Colleges and universities

Higher education marketing that counts enrolled students, not inquiries

Students search for a program, not a college, and each program has its own season and its own price per click. We plan search, LinkedIn, social video, landing pages and admissions email around those program calendars, and we judge every channel by the applications and enrollments it brings.

  • 3.6xCharlotte-area searches for "mba" in May 2026 (3,600) against July and August (1,000 each)
  • 9xjump in Charlotte searches for "online mba programs", from 140 in December 2025 to 1,300 in August 2026
  • $35low end of the estimated click cost for "online colleges", against $4.25 for "colleges in charlotte nc"
  • 10Charlotte-area searches a month for "adult degree programs", against 390 for "accelerated nursing programs"

The short answer

What should higher education marketing be measured by?

Higher education marketing should be measured by enrolled students per program and the cost of each one, because an inquiry form costs little to fill in and says little about who will start classes.

In the college accounts we audit, the budget usually leaks in the same places: broad "online college" clicks at some of the highest prices in search, one campaign for every program even though each one peaks in a different month, and no data flowing back to the ad platforms about which inquiries applied and enrolled. We plan search ads by program, program pages and SEO in higher education, LinkedIn Ads for graduate programs, social video and admissions email as one enrollment path, and we read it as cost per application and cost per enrolled student.

What colleges and universities need their marketing to solve.

These are the pressures we see in college and university accounts, especially in adult, graduate and online programs. They are why a college plan is built differently from a private school or childcare plan.

  • A plan for each program

Nursing, business and graduate programs draw different people, at different prices per click, in different months. One campaign for the whole college lets the cheapest searches take the budget.

  • Start dates and deadlines

Every program has its own start terms and application deadlines. Budget and messages follow those dates, so spend is heavy while a cohort can still fill and light once it is closed.

  • Working adults with little time

Career changers and working nurses compare schedules, clinical placements and transfer credit before cost. Pages and ads have to answer those questions first.

  • Program names, not college names

People search "accelerated nursing programs" or "mba programs", rarely the name of a college they have not heard of. Visibility on the program searches decides who gets considered.

  • A long path to the first class

From inquiry to application to admission to the first day can take months. Admissions email and advisor calls carry most of that distance.

  • Enrollment data back in the ad platforms

Google, Meta and LinkedIn only learn from what they are told. Applications and enrollments sent back from the admissions system are what teach bidding to find students who start.

MBA searches peak in spring, online MBA searches in August
"mba" reached 3,600 Charlotte-area searches in May 2026 and 2,400 in April, then fell to 1,000 in July and August. "mba programs" peaked at 590 in May against 170 in November 2025. "online mba programs" stayed between 140 and 320 most months, then jumped to 1,300 in August 2026. Local evening programs and online programs are chosen in different months.
Online degree shoppers decide in summer
"online universities" went from 110 Charlotte searches in February 2026 to 2,400 in June, 3,600 in July and 2,900 in August, then dropped to 260 in September. Adults choosing a fall start do their research in a short summer window, and a flat monthly budget misses most of it.
The word "online" multiplies the click cost
"online colleges" starts at $35 a click in Charlotte, more than eight times "colleges in charlotte nc" at $4.25. "online rn to bsn" starts at $19.05 against $7.38 for "rn to bsn", and "online mba programs" at $15.59 against $7.44 for "mba". National online schools bid up the online searches; a college with a Charlotte campus can win the local ones for far less.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.

A college filling an accelerated nursing cohort and a university growing an online MBA need different plans. Four things decide where a higher education plan starts.

  • Your goals Fill a cohort by a deadline, grow a new program, raise graduate enrollment or lower the cost per enrolled student. Each starts with a different program and a different page.
  • Your timeline Program search and admissions email can move applications for the next start term within weeks. Program pages and SEO in higher education compound over several enrollment cycles.
  • Your program economics What an enrolled student is worth over the program sets what an inquiry can cost. Nursing and graduate programs can carry more per click than a single certificate course.
  • Your competition National online universities outbid almost everyone on online searches. We find the program and local searches where a campus, a schedule or a clinical partnership wins instead.

Data sets the budget calendar for each program, ties every application to the search, page or ad that started it, and shows which channels bring students who enroll and stay.

How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent

We would split the account by program, because each program has its own start dates, its own season and its own price per click. Each group gets its own budget, its own page and its own conversion value, so spend follows the calendar and the programs that enroll.

