Estate planning and probate

Estate planning marketing for clients who wait years, and families who cannot

A couple with a new grandchild, a business owner selling up, a daughter whose father died last month: two very different clients search for an estate lawyer. We plan search, seminars, referral partners, the Google listing and follow-up around both, inside attorney advertising rules, and judge every dollar by signed plans and opened estates.

  • $5.00low end of a Charlotte-area "estate planning attorney" click, against $2.85 nationally
  • 6,600Charlotte-area searches for "estate planning attorney" in October 2025, February and March 2026, against 2,900 in August 2026
  • 720 to 880"probate attorney" searches every month from October 2025 to August 2026
  • $0.22low end of a "revocable trust" click: people reading about documents, not hiring yet

The short answer

What should estate planning marketing do for a wills, trusts and probate practice?

Estate planning marketing should keep a firm in front of people who will plan someday, catch the families who need probate help this week, and turn both into signed engagements at a cost each matter can carry.

Most planning clients know they need a will for years before they book. Probate clients have no such delay: someone has died and the court process has started. In estate law accounts we audit, we see one campaign chasing both, broad match spending on "real estate lawyer" searches, and budgets bought from people pricing a free trust form online. We plan estate planning ads, practice pages for estate planning SEO, seminars, referral partners and email follow-up as one system, judged by signed plans and opened estates.

What estate planning firms need their marketing to solve.

These are the pressures we see in wills, trusts and probate accounts. They come from a practice where the client often has no deadline, the work is often a flat fee, and the best leads come from people the client already trusts.

  • Clients who put it off

A will rarely feels urgent until a birth, a diagnosis, a sale or a death. The firm has to stay remembered for months between the first visit and the booked consultation.

  • Planning and probate kept apart

A planning client and a grieving executor search with different words, at different speeds, for different fees. Each needs its own campaign, page and intake path.

  • Referral partners who send clients

Financial advisors, CPAs, insurance agents and senior care providers see clients at the moments a plan becomes urgent. A steady referral program often beats any ad.

  • Seminars that fill and convert

Workshops on trusts, probate avoidance or long-term care still bring couples in. They need registrations, reminders and a follow-up path to a private consultation.

  • Copy the bar and the platforms accept

No promises of tax savings or "probate-free" outcomes, no "specialist" unless an attorney is board certified, and letters to families named in court filings follow solicitation rules.

  • Flat fees that need volume

Many plans sell at a set package price. Cost per signed plan has to sit well inside that fee, so cheap research clicks and form shoppers are kept out of the budget.

What families search in the Charlotte area, and when.

Monthly searches and estimated click costs in the Charlotte market for estate planning and probate searches. Rows without a Charlotte click estimate had too few bids to report one. The notes read the monthly curve and where the click costs split.

Planning searches swing, probate holds steady
"estate planning attorney" reached 6,600 Charlotte-area searches in October 2025, February 2026 and March 2026, then fell to 3,600 in April and 2,900 in August. "probate attorney" stayed between 720 and 880 every month from October 2025 to August 2026. Planning budgets can follow the curve; probate budgets should not.
Probate clicks cost more than planning clicks
The low end of a "probate attorney" click is $6.10 in the Charlotte area, against $5 for "estate planning attorney" and $3.20 for "estate planning lawyer". "probate attorney near me" ran 140 to 390 searches a month, then jumped to 1,600 in September 2026, so the probate campaign needs room to spend when demand spikes.
Document searches are research, and "estate" is ambiguous
"revocable trust" starts at $0.22 a click, "living trust" at $0.68 and "durable power of attorney" at $0.91: people reading about documents or looking for forms. They belong to practice pages, seminars and email. And "real estate lawyer" drew 1,900 Charlotte searches, all of them closings and property disputes that broad match on "estate" can buy by mistake.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.

A solo attorney drafting wills and trusts, a firm that also opens estates in probate court and an elder law practice planning for long-term care need different plans. Four things decide where an estate planning plan starts.

  • The matters you want Wills and trusts packages, probate and estate administration, trust administration, guardianship, or Medicaid and long-term care planning. Each draws different searches and fees.
  • Your referral network Firms with advisors, CPAs and senior care partners sending clients need less paid search and more partner follow-up. Firms without one start with search and seminars.
  • Flat fee or hourly A set package price caps what a signed plan can cost to win. Hourly probate and trust work can carry higher click costs, so each gets its own target.
  • Where your lawyers are licensed The Charlotte area spans two states with their own probate courts and estate laws. Ads, pages and seminars stay where the firm’s attorneys can practice.

Data sets the planning budget around the fall and late winter peaks, holds probate spend level through the year, and shows which matters and which referral sources turn into signed engagements at the best cost.

If a Charlotte estate planning firm came to us, here is how we would start.

