Family and divorce law

Family law marketing that meets people early, quietly and in the right month

Divorce, custody, child support, separation and prenups are searched by people who often have not told anyone yet. We plan search, Local Services Ads, the Google listing, video and follow-up so the firm is found when they are ready, nothing reaches a shared device by accident, and every dollar is judged by retained clients.

  • 8,100Charlotte-area searches for "divorce lawyer" in May 2026, against 1,600 in February
  • $6.33low end of a "divorce lawyer" click in the Charlotte area, a fraction of an injury click
  • 1,300Charlotte-area searches a month for "prenup attorney", with no click estimate from advertisers
  • 1 yearof living apart before a North Carolina absolute divorce, so separation searches come first

The short answer

What should family law marketing do for a firm?

Family law marketing should bring a firm consultations with the clients it is built to help, in divorce, custody, support and agreements, at a cost per retained client its fees can carry, with discretion built into every ad, page and email.

Family law clicks are cheap next to injury clicks: the low end of a Charlotte "divorce lawyer" click sits near $6. The waste hides elsewhere. In family firm accounts we audit, we see one budget for every matter type, price shoppers and pro bono searches eating the clicks, retargeting and email that could surface on a spouse’s phone, and no record of which consultations retained. We plan divorce lawyer ads, Local Services Ads, family law SEO and consultation follow-up as one intake system, and read it as cost per retained client by matter type.

What family law firms need their marketing to solve.

These are the pressures we see in family law accounts. They are why a family law plan looks nothing like an injury plan, even inside the same legal market.

  • Discretion on every channel

A prospective client may share a laptop, a phone plan or an inbox with the spouse. Ad copy, retargeting, email subjects and text reminders have to stay quiet enough that nothing gives the search away.

  • Spend ready for the spring and fall

Charlotte divorce searches ran near 1,600 to 1,900 a month through the winter, then jumped in May and again in September 2026. Budgets that stay flat miss the months people finally act.

  • Fewer price-shopper consultations

Searches for cheap, free and pro bono family lawyers are cheap to buy and rarely retain. Keeping them out protects the calendar for people the firm can actually help.

  • A plan per matter type

A contested custody case, an uncontested divorce, a child support change and a prenup are worth different amounts and are searched differently. Each needs its own ads, page and target cost.

  • Consultations that become clients

Many family law prospects book a consultation with more than one firm. Follow-up that answers their next question is often what decides who they retain.

  • Retainers tracked back to the ad

A client may retain weeks after the consultation. Sending that retainer back from the practice software is how bidding learns which searches turn into clients.

Not January: May and September
"divorce lawyer" drew 1,900 Charlotte-area searches in January 2026, no more than October 2025, and 1,600 in February. It then reached 8,100 in May 2026 and 4,400 in September 2026. "family lawyer" followed the same curve, from 590 in February to 8,100 in May and 5,400 in September.
Prenups and separation are searched, not bid on
"prenup attorney" averaged 1,300 Charlotte-area searches a month and peaked at 2,400 in March 2026, ahead of wedding season, yet the data shows no click estimate for it. "lawyer for separation agreement" ran 390 to 480 a month in the spring. Few advertisers are present on either.
Custody and support searches cooled in late summer
"child support attorneys" ran 590 to 880 a month from October 2025 to May 2026, then fell to 50 in September 2026. "custody attorneys" fell from 590 to 90 over the same months. Budgets for these matters follow their own curve, not the divorce curve.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.

A solo family lawyer, a firm with several associates and a firm known for complex property cases need different plans. Four things decide where a family law plan starts.

  • Your matter types More contested custody cases, more high-asset divorces, steadier uncontested work, or prenups and agreements. Each starts with different searches, pages and consultation questions.
  • Your timeline Search and Local Services Ads can fill consultations within weeks. Matter pages, reviews and attorney video take months, then make every later consultation cheaper.
  • Your fees and budget A flat-fee uncontested divorce and a contested equitable distribution case can carry very different costs per client. The fee structure sets the bid for each.
  • Your competition Some Charlotte family firms bid on every divorce search all year. We find the matter types, months and searches, such as prenups, where a focused firm stands out.

Data sets a budget curve for the May and September divorce peaks, separates custody and support budgets from divorce budgets, and shows which matter types retain at the best cost.

If a Charlotte family law firm came to us, here is how we would start.

This is the pitch we would give a real client, built for a fictional Charlotte family law firm with real Charlotte search data. The firm, its phone number and its website are invented. Sample data shows the kind of results a campaign like this tracks; it is not a client result and not a promise.

How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent

We would split the account by matter, so each one has its own budget, landing page and cost per retained client. Divorce budgets rise into May and September; custody and support budgets follow their own months.

Divorce

The largest share of searches and the core of the caseload. Exact and phrase match, with call ads during the hours the firm answers.

