Mental health and therapy
Therapist marketing that fills open hours, not just inboxes
In the Charlotte area, people search for a therapist at the same pace almost every month of the year. We plan search ads, your Google profile, social ads and email around open caseload and client fit, inside the privacy and ad policy limits that mental health care carries.
- 4,400"therapist near me" searches in the Charlotte area in every month from November 2025 to September 2026
- $8.13 to $28.23estimated cost of one click on "therapist near me" in Charlotte
- 1,000"marriage counseling near me" searches in October 2025, against 590 in December
- 590 to 320"child therapist near me" searches, October 2025 against each summer month of 2026
The short answer
What makes therapist marketing different from other healthcare marketing?
Therapist marketing works with steady demand, expensive clicks and the strictest privacy rules in local advertising, so the plan is set by open hours and client fit rather than by the calendar.
A therapy practice rarely lacks searches. It lacks the right person reaching the clinician who has an opening, takes their insurance and treats what they need. Mental health counseling is a sensitive category on Google, which rules out the customer lists and site-visitor audiences most local businesses lean on, and Meta does not allow ads that assert or imply a person’s health. The common leaks are budgets that outrun a full caseload and tracking that sends too much. We plan therapist advertising, the Google Business Profile, social ads, therapist SEO and intake email as one system, and we read results as consults that became ongoing clients.
What therapy practices need their marketing to solve.
These are the pressures we see in counseling and group practice accounts. They are why a therapy plan is built differently from a dermatology or urgent care plan.
-
Demand without a season
Charlotte-area therapist searches barely move from month to month. The limit is not the calendar but how many open hours each clinician has, so spend has to follow the caseload.
-
Ads inside a sensitive category
Mental health counseling cannot use customer lists, lookalikes or remarketing lists on Google, and social ads may not imply a viewer’s condition. The plan has to win on search intent, place and the message itself.
-
Tracking that knows when to stop
A booked consult can be counted. What the person came in for, and what they typed into the intake form, should never reach an ad platform.
-
The right clinician for the person
People search by who they want to see as much as by what they need: a Christian counselor, a Black therapist, someone for teens or couples. Fit decides who books and who stays past the first session.
-
Insurance and private pay
Some searchers need a therapist in their network; others pay privately for a specialist. Mixing both in one campaign wastes the most expensive clicks a practice buys.
-
A first contact that feels safe
Reaching out is hard. A clear answer on cost, insurance, telehealth and openings, and a reply within hours, decides whether the first call becomes a first session.
What people search when they look for a therapist, and when.
Monthly searches and estimated click costs for the searches a counseling or group practice competes for. The yearly averages hide the few curves that do exist, so the notes below the table read them month by month.
| Search | US / mo | Est. click cost, Charlotte |
|---|---|---|
| therapist near me | 368,000 | $8.13 to $28.23 |
| therapist charlotte nc | 1,900 | $10.12 to $32.09 |
| marriage counseling near me | 74,000 | $4.80 to $17.57 |
| counseling near me | 60,500 | $5.49 to $21.04 |
| marriage counseling charlotte nc | 880 | $6.51 to $20.23 |
| couples therapy near me | 49,500 | $7.62 to $22.06 |
| child therapist near me | 33,100 | $5.05 to $18.46 |
| adhd testing for adults | 27,100 | $2.04 to $7.27 |
| therapist near me christian | 12,100 | $5.39 to $22.13 |
| teen therapist near me | 14,800 | $5.42 to $18.41 |
- Flat all year, and costly
- "Therapist near me" in the Charlotte area held at 4,400 searches in every month from November 2025 to September 2026, after 5,400 in October 2025. With no quiet season to save for, open hours set the budget, and a click that starts at about $8 is too expensive to spend on a clinician with a full caseload.
- Couples peak in fall and midwinter
- "Marriage counseling near me" reached 1,000 searches in October 2025 and 880 in January and February 2026, and dipped to 590 in December and June. Its clicks start at $4.80, well below individual therapy, so couples work is often the cheapest new client a practice can buy.
- Children follow the school year
- "Child therapist near me" fell from 590 searches in October 2025 to 320 in every month from June to September 2026. Parents search when school is in session, so child and teen campaigns get their budget from fall through spring.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.
A solo counselor with a private-pay practice and a twenty-clinician group that takes most insurance plans need different plans. Four things decide where a therapy plan starts.
- Your goals Fill a new clinician’s caseload, grow couples or child work, move toward private pay, or open a second office. Each starts with a different keyword group and a different message.
- Your timeline Search and map ads can book consults within weeks. Therapist SEO, clinician pages and referral relationships with physicians and schools build over a year or more.
- Your budget At $8 or more a click, a smaller budget goes to the services with open hours and the few miles clients will travel, or to the whole state for telehealth.
- Your competition National telehealth brands and directories bid on the same searches. A local practice wins on in-person care, insurance fit, a named clinician and a fast, human reply.
Data sets the budget by open hours, ties every consult to the search, listing or email that started it without health details, and shows when to move money between client types.
Solo or small practice
Be found for your specialty
The Google profile, a page for each specialty and a tight search campaign on the client types with open hours, paused when the caseload fills.
Group practice
Match people to clinicians
Keyword groups by client type, clinician pages with photos, insurance and openings, and intake routing so each consult reaches the right therapist the same day.
Multi-office or telehealth practice
Grow across a state
Office-level campaigns for in-person care, statewide campaigns for telehealth within licensure, and reporting by office and clinician so budget follows open hours.
If a therapy practice came to us, here is how we would start.
This is the pitch we would give a real client, built for a fictional Charlotte group practice with real search data. The business, its phone number and its website are invented. Sample data shows the kind of results a campaign like this tracks; it is not a client result and not a promise.

