Optometrists
Optometry marketing for the exam chair and the frame wall
An optometry practice sells two things: the eye exam and the glasses or contacts that follow it. We plan your search ads, Google listings, social ads and email around both, around the January exam peak and the summer eyewear season, and inside the ad policy and privacy limits of healthcare.
- 8,100"eye doctor near me" searches a month in the Charlotte area, on average across the year
- 5,400 to 1,600"eye exam near me" searches in the Charlotte area, January 2026 against July 2026
- 7,300+Charlotte-area searches a month that name a national optical chain or online glasses seller
- $3.65 to $12.84estimated cost of one click on "eye exam near me" in Charlotte
The short answer
What makes optometry marketing different from other healthcare marketing?
Optometry marketing has to fill the exam schedule and sell the eyewear that follows the exam, against national optical chains and online glasses sellers that compete for the same patients and the same searches.
The exam is the visit; the frames, lenses and contacts are often where the practice earns its margin, and the two run on different calendars. Exam searches peak in the winter months when vision benefits reset, while prescription sunglasses peak in July. Optometrist is one of the health categories that can run Local Services Ads, so the practice can sit above the search ads with a Google Verified badge. Eye conditions are sensitive topics for audience targeting, so ads target places and searches, not people. We plan optometry ads, the practice’s Google Business Profile, social ads, optometry SEO and patient email as one system, and read results as booked exams and eyewear orders.
As an optometry marketing agency, we build optometry digital marketing plans around each office’s chair time, optical inventory and the vision plans it accepts.
What optometry practices need their marketing to solve.
These are the pressures we see in optometry accounts, from a single independent office to a group with several locations and its own optical. They are why an eye care plan looks different from a practice that only books visits.
-
Two sales in one visit
The exam fills the chair, and the optical turns the new prescription into frames, lenses or contacts. Marketing that counts only booked exams misses half the practice.
-
Chains and online sellers
National optical chains, big-box opticals and online glasses sellers bid on the same searches and advertise low prices on exams and frames every week.
-
A benefits calendar
Vision plans reset in January and flexible spending deadlines land in December, so exam demand bunches into the winter and thins out by midsummer.
-
Insurance decides the shortlist
Patients search for a doctor who takes their vision plan or Medicaid before they compare anything else, and a wrong answer on the phone loses the booking.
-
Families and children
Parents book school-age exams in late summer and want a doctor who sees children, which is a different page, ad and schedule from adult contact lens fittings.
-
Medical eye care to grow
Dry eye, myopia management and urgent eye visits are billed differently from routine exams and need their own searches, pages and tracking.
What patients search when they need an eye doctor, and when.
Monthly searches and estimated click costs for the searches an optometry practice competes for. Most volume sits on a few "near me" terms; the exam, eyewear and insurance searches below them carry the seasons and the margin.
| Search | US / mo | Est. click cost, Charlotte |
|---|---|---|
| eye doctor near me | 450,000 | $2.87 to $9.76 |
| optometrist near me | 301,000 | $2.11 to $8.31 |
| eye exam near me | 201,000 | $3.65 to $12.84 |
| eye doctor charlotte | 1,900 | $4.19 to $11.87 |
| eye glasses near me | 135,000 | $1.18 to $4.74 |

- Exams peak in January, not in back-to-school
- "Eye exam near me" climbed from 3,600 Charlotte-area searches in November 2025 to 4,400 in December and 5,400 in January 2026, then fell to 1,600 in July. The winter months, when benefits reset and spending accounts run out, carry the exam budget.
- Eyewear runs on a summer calendar
- "Sunglasses prescription" sat at 590 searches a month from October 2025 to January 2026, then rose to 1,300 in March and April and 2,400 in July 2026. The optical needs its own budget in the months the exam campaigns slow down.
- Exam clicks cost about three times eyewear clicks
- Clicks on "eye exam near me" start at $3.65 in Charlotte, against $1.18 for "eye glasses near me" and $1.53 for prescription sunglasses. One cost per lead target for both would starve the exams or overpay for the frames.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.
An independent office with one doctor and a group with several locations, a large optical and a dry eye clinic need different plans. Four things decide where an optometry plan starts.
- Your goals More new patient exams, more contact lens fittings, a busier optical, more children, or a medical eye care line such as dry eye. Each starts with a different keyword group, page and offer.
- Your timeline Search ads and Local Services Ads can fill open exam slots within days. Reviews, the pages that rank for "optometrist near me" and recall email build over months.
- Your budget With exam clicks starting near $3.65 and eyewear clicks near $1.18, a smaller budget goes to exams in December and January and to the optical from March to August.
- Your competition Chains and online sellers win on price. An independent practice wins on the doctor, the vision plans it takes, same-week appointments, frame selection and reviews that mention the care.
Data sets the budget by office and by season, ties every booked exam and optical order to the search, listing or ad that started it without the reason for the visit, and shows which channels bring patients back for their next annual exam.
Independent single office
Own the few miles around the door
A complete Google profile, Local Services Ads, a tight exam campaign with online booking and a review request after every visit, with the optical promoted to patients who just had an exam.
Multi-location group
Fund each office on its own numbers
A campaign, listing and budget per office, moved toward the locations with open chair time, with exams and optical sales reported apart by location.
Practice with medical eye care
Grow the services routine exams miss
Routine exam campaigns plus separate lines for dry eye, myopia management and urgent eye visits, each with its own page, budget and tracking, and no claims about outcomes.
If an optometry practice came to us, here is how we would start.
This is the pitch we would give a real client, built for a fictional Charlotte optometry practice with real search data. The business, its phone number and its website are invented. Sample data shows the kind of results a campaign like this tracks; it is not a client result and not a promise.