This is the plan we would bring to a wills, trusts and probate practice, built for a fictional Charlotte firm on real Charlotte search numbers. Thistlecombe Law, its phone number and its website are invented. Sample data shows the kind of results a campaign like this tracks; it is not a client result and not a promise.

How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent

We would run four campaigns, each with its own budget and page: estate planning searches, wills and trusts, probate, and elder law and incapacity. Planning budgets rise into fall and late winter; probate stays level all year.

How our negative keyword governance protects the budget

  • Real estate closings, property and landlord disputes
  • Free will and trust forms, templates and software
  • Document definitions and "what is" searches
  • Estate sales, estate jewelry and estate auctions
  • Court records, will lookups and obituaries
  • Paralegal, trust officer and attorney jobs

"real estate lawyer" alone drew 1,900 Charlotte searches, and broad match reads "estate" in it as a fit. Trust and power of attorney definitions start under $1 a click: people looking for forms. Our specialists exclude them before launch, then review search terms every week.

Local Services Ads and the map

Local Services Ads list estate lawyer as a category of its own, which covers wills, trusts and probate. We would turn on the job types Thistlecombe Law takes and pay only for leads in its service area. Once its attorneys clear Google’s license and background checks, the firm shows the Google Verified badge. Its Google Business Profile matters as much: reviews that describe how the firm explained the process carry the near me searches, which reached 480 a month in Charlotte for "estate planning attorney near me".

The Facebook ad

Meta’s rules bar ads that assert or imply a viewer’s age or health, so the copy talks about documents, never "at your age". Seminars suit planning clients who are not ready to book; probate stays on search.

The email

Clients who arrive with assets and names listed reach a decision in one meeting instead of two. For seminar guests who do not book, a short monthly email keeps the firm in mind until a life event makes the plan urgent.

Estate planning marketing from Charlotte, for firms anywhere.

We are based in Charlotte, a metro where a family in Matthews and a parent in Fort Mill share one commute but fall under two states’ probate courts and estate laws. Charlotte plans use local search numbers, keep North Carolina and South Carolina matters apart, and follow the State Bar’s advertising rules. We also work nationwide: an estate planning firm in any state gets its own market data, its own probate process and its own bar’s limits.

Six places estate planning accounts lose clients.

These are the gaps we find most often when we take over an estate planning firm’s account, and the first things we change.

  1. One campaign for planning and probate

Planning clients compare and wait; executors need help now and pay more per click to reach. Mixed together, the budget drifts to whichever is cheaper. We split them, with separate pages and intake paths.

  2. Buying "real estate" searches

Broad match reads "estate" in closing, title and landlord searches, and Charlotte has thousands of them a month. We add those terms as negatives before launch and check search terms weekly.

  3. Paying for form shoppers

Trust and power of attorney definitions cost under $1 a click and rarely book. Accounts that bid on them fill with downloads, not clients. We send those searches to practice pages and seminars instead.

  4. Seminars without follow-up

A full room that never hears from the firm again is a cost, not a channel. Reminders, a thank-you email and a monthly note turn attendees into consultations over the following months.

  5. Promises a bar would flag

Lines such as "avoid probate guaranteed", tax savings figures and "estate planning specialist" claims all need care; North Carolina allows "specialist" only for lawyers the State Bar has board certified. The firm’s attorneys approve every ad, page and letter first.

  6. No referral partner program

Advisors and CPAs see clients at the exact moment a plan is needed, yet many firms never follow up with them. We track every referred client by source and keep partners updated.

Questions estate planning attorneys ask us.

What should an estate planning firm budget for search ads?

It depends on your package fees, how much probate work you want and how many clients your referral partners already send. In the Charlotte area, core planning clicks start near $5 and probate clicks near $6. We start with planning and probate searches, raise planning spend into the fall and late winter peaks, and keep probate level.

Do seminars still work for estate planning?

For many firms, yes, when they are measured by the consultations and signed plans they lead to over the following months, not by seats filled. We pair them with registration ads, reminders and email follow-up.

Should planning and probate be marketed separately?

Yes. Planning clients compare firms and wait for a life event; probate clients need help within weeks of a death. They search different words, pay different click costs and need different pages and intake.

Do bar rules apply to our estate planning ads?

Yes, to every ad, page, seminar invitation, review request and letter. Our copy describes plans and the process, avoids promised outcomes, tax figures and "specialist" claims you cannot back, and an attorney at the firm signs off on each piece before it runs.

Is SEO worth it for an estate planning practice?

Usually. Many estate searches are research: what a trust does, what an executor must do, how guardianship works. Ads should skip them, but pages that answer them well bring those families back when they are ready to book.

How do you measure success?

Signed plans and opened estates and what each cost, by channel and referral source, plus seminar attendance and consultations booked. Clicks matter only as far as they lead there.
