Distributors and wholesalers

Distributor marketing that fills the counter and opens trade accounts

Contractors and facility buyers search for the nearest supply house that has the part, then they keep coming back to the one that had it. We plan search ads, branch listings, product feeds and account email around each product line, and we judge every channel by new trade accounts and repeat orders.

  • 1,600Charlotte-area searches for "hvac supply near me" in June and July 2026, against 880 most months
  • $2.60low end of a Charlotte click on "hvac supply near me", against $0.19 for "electrical supply near me"
  • 5,400Charlotte-area searches a month for one national plumbing distributor by name
  • 1,900Charlotte-area searches for "plumbing supply near me" in 11 of 12 months

The short answer

What should distributor marketing deliver?

Distributor marketing should deliver new trade accounts that keep ordering, and more of each existing account’s spend, at a cost the margin on the product line can carry.

A distributor does not sell one thing. HVAC equipment, plumbing pipe and electrical parts are searched in different months, by different trades, at click costs that differ by ten times or more. In the distributor accounts we audit, all of them usually share one campaign and one budget, so the cheapest product line takes the money and the most valuable one goes short. We plan search ads, branch listings on Google Business Profile, Shopping ads for stocked items and account email by product line, and we read results as new accounts opened and first orders placed, not as clicks or calls.

What distributors and wholesalers need their marketing to solve.

These are the pressures we see in supply houses, wholesale distributors and trade counters. They are why a distributor plan is built differently from a manufacturer’s or a 3PL’s.

  • Trade accounts, not one-time buyers

A contractor who opens an account can order every week for years. The first order is the expensive part; the account is what pays for it.

  • Product lines with their own seasons

HVAC parts peak with the summer heat, plumbing supply barely moves through the year. Each line needs its own budget and its own calendar.

  • The nearest branch with the part

Most counter searches end in "near me". Branch hours, stock and the map listing decide which supply house gets the call before the van leaves.

  • National names in every search

The largest distributors are searched by name more than the products are. A regional supplier wins on availability, location and service, and has to say so.

  • More of each account’s spend

Most contractors buy from two or three suppliers. Email, reorder reminders and new line launches move a bigger share of their orders to one counter.

  • Trade buyers, not homeowners or resale shoppers

Supply searches draw homeowners looking for an installer and people sourcing products to resell. Both cost the same click as a contractor with an account.

What trade buyers search, and when.

Monthly searches and Charlotte-area estimated click costs for the searches a regional supply house competes for. The yearly averages hide how differently each product line moves, so the notes below read the monthly curve.

HVAC counters have a summer, plumbing counters do not
In the Charlotte area, "hvac supply near me" held at 880 to 1,000 searches a month from October 2025 to May 2026, jumped to 1,600 in June and July 2026, and eased to 1,300 in August. "ac supply near me" went from 40 in the winter months to 170 in July. "plumbing supply near me" stayed at 1,900 in every month except April 2026 (2,400).
The national names out-search the products
One national plumbing and HVAC distributor was searched by name about 5,400 times a month in the Charlotte area under a single spelling, almost three times "plumbing supply near me". A regional supply house rarely wins that name; it wins the "near me" search, the map and the contractor who already has an account.
Each trade pays a different price per click
The low end of a Charlotte click is $2.60 for "hvac supply near me", $0.97 for "plumbing supply near me" and $0.19 for "electrical supply near me"; at the high end, "plumbing supply charlotte nc" reaches $16.39. One shared budget lets the cheapest line take the clicks while the line with the summer peak runs short.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.

A three-branch supply house, a national online wholesaler and a specialty distributor with one warehouse need different plans. Four things decide where a distributor plan starts.

  • Your goals More trade accounts, more counter traffic, a new product line launched or a bigger share of existing accounts. Each starts with a different campaign and a different offer.
  • Your timeline Branch listings and "near me" search ads bring calls within weeks. Product pages that rank for part numbers and categories build over months.
  • Your margins by line Equipment and specialty parts carry margins that can pay for a higher click. Commodity pipe and wire need cheap traffic and repeat orders to work.
  • Your branches and reach Where the counters are, how far delivery runs and whether online ordering exists decide whether the plan is local, regional or national.

Data sets the budget by product line and month, ties each call and account application to the search that started it, and shows which lines bring accounts that keep ordering.

  • Branch-based supply house

    Counter traffic and local accounts

A profile for every branch, "near me" search ads by product line, and email that brings account customers back each week.

  • Online or national wholesaler

    Catalog buyers across the country

Product feeds and Shopping ads for stocked items, Microsoft Ads for buyers ordering at work, and reorder email from purchase history.

  • Specialty distributor

How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent

We would split the account by product line, because each line has its own season and its own click cost. Each group gets its own budget and a landing page with branch stock, hours and the trade account form.

HVAC supply

The most expensive clicks and the only line with a summer peak. Budget rises from late May through August and steps back in the fall.

SearchCharlotte area / moEst. click cost
hvac supply near me1,000$2.60 to $13.45
hvac supply house near me260$2.46 to $12.50
hvac supply260$1.32 to $8.16
supply house hvac90$1.04 to $8.86
ac supply near me70$3.24 to $12.04

Plumbing supply

The steady base of the account: the same demand every month, cheaper clicks, and the largest volume of counter calls.