How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent
We would split the account by what the patient is searching for, because each group has its own click cost, season and page. Budget then moves to exams in the winter and to the optical from spring into summer.

How our negative keyword governance protects the budget
- National optical chain and online seller names
- Prescription eye drop brand names
- Home remedies and over-the-counter drops
- Jobs, optician school and optometry school
- Designer frame shopping with no local intent
- Free exam and coupon hunting
Eye care searches pull in brand searches for chains and online sellers, people shopping for eye drops, job seekers and bargain hunters who will not book. Our specialists load these exclusions before launch and review the search terms every week, so the budget reaches patients who will sit in the exam chair.
How we write and test the Google search ads
Each intent group gets message-matched ad copy engineered by our specialists to qualify buyers before the click and lift expected click-through rate.

Local Services Ads and the map
Optometrist is one of the health care categories that can run Local Services Ads, which sit above the search ads and charge per lead rather than per click. The practice completes Google’s checks for its doctors, and once approved its listing shows a Google Verified badge. We would set the services, hours and vision plans it takes, and dispute leads that were not real patients. The same reviews feed the Google Business Profile that carries the "eye doctor near me" map, where evening and Saturday hours, the plans accepted and real photos of the optical decide the call. Every review gets a reply that never confirms a patient’s care.
The Instagram ad
Social ads sell the optical, which is visual and seasonal, and keep the practice known in the few miles around it. Meta does not allow ads that assert or imply a viewer’s health, so the ad shows frames and the practice, never the viewer’s eyesight, and targets by location rather than by health interests.
The email
This goes only to past patients who agreed to receive email, sent from the practice’s own system, and it names a calendar date, never a past diagnosis or prescription. A December send fills the January peak with patients who already know the practice.
A new year of vision benefits starts soon.
Many vision plans renew in January, and appointments fill quickly in the first weeks of the year. Book your annual eye exam online now, and our opticians can help you choose new frames or order contacts at the same visit.
Book my eye examThe landing page the ads send people to
A new patient wants three answers: will my plan cover it, when can I come in and can I get glasses here. The page answers those first, lists the vision plans by name and keeps the booking form to a name, a phone number and a time, leaving health history for the intake at the office.

- Exams and optical ordersCompleted exams and eyewear orders counted from the practice management system and matched to the source in aggregate, sent back to Google only where the practice’s privacy review allows it.

Optometry digital marketing services, and which come first.
The four core services carry most optometry plans. The others join as the practice adds offices or a medical eye care line; a single office and a multi-location group rarely need the same mix.

Optometry marketing in Charlotte, office by office.
We are based in Charlotte, where independent optometrists compete with national optical chains, big-box opticals and online glasses sellers for the same "eye doctor near me" searches, and where a patient picks an office close to home or work that takes their plan. We plan each office on its own radius, vision plans and chair time, fund the winter exam peak, and move budget to the optical from spring into summer. We also work with optometry practices and eye care groups nationwide, as one of the optometry marketing services teams that plans from local data; the searches, the vision plans and the competition change by market, and the plan changes with them.
Six growth leaks we fix in optometry ad accounts.
When we take over optometry accounts, these are the places we most often find patients and optical sales leaking, and what we change first.
Exams and eyewear in one campaign
Eyewear clicks start at $1.18 in Charlotte and exam clicks at $3.65, so a blended campaign drifts toward cheap frame shoppers. We run exams and the optical as separate campaigns with separate goals.
A flat budget across the year
"Eye exam near me" fell from 5,400 Charlotte searches in January to 1,600 in July. We weight exam spend toward November to January and shift money to the optical as prescription sunglasses searches climb into July.
Paying for chain shoppers
Thousands of local searches each month name a national chain or an online seller, and those clicks rarely book with an independent office. We exclude chain and seller names and win on the doctor, the plans and the service.
Hiding the vision plans
Patients search for a doctor who takes their plan or Medicaid before anything else. We list accepted plans on the landing page, the Google profile and the ad sitelinks, so the answer is there before the call.
Counting bookings, not exams and orders
A booking that never shows, or an exam with no optical order, looks the same as a full visit in most accounts. We import completed exams and orders in aggregate so bidding follows real patients.
Reviews that confirm a diagnosis
A reply that mentions a patient’s eye condition or prescription confirms care they never agreed to share. We set a reply standard that thanks the patient in general terms and moves details to a phone call.
Questions optometry practice owners ask us.
How much should an optometry practice spend on advertising?
It depends on how many offices you run, how much chair time is open, the size of your optical and which services you want to grow. Eye exam clicks in Charlotte start around $3.65 and eyewear clicks around $1.18, so we budget exams and the optical apart, weighted to their seasons, then adjust as exam and order data comes in.
When do patients search for eye exams?
All year, with a winter peak. In the Charlotte area "eye exam near me" reached 5,400 searches in January 2026 and fell to 1,600 in July. Prescription sunglasses searches move the other way, peaking at 2,400 in July.
Can optometrists run Local Services Ads?
Yes. Optometrist is one of the health care categories Google lists for Local Services Ads in the US. The practice completes Google’s checks for its doctors, then appears above the search ads with a Google Verified badge and pays per lead.
How do we compete with optical chains and online glasses sellers?
Not on price. We keep chain and seller searches out of the account, put the doctor, the vision plans you accept, same-week appointments and your frame selection in front of local patients, and earn reviews that mention the care.
Can we target ads to people with vision problems?
No. Google and Meta treat health conditions as sensitive, so ads cannot target people by eye condition or imply what a viewer has. We target places and searches, write ads about the practice and its services, and keep health details out of audience lists.
Do you work with optometry practices outside Charlotte?
Yes. We are based in Charlotte and work with optometry practices and eye care groups across the US. The method is the same; the click costs, the vision plans and the competition change by market.