How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent
We would split the account by who is searching, because each group has its own click cost, curve and clinicians. Budget then moves between groups as openings change instead of sitting in one pot.
Therapy near me
The core of the account and the most expensive clicks. Run every month, with bids tied to how many open hours the practice has that week.
| Search | Charlotte area / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| therapist near me | 4,400 | $8.13 to $28.23 |
| therapist charlotte nc | 1,600 | $10.12 to $32.09 |
| counseling near me | 720 | $5.49 to $21.04 |
| mental health therapist near me | 170 | $5.89 to $23.89 |
Couples and marriage
Cheaper clicks and a clear fall and midwinter lift. Sent to a couples page that names the clinicians who see couples and their evening hours.
| Search | Charlotte area / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| marriage counseling near me | 720 | $4.80 to $17.57 |
| marriage counseling charlotte nc | 590 | $6.51 to $20.23 |
| couples therapy near me | 480 | $7.62 to $22.06 |
Children and teens
Parents searching for their child. Funded from fall through spring, written to the parent, and sent to a page about first visits, school schedules and consent.
| Search | Charlotte area / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| child therapist near me | 390 | $5.05 to $18.46 |
| teen therapist near me | 170 | $5.42 to $18.41 |
| teen counseling near me | 90 | $5.07 to $21.46 |
Approach and fit
Smaller searches from people who know the kind of care or clinician they want. Each goes to the page of a clinician who offers exactly that.
| Search | Charlotte area / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| therapist near me christian | 260 | $5.39 to $22.13 |
| cognitive behavioural therapy near me | 170 | $4.36 to $17.46 |

How our negative keyword governance protects the budget
- Free online self-tests and quizzes
- Therapist jobs, licensure and degrees
- Physical, speech and massage therapy
- Crisis and hotline searches
- Directory and telehealth brand names
- Medication and prescription searches
Therapy searches pull in self-test takers, students, people looking for physical therapy and people who need a crisis line, not an ad. Our specialists load these exclusions before launch and review the search terms every week, so the budget reaches people ready to book a first session.
How we write and test the Google search ads
Each intent group gets message-matched ad copy engineered by our specialists to qualify buyers before the click and lift expected click-through rate.

The Google listing and the map
Most people check the map before they call a practice. The listing would show each service, the insurance plans the practice accepts, telehealth and evening hours, real photos of the office and a link straight to the consult form. Reviews work differently here: the ethics codes psychologists and counselors follow restrict asking current clients for testimonials, and a reply that confirms someone is a client can breach confidentiality. We build the profile on clinician detail, posts and photos instead, and reply to every review in general terms that never confirm a client relationship.
The Instagram ad
Social ads introduce the clinicians to adults within a short drive, by location and broad interests only, with no site-visitor or client lists. The copy describes the practice, never the viewer, because Meta does not allow ads that assert or imply a person’s mental health.
The email
This goes only to people who booked, from the practice’s own scheduling system. The subject line and the message name the visit, never a reason for it, because an inbox is not always private. Fewer first-session no-shows protect the hours every ad dollar bought.
We are glad you reached out.
Your first session is a conversation, not a test. Here is where to park, how to finish your forms online before you arrive, and how to reach us if you need to change the time. If you chose telehealth, the video link will arrive the morning of your session.
Complete my formsThe landing page the ads send people to
A person looking for a therapist usually reads two or three practices before reaching out. The page answers cost, insurance and openings first, keeps the form to a name and a way to reach them, and leaves any health detail for the intake call.