SearchCharlotte area / moEst. click cost
plumbing supply near me1,900$0.97 to $10.73

plumbing supply house near me90$0.74 to $3.33
pipe supply near me90$1.72 to $7.13

Wholesale and distributor searches

Small and mixed: some are contractors, many are people sourcing products to resell. Exact match only, and kept only if it opens trade accounts.

SearchCharlotte area / moEst. click cost
wholesale distributors70$2.52 to $9.34
distributors near me70$2.01 to $11.77

How our negative keyword governance protects the budget

  • Homeowner repair and installer searches
  • Resale, dropshipping and product sourcing
  • Jobs, careers and counter positions
  • Big-box retail store names
  • Do-it-yourself and repair videos
  • Product lines Pellridge does not stock

Homeowners looking for someone to replace a water heater, people sourcing goods to resell and job seekers all click supply-house ads. Our specialists exclude them before launch and review search terms every week, so the budget reaches contractors and facility buyers.

How we write and test the Google search ads

Each intent group gets message-matched ad copy engineered by our specialists to qualify buyers before the click and lift expected click-through rate.

The Facebook ad

Many contractors run their business from a phone and scroll in the evening. These ads reach HVAC and plumbing contractors in the branch areas, and retarget visitors who looked at the account page but did not apply.

How our team tracks calls, bookings and revenue

  • Calls and account applicationsCalls to each branch and account applications recorded in Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, Meta and analytics, by product line and landing page.
  • Accounts opened in the ERPApproved accounts sent back to the ad platforms as conversions, so bidding learns which searches bring contractors who qualify.
  • First and repeat ordersOrder values from the ERP tied to the account and the click that started it, so the budget follows the product lines that pay.
  • A monthly account reportSpend, calls, applications, accounts opened, first orders and repeat orders by product line and branch, compared with the same month last year.

Distributor marketing in Charlotte, branch by branch.

We are based in Charlotte, where supply houses serve a fast-growing region of contractors from uptown job sites to the newer suburbs in every direction. We plan distributor campaigns around the towns each branch can serve before the first job of the day, with a budget for each counter and a plan for jobsite delivery. We also work with distributors and wholesalers nationwide, from single-branch supply houses to online wholesalers shipping across the country.

Six growth leaks we fix in distributor ad accounts.

When we take over distributor and wholesale accounts, these are the places we most often find accounts and orders leaking, and what we change first.

  1. One campaign for every product line

HVAC, plumbing and electrical in one campaign means the cheapest clicks win. We give each line its own budget and its own landing page, so the line with the best margin is never starved.

  2. A flat HVAC budget through the summer

Charlotte "hvac supply near me" searches nearly doubled in June and July 2026. We raise the HVAC budget ahead of the heat and step it back in the fall, while plumbing stays steady.

  3. Paying for homeowners

Homeowners searching "water heater replacement" want an installer, not a counter, and the low end of that Charlotte click is $7.51. We keep homeowner repair searches out and write ads that speak to the trade.

  4. Letting resale shoppers in through "wholesale"

"wholesale" searches are full of people sourcing goods to resell; "dropshipper" alone draws about 2,400 Charlotte-area searches a month. We hold wholesale terms to exact match and judge them by approved accounts.

  5. Counting calls instead of accounts

A call to check a price counts the same as a new contractor applying. We send approved accounts and first orders from the ERP back to the ad platforms, so bidding finds more of the buyers who order.

  6. Treating account customers like strangers

Existing accounts see the same ads as everyone else, or none at all. We use the account list for new product lines and seasonal stock, and to find new contractors who look like the best accounts.

Questions distributors and wholesalers ask us.

What should a distributor spend on search ads?

It depends on how many branches you run, which product lines carry the margin and what a trade account orders in a year. When advertising distributor product lines, we start from the searches for each line and their click costs, set a budget that follows each line’s season, and adjust it as account and order data show what each line returns.

Should we bid on the big distributors’ names?

Sometimes, in a separate test. Those names are searched more than the products, but most of those buyers already have an account there. We test them with a clear reason to switch, such as a closer branch or stock on hand, and keep them only if they open accounts.

Do Shopping ads work for a distributor with trade pricing?

They work for stocked items with a public price, especially for buyers who search by part. Contract and account pricing stays behind the login; the ad brings the buyer in, and the account offer does the rest.

Is a wholesale marketing strategy different from retail?

Yes. A retail sale ends at the register; a wholesale account starts there. The wholesale marketing strategy we build is judged by accounts opened, first orders and the share of each account’s spend, not by one sale or the return on one ad.

Do you work with distributors outside Charlotte?

Yes. We are based in Charlotte and work with distributors and wholesalers nationwide. The method is the same everywhere; the branches, the product lines and their seasons change.

What do you measure besides calls?

Account applications, approved accounts, first orders, repeat orders and order value by product line and branch. A call count alone cannot tell a price check from a new contractor, so ERP data is part of the reporting.