How our negative keyword governance protects the budget

  • Free, cheap, pro bono and legal aid searches
  • Do-it-yourself divorce forms and online filing kits
  • Court records, divorce record lookups and case search
  • Law school, paralegal and family court jobs
  • Matters the firm does not take, such as criminal and immigration
  • Counties and states outside the firm’s practice

Cheap and pro bono searches cost as little as $1.25 a click in the data, which is why they quietly eat budget. Our specialists exclude them, record lookups, forms and job searches before launch, and review search terms every week.

How we write and test the Google search ads

Each intent group gets message-matched ad copy engineered by our specialists to qualify buyers before the click and lift expected click-through rate.

Local Services Ads and the map

Family law is one of the legal practice areas that can run Local Services Ads, which appear above the search ads and charge per lead rather than per click. Tillbrook Family Law would complete Google’s checks for its attorneys, and once approved its listing shows a Google Verified badge. We would set the matters and hours it takes, answer every lead quickly and dispute leads outside its practice. The same reviews build its Google Business Profile, which carries the “near me” map results.

The Facebook ad

People often read about separation for months before they call. These ads reach adults in the firm’s counties with copy that speaks to the topic, never to the person’s situation, and retargeting stays off so the ads never follow someone onto a shared screen.

The email

A plain subject line keeps the email private on a shared inbox, and the note on contact preferences tells the client the firm thought about it. Prompt, useful follow-up cuts missed consultations and costs nothing per click.

The landing page the ads send people to

Each matter gets its own page, so a parent asking about custody never lands on a prenup page. The page shows the attorneys, the matter and a short form, uses no claims about results, and lets the visitor choose how they want to be contacted.

Family law marketing from Charlotte, for family firms anywhere.

We are based in Charlotte, where family law firms compete for divorce and custody searches across Mecklenburg, Union, Cabarrus and Gaston counties, and into York County in South Carolina, where the divorce rules differ. We plan Charlotte family law campaigns county by county on the Charlotte market’s own search data and North Carolina’s attorney advertising rules. We also work with family law firms across the US, with each campaign built on its own market’s search data and its own state’s rules.

Six places family law accounts lose clients.

When we take over family law accounts, these are the leaks we find most often, and what we change first.

  1. One budget for divorce, custody and support

Divorce searches take the money because they are the largest, and custody and support never get a fair test. We split them so each has its own budget, page and cost per retained client.

  2. A January budget spike

Many firms raise spend in January for the so-called divorce month. In the Charlotte data, January 2026 was one of the quietest months; May and September were the peaks. We set the budget curve from the data instead.

  3. Retargeting that follows people home

Ads that chase a visitor across every site can appear on a shared laptop or tablet. We keep retargeting off or tightly limited, and write every ad so it never assumes the viewer’s situation.

  4. Paying for price shoppers

Cheap, free and pro bono searches cost little per click and fill the calendar with people who will not retain. We exclude them and send back consultations that retained, so bidding learns the difference.

  5. Claims a bar would question

Words like specialist or expert, promised outcomes and reviews used as proof all need care in attorney advertising, and North Carolina reserves "specialist" for board-certified lawyers. We keep copy factual and every piece passes the firm’s attorneys first.

  6. Prenup and separation searches left empty

Few firms bid on prenup or separation agreement searches, though Charlotte residents search them every month. We give them their own pages and ads, often the cheapest consultations in the account.

Questions family law attorneys ask us.

What should a family law firm spend on search ads?

It depends on the matters you take, your fees and how many consultations you can hold. In the Charlotte area, divorce clicks start near $6, so a modest budget buys real volume. We start with the matters that retain best, set a budget that rises into May and September, and adjust it as retainer data comes in.

How do you keep marketing discreet for people who are not ready to tell anyone?

Ad copy speaks to the topic, not to the person; retargeting is off or tightly limited; email subjects and sender names stay plain; and forms ask how and where the person wants to be contacted. Discretion is part of the plan from the first ad.

Is family law SEO worth it next to ads?

Usually, for the searches the firm wants for years: divorce, custody, separation and prenups in its counties. Ads fill the calendar now; matter pages, reviews and the Google listing make each later consultation cheaper.

Do attorney advertising rules apply to our ads?

Yes. Ads, pages, videos, emails and how reviews are used all fall under attorney advertising rules, including limits on words like specialist. We keep claims factual and build the firm’s review into the calendar, so nothing runs before an attorney approves it.

Do you work with family law firms outside Charlotte?

Yes. As a family law marketing agency based in Charlotte, we work with family firms across the US, with each campaign planned on its own market’s search data and its state’s divorce and advertising rules.

What do you count as a result?

Consultations held, retained clients and the cost of each by matter type and channel. Calls and clicks are tracked, but never treated as the goal.