What each piece turns into, and how they hand off
- Search and the map catch the need "Therapist near me", every month.
- Clinician pages show the fit Specialty, insurance and openings.
- Intake replies within hours A consult call with the right clinician.
- Email gets them to session one Forms, parking and reminders.
How our team tracks calls, bookings and revenue
- Consult requests and callsForm requests and calls counted by channel as one event, with no service, symptom or form answer attached.
- First sessions from the practice systemBooked and attended first sessions, counted from the scheduling system and sent back to Google as a plain conversion, only where the privacy review allows it.
- Clients still attending at session fourRetention by source in the practice’s own reporting, so a channel that brings one-time visits stops looking cheap.
- A monthly report by open hoursSpend, consults and cost per first session next to each clinician’s openings, so the budget follows the caseload.

What has worked for health and care organizations.

Therapist marketing in Charlotte, office by office.
We are based in Charlotte, where most people want a therapist close to home or work for in-person sessions, and many will choose telehealth for the rest. We plan therapy campaigns around both: a tight radius around each office for in-person care, and the whole state for video sessions within each clinician’s license. We also work with counseling and group practices nationwide; the searches, the insurers and the competition change by market, and the plan changes with them.
Six growth leaks we fix in therapy practice ad accounts.
When we take over counseling and group practice accounts, these are the places we most often find consults leaking, and what we change first.
Audiences the policy does not allow
Mental health counseling is a sensitive category, and Google does not support customer lists, lookalikes or advertiser-built audiences for it. We remove them, rebuild on search intent, location and context, and keep the account in good standing.
Pixels that send too much
Default tags on intake, insurance and portal pages can pass more than a page view, and federal guidance on online tracking by health providers is the reason to be careful. We count the booked consult as a plain event and keep form answers and page topics out of ad platforms.
Ads for a caseload that is full
Spend that keeps running after a clinician fills brings consults the practice has to turn away. We tie each keyword group to the clinicians who see that client type and pause it when their openings close.
Paying for self-test clicks
"ADHD testing for adults" looks cheap at about $2 a click, but in the Charlotte data it moves with "adult adhd symptoms test", the self-screening search. We separate people booking an evaluation from people taking a quiz, and exclude the quizzes.
Copy that talks about the reader
Ads that ask whether the viewer is struggling get rejected or limited, on Meta and on Google. We write about the practice, the clinicians, insurance and openings, which also reads as calmer to the person deciding.
One budget for every client type
Couples clicks start well below individual therapy and peak in October and midwinter; child searches fall each summer. We split campaigns by client type so the budget moves to whichever has open hours and the strongest month.
Questions therapy practice owners ask us.
How much should a therapy practice spend on advertising?
It depends on how many open hours your clinicians have, which client types you want more of and whether you take insurance or private pay. Therapy clicks in Charlotte start around $5 to $10, so we set the budget from your openings and the searches around your office, and adjust it as first-session data shows what each channel returns.
Can therapists use remarketing ads?
Not in the usual way. Google treats mental health counseling as a sensitive category and does not support customer lists, lookalikes or audiences built from your site visitors for it. We plan around search intent, location, context and the Google profile, which keeps the account in good standing.
Is it safe to track conversions on a therapy website?
It can be, if the tracking is narrow. We count a consult request or a booked first session as a plain event and keep form answers, page topics and anything that hints at a condition out of ad platforms. Your privacy and legal advisers set the rules; we build the tracking to them.
Should a practice ask clients for Google reviews?
Ethics codes for psychologists and counselors restrict asking current clients for testimonials, so we do not build a review request program for therapists. The profile wins on clinician detail, insurance, hours, photos and posts, and every review gets a reply that never confirms someone is a client.
Do you work with therapy practices outside Charlotte?
Yes. We are based in Charlotte and work with counseling and group practices across the US. The method is the same; the click costs, the insurers, the telehealth rules and the competition change by market and by state.
What do you measure besides leads?
Consult requests and calls, first sessions booked and attended, cost per first session, and clients still attending after the fourth session, reported next to each clinician’s open hours. A lead count alone cannot tell a quiz-taker from a new long-term client.
