on price and photos, and capped until order data shows they pay.
| Search | US / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| duvet cover | 165,000 | $0.52 to $3.58 |
| duvet insert | 33,100 | $0.60 to $4.83 |
| linen duvet cover | 14,800 | $0.96 to $5.57 |
| sheet sets | 9,900 | $0.80 to $5.45 |
How our negative keyword governance protects the budget
- Big-box store and rival brand names
- Crib, toddler and dorm bedding the brand does not make
- Hotel and wholesale bulk linen
- Sewing, fabric by the yard and DIY
- Jobs, careers and investor searches
- Cheap, dollar and clearance searches
Shoppers looking for a named store, for sizes the brand does not make, for bulk linen or for a bargain use the same words but rarely buy a premium set. Our specialists exclude them before launch and review search terms every week, so the budget reaches buyers ready for a first order.

Each intent group gets message-matched ad copy engineered by our specialists to qualify buyers before the click and lift expected click-through rate.

The Instagram ad
A new bedding brand is discovered on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok before anyone searches its name. We test several creative angles at once, such as the hot sleeper, the fabric close-up and a real customer video, keep the ones that bring first orders at the target cost, and replace each one as it tires.
The email
The second order is where a DTC brand earns its margin. Post-purchase emails and texts follow what each buyer chose, suggest the matching piece at the right moment and bring them back without paying for another click.
Finish the bed you started
You chose our linen sheets six weeks ago. Many sleepers who love them add the matching duvet cover and pillowcases next, in the same colors. As a returning customer, your next set ships free, and you can see every color in your size in one place.
Complete my setThe landing page the ads send people to
Each keyword group has its own page: cooling searches see the need first, fabric searches see that fabric, comparison searches see the side-by-side guide and reviews. Each page asks for one thing: the first order.

Google AdsYour buyers, kept out of new-customer bids

- Email and text bring the second Matching pieces and reorders.
How our team tracks calls, bookings and revenue
- New customers apart from returning onesEvery order marked as a first order or a repeat order in Google Ads, Meta, TikTok and analytics, so new-customer campaigns are judged on new buyers only.
- Margin, not just revenueOrder values sent back to the ad platforms after discounts, shipping and returns, so bidding learns which products and channels earn money.
- Creative by creativeCost per first order for every ad and every angle, so tired creative is replaced on data, not on a calendar.
- A monthly cohort reportSpend, new customers, cost per new customer and the reorders each month’s buyers place over the following months, by channel.

DTC advertising and marketing services, and which come first.

What has worked for direct-to-consumer brands.
Results the ad platforms published for a direct-to-consumer sleep brand, a home goods brand and two national retailers. They are those companies’ published results, not ours; each story shows what we would take from it.
DTC marketing from Charlotte, for brands that ship nationwide.
We are based in Charlotte, a city with a growing number of brands that design here and ship to every state, from home goods and apparel to food and personal care. A direct-to-consumer brand rarely sells mostly to its own city, so our plans target buyers across the US and read results by region, while brands with a showroom or local retail partners in Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius, Matthews or Fort Mill also get the map and local campaigns. We work with DTC brands nationwide; the method is the same, and the seasons, the competition and the margins change with the product.
Six growth leaks we fix in DTC ad accounts.
When we take over direct-to-consumer accounts, these are the places we most often find margin and customers leaking, and what we change first.
One budget for every product line
In bedding, cooling sheet searches nearly triple from January to July while flannel searches fall by over nine tenths. We give each line its own budget curve, so the money follows the line that is in season.
Counting returning buyers as new
When new-customer campaigns get credit for people who already bought, the cost per new customer looks better than it is. We separate first orders from repeat orders and feed existing buyers out of new-customer bids.
Creative left running until it fails
Social ads lose their edge as the same people see them again. We test new angles every month and retire each ad on its cost per first order, before the account average slips.
Judging ads on revenue alone
A discounted bundle and a full-price set can show the same revenue and very different profit. We send margin after discounts, shipping and returns back to the platforms, so bidding learns which orders earn money.
No page for shoppers comparing
"best sheets" clicks cost about twice the price of category clicks, and those shoppers want proof. We build a comparison page with reviews and trial terms, so the expensive click lands on an answer.
Stopping at the first order
Most DTC profit arrives on the second and third order. We set up post-purchase email and text from launch, matched to what each buyer chose, so the reorder does not need another paid click.
Questions DTC founders ask us.
What should a DTC brand spend on ads?
In DTC marketing, the right budget depends on your margin, how often customers reorder and how crowded your category is. We start from the searches for your product and their click costs, set a target cost per new customer the first order can carry, and raise spend as order data shows each channel returns it.
Is Meta or Google better for a DTC brand?
Both, for different jobs. Meta and TikTok create demand for a product people have not heard of; Google search and Shopping catch shoppers who already know what they want. We measure both by the first orders and reorders they start and move budget to whichever earns it.
How is DTC marketing different from ecommerce marketing?
A DTC brand sells its own product, so it controls the margin, the story and the customer relationship, and it carries the full cost of winning each buyer. Our ecommerce work covers any online store; for a DTC brand we put more weight on creative testing, first-order cost and repeat purchase.
Should we bid on our own brand name?
Usually yes, when rival brands bid on it, because those clicks are cheap and protect orders you already earned. We test it against no ads in your account, keep existing buyers out of new-customer reporting and stop it if the data shows the orders arrive anyway.
Do you work with DTC brands outside Charlotte?
Yes. As a direct to consumer marketing agency based in Charlotte, we work with brands that ship nationwide. The method is the same everywhere; the product, its seasons and the competition change the plan.
How do you measure repeat purchase?
We group customers by the month of their first order and track what each group buys over the following months, by the channel that brought them. That shows which channels bring buyers who come back, not just the cheapest first order.