Nursing pathways

Career changers and working nurses with a clear goal. Steady every month, so this group runs all year and rises before each cohort deadline.

MBA

Budget weighted to April and May for the evening program and to August for the online option, when these searches peak. Plain "mba" is held back: it is mostly rankings research.

How our negative keyword governance protects the budget

  • Current student portal, login and transcript searches
  • Free courses, scholarships-only and free certificate searches
  • College jobs, faculty and staff openings
  • Programs the college does not offer
  • Rankings, reviews and named rival schools
  • High school, dual enrollment and test prep searches

With online degree clicks starting near $20 to $35, our specialists exclude current students looking for the portal, job seekers, people looking for programs Pellbrook does not teach and rankings researchers before launch, and review search terms every week so the budget reaches people ready to apply.

The campus listing and the map

"Colleges near me" and "colleges in charlotte nc" bring up a map before the ads, and people compare listings the way they compare schools. The campus listing would show the programs, the admissions office hours, real photos of the classrooms and labs, parking for evening students and a link straight to the visit and info session page. Reviews from graduates carry the most weight; we ask after graduation, never in exchange for anything, and reply to every one.

The email

An inquiry becomes an applicant when the next step is small and personal. Each email moves toward one action (an info session, a transcript review, an application), stops once the person takes it, and hands active inquiries to an advisor call.

Higher education marketing from Charlotte, for programs in every market.

We are based in Charlotte, a region with public universities, private colleges and a large community college system, and with thousands of working adults who look for nursing, business and graduate programs close to home. Local campus searches here are steady every month and cost a fraction of the online searches, so we plan around the counties a campus draws from, from Mecklenburg to York, Cabarrus and Gaston. We also work with colleges, universities and online programs nationwide, with each campaign built on its own market’s data.

Six enrollment leaks we fix in college ad accounts.

When we take over college and university accounts, these are the places we most often find applications and enrollments leaking, and what we change first.

  1. Counting inquiries as the result

When every form fill counts the same, bidding finds people who ask and never apply. We send applications and enrollments back from the admissions system, so bidding works for the students who start.

  2. One budget for every program

MBA searches peak in May, online MBA searches in August, and nursing searches stay steady. We set a budget calendar for each program from the search data and its start dates.

  3. Paying national prices for online terms

Online degree searches cost several times more than local ones because national schools bid them up. We start with program and Charlotte searches, and buy online terms only where the data shows they enroll.

  4. Sending ads to the homepage

Someone searching for an accelerated nursing program wants start dates, prerequisites and clinical sites. We build a page for each program group that answers those first, with one clear next step.

  5. Slow follow-up on new inquiries

An adult comparing programs asks several colleges in the same evening. We set up instant email, a same-day advisor call and text reminders for info sessions, and measure the time to first contact.

  6. Claims the college cannot back up

Ads that promise jobs or salaries, or blur certificates and degrees, invite disapprovals and complaints. We write ads around facts the college can show: programs, schedules, start dates and student stories.

Questions college marketing and admissions leaders ask us.

What should a college spend on paid search?

It depends on the programs, what an enrolled student is worth over each one, how many seats each start term has and how crowded the program searches are. We start from each program’s searches and click costs, set a budget calendar around its start dates, and adjust it as application and enrollment data show what each channel returns.

Should we bid on "online college" searches?

Only where the data says they pay. Online degree searches and broad queries like top marketing universities carry high click costs or rankings intent. We start with program searches and local searches, and test online terms with a capped budget and a dedicated page.

Can you work with our admissions software?

Yes. We connect the ad platforms to the admissions or CRM system the college already uses, so inquiries, applications and enrollments flow back as conversions, and we report by program from the same data.

When should we start marketing for a fall start?

Earlier than most colleges do. Charlotte searches for online universities peaked in June and July 2026, and MBA searches in April and May. We plan each program’s calendar from its own search curve and its application deadlines.

Do you work with colleges outside Charlotte?

Yes. As a higher education ad agency based in Charlotte, we work with colleges, universities and online programs across the US. The method is the same everywhere; the programs, the competitors and the search calendar change.

What do you measure besides inquiries?

Applications, admitted students, enrollments and cost per enrolled student by program and channel. An inquiry count alone cannot tell a curious browser from a nurse ready to start in January, so admissions data is part of the reporting.
