Insurance agencies
Insurance agency marketing that grows households, not quote requests
Quote searches are the most expensive clicks an agency can buy, and the cheapest first policy often leads to the most valuable household. We plan search, your agency listing, social ads inside the insurance ad rules and cross-sell email around policies per household and renewals, and we count bound policies, not leads.
- $15.15low end of the estimated click cost for "renters insurance" in Charlotte, against $67.68 for "car insurance quotes"
- 9,900Charlotte-area searches for "renters insurance" in May 2026, against 2,400 in November 2025
- 14,800Charlotte-area searches a month for a single carrier’s name, more than for "car insurance quotes"
- 1,600Charlotte-area searches for "medicare supplement plans" in October and November 2025, against 480 in September 2026
The short answer
What should insurance agency marketing be measured by?
Insurance agency marketing should be measured by bound policies, by how many policies each household carries, and by how many of those households renew, at a cost the commission on that household can carry.
A quote request is a price check, and a single-line household is the easiest one for a carrier’s ad to take at renewal. In the agency accounts we review, budget usually goes to quote searches priced for national carriers, to people looking for their own carrier’s login, and to reporting that stops at the form. We plan insurance agent search ads, the agency listing and local SEO for insurance agents, Facebook and Instagram ads and cross-sell email as one system, built around Meta’s insurance ad rules and each carrier’s marketing guidelines, and we measure cost per bound household and policies per household.
What insurance agencies need their marketing to solve.
These are the pressures we see at independent and captive agencies. They are why an agency plan is built differently from a bank’s or an advisor’s.
-
More policies in every household
A household with auto, home and an umbrella is far harder for a competitor to move than one with a single auto policy. The second line is where the margin is.
-
Quote clicks priced by carriers
National carriers and comparison sites set the price of every quote search. An agency that bids there pays carrier prices for shoppers who often buy online anyway.
-
Searches for a carrier’s name
Many local insurance searches name a carrier, and most come from existing policyholders. Those clicks belong to the carrier, not to a new agency client.
-
Seasons by line of coverage
Renters peak with leases, Medicare supplement with fall enrollment, workers comp and business policies with September renewals. One flat budget misses all three.
-
Renewals that leave quietly
A rate increase at renewal sends people shopping. The agency that reviews the policy first keeps the household; the one that waits finds out at cancellation.
-
Licensing and carrier rules
Every ad names a licensed agency, and many carriers review their agents’ ads. Meta limits insurance ads to adults and restricts what they may ask for.
What people search for insurance, and when.
Monthly searches and estimated click costs in the Charlotte area, with the US for scale. The averages hide what the monthly curve shows: each line of coverage has its own season, and the cheapest line to win is rarely the one with the most searches.
| Search | US / mo | Est. click cost, Charlotte |
|---|---|---|
| car insurance quotes | 673,000 | $67.68 to $161.84 |
| renters insurance | 368,000 | $15.15 to $32.00 |
| cheap car insurance | 301,000 | $41.98 to $107.43 |
| homeowners insurance quote | 110,000 | $45.00 to $135.98 |
| home insurance quotes | 90,500 | $50.74 to $132.98 |
| medicare supplement plans | 90,500 | $4.04 to $13.65 |
| business insurance | 49,500 | $28.00 to $97.26 |
| workers compensation insurance | 27,100 | $25.26 to $122.30 |
| umbrella insurance | 27,100 | $3.03 to $13.18 |
| independent insurance agent | 12,100 | $10.49 to $35.34 |
- Every line has its own month
- "renters insurance" climbed from 2,400 Charlotte-area searches in November 2025 to 9,900 in May 2026 and 8,100 in September 2026, when leases turn over. "medicare supplement plans" peaked at 1,600 in October and November 2025, during fall enrollment. "workers compensation insurance" reached 880 in September 2026, against about 320 most months, as business policies renew.
- The first policy and the valuable one are priced apart
- "renters insurance" starts at $15.15 a click and "umbrella insurance" at $3.03, while "homeowners insurance quote" starts at $45 and "car insurance quotes" at $67.68. Renters are often next year’s homeowners with a car to insure, so the cheap first policy is the start of the household, not a small sale.
- Many insurance searches are for a carrier people already have
- One carrier’s name alone averaged 14,800 Charlotte-area searches a month, and another’s name with "near me" 1,300, against 260 for "insurance agency near me". That traffic is policyholders paying a bill or calling a claims line; an agency gains little by bidding on it.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.
A one-office independent agency, a captive agent with a carrier’s brand behind them and a commercial-lines agency need different plans. Four things set the starting point.
- Your book of business Personal lines households, Medicare clients or commercial accounts. The mix you write today and the mix you want next year set the first campaigns.
- Your timeline Search and the agency listing bring calls within weeks. Reviews, local pages and SEO build over quarters and lower what each household costs.
- Your carrier appointments Which carriers you write, and their rules on co-op funds and agent advertising, decide which lines you can promote and how the ads must read.
- Your existing households An agency with thousands of single-line clients often grows faster through cross-sell email than through new ads. We look at the book first.
Data sets the line-of-coverage mix and the monthly budget curve, ties every bound policy back to the search, ad or listing that started it, and shows which channels bring households that add a second policy and renew.
Independent agency
Personal lines households
Renters and bundle searches near the office, the agency listing and reviews, and email that turns every single-line client into a two-line household.
Captive agent
Inside the carrier’s brand rules
Local search and the listing under the carrier’s approved wording, life events on social, and referrals from the households already on the book.
Commercial lines
Business owners at renewal
Business, liability and workers comp searches timed to renewal season, LinkedIn by industry and company size, and a review offer before the policy renews.
If a Charlotte personal lines agency came to us, here is how we would start.
This is the plan we would pitch to a real client, built for a fictional Charlotte independent agency with real Charlotte search data. The agency, its phone number and its website are invented. Sample data shows the kind of results a campaign like this tracks; it is not a client result and not a promise.

