Tutoring and test prep

Tutoring business marketing that sells packages, not practice tests

Most test prep searches are students looking for a free practice exam. The families who pay for a tutor search in different words, at different times and at a much higher price per click. We plan search, the Google listing, social ads to parents, program pages and follow-up email around those families, and judge them by consultations held and packages sold.

  • $10.70low end of the Charlotte click cost for "sat tutoring near me", against $0.73 for "sat practice test"
  • 6.3xCharlotte-area searches for "act prep" in February and March 2026 (880 each) against July 2026 (140)
  • 40xCharlotte searches for "psat practice test" in October 2025 (3,600) against December to February (90 a month)
  • 2.3xCharlotte searches for "math tutor" in October 2025 and September 2026 (390) against December and June (170)

The short answer

What makes tutoring business marketing different from other education marketing?

Tutoring business marketing sells hours of a tutor’s time to parents, timed to report cards and test dates, so the budget follows the searches that signal a family will pay for help rather than the much larger pool of students studying alone.

In the tutoring and test prep accounts we audit, the budget usually goes where the volume is: practice tests, prep books and free study sites. Those clicks are cheap because the people behind them rarely buy. We build tutoring ads on the searches that name a tutor, a subject or a near-me need, weight them to the weeks before each test and each report card, pair them with the Google listing, social ads to parents and a page for each program, and stop selling a subject when its tutors are fully booked. Ads go to parents, since Google restricts personalized ads for users under 18. The measure is the cost of each package sold, read against what a family spends over a school year.

Rather than copying generic tutoring ads examples or broad ad tutoring templates, our specialists help you advertise tutoring services and advertise tutoring services online to parents in your enrollment zones ahead of testing and report-card windows.

What tutoring and test prep businesses need their marketing to solve.

These are the pressures we see in accounts for learning centers, independent tutors with a team and test prep companies. They are why a tutoring plan is built differently from a school or a daycare plan.

  • Paying families, not free studiers

Practice test and study guide searches dwarf tutor searches and cost a fraction as much, but they come from students working alone. Budget goes to the searches that ask for a person.

  • A calendar set by tests

PSAT in October, the school-day ACT and SAT in late winter and spring, private school entrance tests in winter. Each test opens a short window to sell a prep package.

  • The parent pays, the student learns

A parent searches, compares and pays; a teenager decides whether the sessions are worth it. Ads speak to the parent, and the program page answers both.

  • Tutor hours are the inventory

After-school hours fill first, and each subject has only so many tutors. Marketing sells the subjects and times with open seats and pauses the ones that are booked.

  • Students are minors

Most students are under 18, and the ad platforms limit how teens can be reached. Ads go to parents and site visitors, and creative shows work and rooms, not students.

  • Packages that renew

The real value is a family that stays from one semester to the next and through the next test. Progress reports and email bring them back.

Practice searches are cheap for a reason
"sat practice test" drew 1,300 Charlotte-area searches a month at $0.73 to $2.36 a click; "sat tutoring near me" drew 50 at $10.70 to $39.67. Advertisers bid fifteen times more for the smaller search because it comes from a family ready to pay, while the larger one mostly brings students looking for a free exam.
Each test has its own window
"psat practice test" hit 3,600 searches in October 2025 and fell to 90 a month from December to February. "act prep" reached 880 in February and March 2026, the run-up to the spring school-day test, then dropped to 140 in July. "isee test", a private school entrance exam, peaked at 260 in January and fell to 40 in July.
Subject tutoring follows the school year
"math tutor" sat at 390 in October 2025 and September 2026 and fell to 170 in December and June, when report cards are done. "math learning center" ran the other way, jumping to 590 in June and 880 in July 2026 as families planned summer catch-up. Broad "tutoring" peaked at 1,600 in October, March and April.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.

A math center with open after-school seats and a test prep company before the spring ACT need different plans. Four things decide where a tutoring plan starts.

  • Your programs Subject tutoring, SAT and ACT packages, private school entrance prep or summer catch-up. Each program gets its own ads, page and budget.
  • Your test calendar Search can bring consultations within weeks of a test date. Program pages, reviews and parent email are built before the October, winter and spring windows.
  • Your package economics What a package earns, how many families renew and how many tutor hours are open set what a consultation and a new family can cost.
  • Your competition National franchises, online marketplaces, independent tutors and free study sites all show up on the same searches. We find the subjects, tests and neighborhoods where you win.

Data sets the budget for each program, ties every consultation and package to the search, listing or ad that started it, and moves spend the week a test date nears or a subject fills.

If a tutoring center came to us, here is how we would start.

This is the pitch we would give a real client, built for a fictional Matthews tutoring and test prep center with real search data. The center, its phone number and its website are invented. Sample data shows the kind of results a campaign like this tracks; it is not a client result and not a promise.

