Business law marketing that wins the company, not just the first contract

A founder forming an LLC, an owner whose supplier walked off a deal, a buyer two months from closing: each searches differently, and each can become years of counsel. We plan search, LinkedIn, referral partners, the Google listing and follow-up around the client relationship, inside attorney advertising rules, and judge every dollar by retained clients and the work that follows.

  • $11.75low end of a Charlotte-area "llc lawyer" click, the most expensive term in the plan
  • 50 to 210Charlotte-area "business lawyer" searches a month from October 2025 to March 2026, before spikes of 6,600 in May and 5,400 in September 2026
  • 2,400monthly Charlotte-area searches for "limited liability corporation", mostly owners reading about filing on their own
  • $3.46low end of a "business litigation attorney" click, against $9.31 for "business contract lawyer"

The short answer

What should business law marketing do for a corporate and transactional practice?

Business law marketing should reach owners at the moments they need counsel, forming a company, signing a contract, settling a dispute or selling, and turn those first matters into ongoing client relationships at a cost the relationship can carry.

A business client is rarely one matter. The LLC formed this year needs an operating agreement, a lease, vendor contracts and, one day, a sale. In business law accounts we audit, we see budgets spent on owners researching how to file their own LLC, firm-name searches for personal injury practices, and employees looking for help with a non-compete. We plan business attorney ads, practice pages for business law SEO, LinkedIn, referral partners and client email as one system, judged by retained clients and repeat matters.

What business law firms need their marketing to solve.

These are the pressures we see in corporate and transactional accounts. They come from a practice where the buyer is another business, the first matter is often small, and the best clients come from accountants, bankers and other owners.

  • One client, many matters

Formation, contracts, leases, hiring documents and an eventual sale often go to the same firm. Marketing has to win the first matter and keep the firm in view for the next ones.

  • Owners, not employees

Contract, non-compete and "sue a company" searches come from both sides. Ads and pages have to read as counsel for the business, so employee claims go elsewhere.

  • Little search for the biggest work

Mergers, acquisitions and investment rounds draw a few dozen searches a month in the Charlotte area. Those clients arrive through referrals, reputation and LinkedIn long before they search.

  • Long, quiet decisions

A company choosing outside counsel compares firms, asks its CPA and checks the attorneys’ backgrounds. The firm has to stay visible for the weeks that takes.

  • Copy the bar and the platforms accept

No promised deal outcomes, no "specialist" unless an attorney is board certified, and client names or deal values only with consent and inside the State Bar’s advertising rules.

  • Fees that mix flat and hourly

Formation packages often sell at a set price; contract review and disputes bill by the hour. Each needs its own target cost, so cheap research clicks do not eat the budget.

What business owners search in the Charlotte area, and when.

Monthly searches and estimated click costs in the Charlotte market for business law searches. Rows without a Charlotte click estimate had too few bids to report one. The notes read the monthly curve and where the click costs split.

The headline volume is two spikes
"business lawyer" averaged 1,600 Charlotte-area searches a month, but it ran 50 to 210 from October 2025 to March 2026, then jumped to 6,600 in May and 5,400 in September 2026. "business attorney near me" held between 90 and 140 every month. Bids and budgets belong on the steady months, with daily caps so a spike cannot buy weeks of broad clicks.
Formation clicks cost the most, and most LLC searches are research
"limited liability corporation" drew 2,400 Charlotte searches a month, rising from 1,600 in November 2025 to 3,600 in September 2026, at $8.08 a click: owners reading about filing on their own. The hiring searches are far smaller. "llc lawyer" had 20 a month at $11.75 and "startup lawyer" 10 at $10, so formation ads need tight terms and a page that sells the operating agreement, not the filing.
Disputes are cheap, deals are not searched, and some searches are employees
"business litigation attorney" starts at $3.46 a click, against $9.31 for "business contract lawyer". "mergers and acquisitions attorney" drew 20 searches a month, so deal work comes from referrals and LinkedIn. And "non compete agreement lawyer" went from 10 searches in August to 590 in September 2026, with employment contract searches at 480: employees, not companies.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.

A solo attorney forming LLCs for local owners, a firm acting as outside general counsel for mid-size companies and a practice that closes acquisitions need different plans. Four things decide where a business law plan starts.

  • The matters you want Formation and startup work, contracts and leases, business disputes, franchise work, or mergers and acquisitions. Each draws different searches, fees and clients.
  • Who refers your clients Firms with CPAs, bankers, brokers and other attorneys sending companies need partner follow-up and LinkedIn more than paid search. Firms without them start with search.
  • The size of company you serve A new owner searches "llc lawyer near me"; a CFO asks peers and reads attorney profiles. Company size decides the channel mix and the cost a new client can carry.
  • Where your lawyers are licensed The Charlotte area spans two states with their own corporate statutes and bar rules. Ads, pages and LinkedIn audiences stay where the firm’s attorneys can practice.

Data sets bids on the steady months of business searches, keeps employee and do-it-yourself searches out, and shows which matters and which referral sources turn into retained clients who come back.

  • New business law practice

    First clients from search

Business attorney and near me searches, formation and contract pages, and a Google listing with reviews before LinkedIn or broad bidding.

  • Outside general counsel

    Retain the company

LinkedIn to owners and finance leads, CPA and banker referral programs, and client email that brings the next contract or lease in.