How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent
The agency would not chase "car insurance quotes" at $67.68 a click or bid on carriers’ names. The account is split by line of coverage, so renters can run hard in May and September, and the bundle and business groups each keep their own budget, page and conversion value.
Renters, the first policy
The cheapest personal lines clicks in Charlotte, and the household that becomes a home and auto client later. Budget follows the lease seasons in May and September.
| Search | Charlotte area / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| renters insurance | 4,400 | $15.15 to $32.00 |
| renters insurance quote | 1,300 | $14.78 to $32.00 |
Home and auto together
The expensive searches, run only for people asking for both policies or naming Charlotte, and sent to a page that quotes the bundle, not a single line.
| Search | Charlotte area / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| homeowners insurance quote | 1,600 | $45.00 to $135.98 |
| home insurance quotes | 1,300 | $50.74 to $132.98 |
| car insurance charlotte nc | 880 | $42.56 to $150.00 |
| auto and home insurance bundle | 110 | $49.64 to $133.56 |
People who want an agent
Searchers asking for a person rather than a price. Low click costs and a high share of calls, so the ads show the phone number first.
| Search | Charlotte area / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| insurance broker near me | 390 | $9.10 to $43.16 |
| insurance agency near me | 260 | $11.05 to $36.49 |
| independent insurance agent | 210 | $10.49 to $35.34 |
| insurance agency charlotte nc | 110 | $8.77 to $38.80 |
Small business and workers comp
Owners buying coverage for a business, with the budget raised for the September renewal peak and a coverage review as the offer.
| Search | Charlotte area / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| business insurance | 720 | $28.00 to $97.26 |
| general liability insurance | 480 | $28.23 to $93.33 |
| workers compensation insurance | 320 | $25.26 to $122.30 |
| commercial auto insurance | 320 | $21.25 to $64.98 |
How our negative keyword governance protects the budget
- Carrier names, logins, bill pay and claims lines
- Agent licensing, exams and insurance jobs
- SR-22 and high-risk driver searches
- Health and Medicaid office searches
- Rental car and travel insurance
- Definitions and "what is" research
At $9 to $50 at the low end per click, our specialists exclude other carriers’ policyholders, people studying for a license and lines the agency does not write before launch, and review search terms every week so the budget reaches households choosing an agent.

The agency listing, not a lead marketplace
Google lists insurance agencies as a Local Services Ads category in California and Florida only, so in North Carolina the agency listing carries the map. Ours lists every line of coverage and every carrier type the agency writes, the agents with their photos and languages, Saturday hours if they exist, and a reply to every review. When someone searches "insurance agency near me", the complete listing with recent reviews is usually the one that gets the call.
The Instagram ad
Moves, new cars, weddings and new babies are when households need new coverage, and social reaches them before they search. Insurance ads on Meta reach adults only, and when a campaign runs in the financial products category, ZIP code targeting and lookalike audiences are off, so the creative names the life moment instead.
The email
The second policy is where an agency earns its margin. Each household gets one cross-sell step at a time, timed to the renewal date of the policy it holds elsewhere, and the emails stop when the household adds it.
One agent for your apartment and your car
Your renters policy is active and your proof of coverage is attached. Many of our clients also move their auto policy here, because several carriers price the two lower together. Reply with your current renewal date and we will compare it before it renews.
Compare my auto policyThe landing page the ads send people to
Each keyword group has its own page: renters see proof of coverage and move-in timing, bundle searches see this page, people looking for an agent see the team and the phone number, and business owners see a coverage review. Each asks for one thing.
Home and auto, compared together
A licensed Charlotte agent shops both policies across several carriers and shows you the bundle side by side with what you pay today.
- Home and auto quoted as one household
- Several carriers compared in one call
- A review before every renewal
- Licensed in North Carolina
- Independent agency
- Charlotte office
Other channels, only where they fit
FacebookThe same rules as Instagram
Insurance ads must follow Meta’s special ad category limits when they run in financial products and services: a 15-mile minimum radius, no ZIP codes and no lookalikes. The office radius and the life-moment creative do the targeting instead.
LinkedInOwners before the renewal date
Business insurance and workers comp reviews offered to owners and office managers by industry and company size, in the weeks before September renewals.
Microsoft AdsThe search plan on Bing

