ActiveCampaign success story · Personal injury law firm

How a personal injury law firm doubled its email open rates with ActiveCampaign.

Parrish Law, a personal injury firm in Manassas, Virginia, sent the same plain newsletter to everyone and pulled its numbers by hand. After moving to ActiveCampaign in mid-2024, it tagged every contact by interest, showed each reader the sections that fit them and tested every subject line. Open rates rose from under 20% to 35-40%.

The results.

Compared with the firm’s earlier Mailchimp newsletters, which opened at under 20% (some months under 10%). The story’s headline gives 17% to 40%; we use the figures in its results summary. Open rates are inflated by mail privacy features, so treat them as a direction, not an exact count.

  • 100%increase in open rates, from under 20% to 35-40%
  • 10+ hourssaved per month using Active Intelligence for reporting
  • 5,000contacts, the plan limit, reached within months

Measured after the firm moved to ActiveCampaign in mid-2024. Figures as reported by the business in the story; ActiveCampaign does not publish dates or a measurement method for them.

The challenge.

Parrish Law has represented injured people in Northern Virginia since 2004, with most of its work in car accident cases. Its outreach ran on referrals, grassroots community events and a newsletter, and the people on its list ranged from past clients to teachers it had honored to families who had downloaded a safety guide.

The firm used Mailchimp, which could not give it the segments, personalization or automation it wanted. Every reader got the same plain newsletter, engagement stayed flat, and the marketing team assembled performance numbers by hand each month.

What they did.

Platform switch from Mailchimp · Tagged sign-up forms · Conditional newsletter content · Community program automations · Subject line testing

Sign-up forms that tag by interest
Separate guide downloads, for example on car accidents or dog bites, tag each new contact automatically, and each tag starts its own automated email series.
One newsletter, many versions
Using segments and conditional content, each newsletter shows readers the sections that match their tags, so one send feels personal to everyone.
Community programs on autopilot
A weekly teacher award, a summer outdoor program for families and seasonal client gifts run through automations: entries, confirmations, reminders and follow-ups go out without staff time.
Subject lines tested every time
Subject lines and preheaders are A/B tested, and the winning version goes to the rest of the list automatically.
Reporting in seconds
Active Intelligence answers performance questions directly, replacing the monthly spreadsheets.

Why it worked.

Our read on the decisions behind the numbers, and what any business can take from them.

Relevance gets opened
A reader who downloaded a dog bite guide wants different news from a teacher the firm honored. Showing each person their own sections made the newsletter worth opening.
Staying top of mind is the business
Injury cases come from people who remember the firm when something happens to them or a friend. Regular, useful email keeps that memory fresh between needs.
Community work becomes a list
Award nominations and family programs bring new, warm contacts into the database, and automation keeps them engaged without extra staff.
Testing compounds
Testing every subject line is a small habit that keeps lifting results over hundreds of sends.