  • Mergers and acquisitions

    Deals by reputation

Attorney profiles and deal-type pages, LinkedIn to owners and advisors, and referral tracking from brokers and lenders. Search stays small.

If a Charlotte business law firm came to us, here is how we would start.

This is the plan we would bring to a corporate and transactional practice, built for a fictional Charlotte firm on real Charlotte search numbers. Corbellan Law, its phone number and its website are invented. Sample data shows the kind of results a campaign like this tracks; it is not a client result and not a promise.

How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent

We would run four campaigns, each with its own budget and page: business attorney searches, formation, contracts, and disputes and deals. Bids follow the steady months, with daily caps for spikes.

Business attorney

Most of the Charlotte volume at moderate click costs. Exact and phrase match, with do-it-yourself and employee searches excluded from day one.

How our negative keyword governance protects the budget

  • LLC filing, registered agent and "what is an LLC" searches
  • Other law firms by name
  • Employment contracts, non-competes and wrongful firing
  • Personal injury and accident claims against companies
  • Contract templates, forms and free samples
  • Paralegal, contract attorney and law firm jobs

"limited liability corporation" alone drew 2,400 Charlotte searches a month at $8.08 a click, and personal injury firm names such as "shane smith law firm" drew another 1,000. "contract attorney" also means a temporary legal job. Our specialists exclude these before launch, then review search terms every week.

How we write and test the Google search ads

Each intent group gets message-matched ad copy engineered by our specialists to qualify buyers before the click and lift expected click-through rate.

Local Services Ads and the map

Local Services Ads list business lawyer and contract lawyer as categories of their own. We would turn on the job types Corbellan Law takes and pay only for leads in its service area. Once its attorneys clear Google’s license and background checks, the firm shows the Google Verified badge. Its Google Business Profile matters as much: reviews from owners about how the firm explained a deal carry the near me searches, which held at 90 to 140 a month in Charlotte for "business attorney near me".

The LinkedIn ad

Owners, CFOs and operations leaders rarely search for counsel until a matter is on the table. LinkedIn reaches them by job title, company size and industry all year, so the firm is a name they know when the CPA asks who they use.

The email

Owners who arrive with their documents get advice in one meeting instead of two. After the first matter, a quarterly note on contract renewals, leases and ownership changes keeps the firm in mind for the next one.

Business law marketing from Charlotte, for firms anywhere.

We are based in Charlotte, a metro where a company can be formed in North Carolina, run its warehouse in Fort Mill and sign its lease in Rock Hill. Charlotte plans use local search numbers, keep North Carolina and South Carolina matters with the attorneys licensed there, and follow the State Bar’s advertising rules. We also work nationwide: a business law firm in any state gets its own market data, its own corporate statutes and its own bar’s limits.

Six places business law accounts lose clients.

These are the gaps we find most often when we take over a business law firm’s account, and the first things we change.

  1. Paying for do-it-yourself filers

LLC and "limited liability" research searches cost $8 a click in Charlotte and rarely hire. Accounts that bid on them fill with owners filing their own papers. We exclude them and send formation ads to an operating agreement page.

  2. Buying employee searches

Non-compete, employment contract and "sue a company" searches come from both sides. Without negatives and clear ad copy, a business firm pays for employee claims it will not take.

  3. Budgets set on spike months

Broad business lawyer searches jump for a month or two, then fall back. Bids raised on the average buy expensive clicks in quiet months. We bid on the steady terms and cap the broad ones.

  4. Judging by the first matter

A single formation can turn into years of contracts, leases and a sale. Reports that stop at the first engagement cut the channels that bring the best clients. We track repeat matters by source.

  5. Claims a bar would flag

Lines such as "we win every deal", named client logos without consent and "business law specialist" all need care; North Carolina allows "specialist" only for lawyers the State Bar has board certified. The firm’s attorneys approve every ad, page and post first.

  6. No referral partner program

CPAs, bankers and brokers see owners at formation, financing and sale, yet many firms never follow up with them. We track every referred company by partner and keep partners updated.

Questions business attorneys ask us.

What should a business law firm budget for search ads?

It depends on the matters you want, the size of company you serve and how many clients your referral partners already send. In the Charlotte area, core business attorney clicks start near $5 and formation clicks near $10 to $12. We start with business attorney and contract searches, bid on the steady months and cap broad terms when they spike.

Is LinkedIn worth it for a business law practice?

For firms serving established companies, usually, because owners and finance leads rarely search for counsel until a matter is on the table. We judge it by the consultations and retained clients it leads to, not by clicks or followers.

How do you keep employee claims out of our ads?

With negative keywords for non-compete, employment contract and wrongful firing searches, ad copy that names companies and owners, and a form that asks for the company name. Inquiries that still come in are counted apart in reporting.

Do bar rules apply to our business law ads?

Yes, to every ad, page, LinkedIn post, review request and email. Our copy describes matters and the process, avoids promised outcomes, client names without consent and "specialist" claims you cannot back, and an attorney at the firm signs off on each piece before it runs.

Can search ads bring in merger and acquisition work?

A little. Acquisition searches are few in most markets, so deal work comes mainly from referrals, reputation and LinkedIn. Search supports it with attorney profiles and deal-type pages that buyers and sellers find when they check the firm.

How do you measure success?

Retained clients and what each cost, by channel and referral source, plus the later matters those clients open. Clicks matter only as far as they lead there.