What each piece turns into, and how they hand off
- Search wins the first policy Renters, agent and business searches by season.
- The listing gets the call Every line, every agent and fresh reviews.
- Social meets the life moment Moves, cars and new families, inside the rules.
- Email adds the second line Cross-sell timed to each renewal date.
How our team tracks calls, bookings and revenue
- Calls and quote requests by lineCalls from ads and the listing, and online quote requests, recorded in Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, Meta and analytics by keyword group and line of coverage.
- Bound policies from the agency systemPolicies bound and their premium sent back from the agency management system as offline conversions, so bidding favors searches that bind.
- Policies per householdSecond and third policies added through email and agent follow-up, counted against the campaign that brought the household in.
- A monthly book reportSpend, quotes, bound households, policies per household, renewals kept and cost per bound household, compared with the same month last year.

Insurance agency marketing services, and which come first.

What has worked for insurance and financial brands.
Results the platforms published for an insurance agency and for financial brands. They are those companies’ published results, not ours; each story shows what we would take from it.
Insurance agency marketing from Charlotte.
We are based in Charlotte, where independent agencies compete with captive agents a few blocks away and with national carriers on every screen. That is why we plan around each office’s own area: the apartment corridors in South End and University City that drive renters searches each May and September, the growing family suburbs from Huntersville and Mooresville to Indian Trail and Fort Mill where households buy their first home and car together, and the small businesses that renew in the fall. We also work with insurance agencies nationwide; the lines of coverage and the ad rules travel, while the carriers, the licensing state and the competitors change.
Six growth leaks we fix in insurance agency ad accounts.
When we take over insurance agency accounts, these are the places we most often find households and budget leaking, and what we change first.
Paying carrier prices for price checks
Broad quote searches cost $40 to $70 at the low end, and many of those shoppers buy direct from a carrier. We move the budget to agent, bundle and renters searches and keep quote terms on a tight cap.
Counting quote requests as clients
A quote is not a bound policy. We send bound policies and premium from the agency system back to the ad platforms, so bidding finds households that buy.
One flat budget all year
Renters peak in May and September, Medicare in the fall and business renewals in September. We give each line its own budget and move it with the season.
Buying clicks from other carriers’ customers
People typing a carrier’s name are usually paying a bill or filing a claim. We exclude carrier names, logins and claims searches before launch.
Single-line households left alone
Most agencies have hundreds of clients with one policy and no plan to add a second. We build cross-sell email around each household’s renewal dates and count every line added.
Social ads set up the old way
Insurance ads with narrow age or ZIP targeting get limited or rejected on Meta. We build adult-only, radius-based audiences and let the life-moment creative find the households.
Questions insurance agency owners ask us.
What should an insurance agency spend on advertising?
It depends on the lines you write, how many single-line households are already on your book and what a household is worth in commission over the years it stays. We start from the searches around your office and their click costs, set a budget by line of coverage and season, and adjust it as bound policies show what each channel returns.
Should we bid on car insurance quote searches?
Rarely on the broad ones. In Charlotte they start at about $68 a click, priced by national carriers and comparison sites. Searches that ask for an agent, a bundle or renters coverage cost far less, and we raise quote bids only where bound policies prove they pay.
Can a captive agent run their own ads?
Usually yes, inside the carrier’s rules. Many carriers approve agent ad wording, limit how their name is used and offer co-op funds. We build the plan around those guidelines and keep a record of what the carrier approved.
Can we target Facebook ads by age or ZIP code?
Meta allows insurance ads to reach adults only, and campaigns in the financial products and services category cannot use ZIP codes, gender or lookalike audiences, with a 15-mile minimum radius. We plan the offer and creative around life moments, so the ads still reach the households most likely to need coverage.
Do you work with agencies outside Charlotte?
Yes. We are based in Charlotte and work with insurance agencies nationwide. The method is the same everywhere; the licensing state, the carriers you write and the local search demand change.
Do you handle Medicare and life insurance marketing?
Yes, as lines inside a wider agency plan. Medicare supplement searches peak during fall enrollment and carry their own federal marketing rules, so those campaigns get their own calendar, wording review and landing pages.