How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent

We would split the account by what the family needs, because subject tutoring sells through the school year while test prep sells in short windows before each test date. Each group gets its own budget, its own program page and a radius around the center, with online sessions offered wider.

Math and subject tutoring

Parents whose child is behind in a class. The costliest clicks in the plan and the steadiest buyers, weighted to October and the spring grading period, lighter in December and June.

math tutor320$7.53 to $22.19
math tutors near me210$9.01 to $29.49

SAT and ACT prep

Cheaper clicks that mix self-study with paid help, so ads name a tutor and a package. Budget rises in the eight weeks before each test date and in February and March for the spring ACT.

How our negative keyword governance protects the budget

  • Free practice tests, answer keys and study sites
  • Tutoring jobs and becoming a tutor
  • Adult licensing and graduate exams the center does not prep, such as nursing, LSAT and MCAT
  • Named franchises and online marketplaces
  • Homework answers and worksheet downloads
  • Subjects and grade levels the center does not teach

Test prep searches pull in students looking for free material, tutors looking for work and adults studying for professional exams. Our specialists exclude them before launch and review search terms every week, so the budget reaches parents who can enroll.

How we write and test the Google search ads

Each intent group gets message-matched ad copy engineered by our specialists to qualify buyers before the click and lift expected click-through rate.

The center listing and the map

"Tutoring near me" and "math tutor" bring up the map, and parents compare the listings before they call. The listing would name each subject and test, show the after-school hours, photos of the study rooms and the entry, and a link to book an assessment. We ask families for reviews once a term ends, never in exchange for anything, and reply to every one, so the listing speaks to results parents saw rather than promises.

The Facebook ad

Parents start planning test prep weeks before they search. These ads reach adults near the center and people who visited a program page, never students and never anyone chosen by data about their children, and they show worksheets and study rooms, not students.

The email

A practice test or assessment with no follow-up is the costliest leak in a tutoring account. A results email and a call with the tutor turn more of those visits into packages, and a term-end report brings families back for the next test.

Tutoring marketing from Charlotte, for learning centers in every market.

We are based in Charlotte, where families in Matthews, Huntersville, Concord and the suburbs around the city weigh franchises, independent tutors, online marketplaces and free study sites for the same help. Parents bring a child to a center after school, so we plan each location on the search data of its own few miles, and we plan online tutoring on the wider market it can serve. We also work with tutoring centers and test prep companies nationwide, with each campaign built on its own market’s data.

Six enrollment leaks we fix in tutoring ad accounts.

When we take over tutoring and test prep accounts, these are the places we most often find inquiries and packages leaking, and what we change first.

  1. Bidding on free practice tests

Practice test searches are huge and cheap, so they soak up the budget and bring students who want a free exam. We exclude them and spend on the searches that ask for a tutor or a class.

  2. One calendar for every program

Test prep runs at the same budget all year while the PSAT, ACT and entrance test windows come and go. We raise each program before its test date and pull back after it.

  3. Selling subjects with no open tutors

Ads that bring math inquiries when every math tutor is booked waste the budget and the parent’s first impression. We tie ads to open tutor hours by subject.

  4. Targeting students instead of parents

Ads aimed at teenagers run into platform limits on teen targeting and reach people who do not pay. We aim at parents and site visitors, and keep students out of the creative.

  5. An assessment with no follow-up

Families take the free assessment or practice test and hear nothing for days. We send results the same day with a call to the tutor, then a reminder before the next test.

  6. Counting leads, not packages

Accounts optimized for form fills buy the cheapest inquiries. We send packages sold and renewals back to the ad platforms so bidding learns which families enroll.

Questions tutoring and test prep owners ask us.

What should a tutoring center spend on ads?

It depends on how many tutor hours are open, what a package earns and how crowded the searches are around the center. We start from the searches and click costs in your area, set a budget for each program with open hours, and adjust it as assessment and package data come in.

When should we advertise SAT and ACT prep?

Ahead of each test date. In the Charlotte area, "act prep" searches reached 880 in February and March 2026 against 140 in July, and "psat practice test" hit 3,600 in October 2025. Pages, the listing and parent email should be ready a few weeks before each window.

Should we bid on practice test searches?

Rarely. They bring large numbers of students looking for a free exam, at a fraction of the cost of tutor searches for a reason. We exclude most of them and use a free practice test of your own as the offer on tutor-intent searches.

Can we advertise to students directly?

Most students are minors, and the ad platforms limit how teens can be reached. We aim ads at parents near the center and people who visited your pages, and we keep students out of photos unless parents give written consent.

Do online tutoring and in-person tutoring need different campaigns?

Yes. In-person tutoring is sold within a short drive of the center, while online sessions can be offered across a state or the country. They get separate campaigns, pages and budgets, judged on their own cost per package.

Do you work with tutoring businesses outside Charlotte?

Yes. We are based in Charlotte and work with tutoring centers and test prep companies across the US. The method is the same everywhere; the test calendar, the competitors and the radius change with each market.
