Banks and credit unions

Bank advertising that opens primary accounts, not just rate shoppers

Most bank searches come from people looking for a bank they already use, and the cheapest clicks come from savers who move money for the next rate. We plan search, the branch listings, social ads inside the financial ad rules and onboarding email around the accounts that stay, and we count funded accounts and loans, not clicks.

  • 40,500Charlotte-area searches a month for one national bank’s name plus "near me", against 12,100 for "banks near me"
  • $1.33low end of the estimated click cost for "cd rates" in Charlotte, against $28 for "business checking account"
  • 18,100Charlotte-area searches for "high yield savings account" in January 2026, against 9,900 in September 2026
  • 1,300Charlotte-area searches a month for "credit union charlotte nc", from $3.68 a click at the low end

The short answer

What should bank advertising be accountable for?

Bank advertising should be accountable for funded accounts that become a household’s main bank, and for the loans and deposits that follow, at a cost the relationship can carry.

An application is not a customer, and a teaser-rate deposit is not a relationship. In the bank and credit union accounts we review, budget usually leaks to rate shoppers who leave when the promotion ends, to brand searches for other banks, and to reporting that stops at the form. We plan bank search ads, branch pages and SEO for community banks, Facebook and Instagram ads and onboarding email as one system, written to the Google financial products policy and your compliance review, and we measure cost per funded account and per closed loan.

What banks and credit unions need their marketing to solve.

These are the pressures we see at community banks and credit unions. They are why a bank plan is built differently from an advisor’s or an insurance agency’s.

  • The primary checking account

Direct deposit and bill pay are what make a household stay. A savings account opened for a rate is often gone when the rate is.

  • Getting past the big brand names

Most local bank searches name a national bank. A community bank wins on the searches that do not, and on the map near its branches.

  • Ad rules that change the targeting

Financial ads on Meta cannot target by age, gender or ZIP code. Audiences, creative and branch radius have to do that work instead.

  • Every branch found on the map

Each branch needs its own listing, hours, services and reviews, because the nearest branch is still how many people choose.

  • Deposits, loans and business banking

Each product has its own searchers, season and click cost. One budget for all of them lets the cheapest clicks crowd out the valuable ones.

  • The second product in the first 90 days

A new member who adds a card, an auto loan or a business account stays far longer. Onboarding email does that work at no click cost.

Most bank searches are for a bank people already have
The two most-searched national bank names with "near me" averaged 40,500 and 33,100 Charlotte-area searches a month, against 12,100 for "banks near me" and 2,900 for "credit union near me". That traffic is existing customers finding a branch or an ATM. A community bank gains little by bidding on it; the open searches and the map are where new households choose.
Savers search by the calendar, movers by the season
"high yield savings account" reached 18,100 Charlotte-area searches in January, February and July 2026, and fell to 9,900 in November 2025 and September 2026. "banks near me" held at 9,900 a month from November 2025 to March 2026, then jumped to 18,100 in May 2026, when households move and switch banks.
Deposits cost little, relationships cost more
"cd rates" starts at $1.33 a click and "money market account" at $1.47, while "open checking account" starts at $14.04, "home equity loan" at $15.64 and "business checking account" at $28. Rate shoppers are cheap to reach and quick to leave; checking, home equity and business accounts are where a lasting relationship starts, and they are priced that way.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.

A one-branch community bank, a growing credit union and a regional bank with business lending need different plans. Four things set the starting point.

  • Your goals New checking households, core deposits, home equity and auto loans, or business accounts. Each starts with a different campaign, offer and landing page.
  • Your timeline Search and the branch listings bring applications within weeks. Branch pages, SEO and reviews build over quarters and lower what each account costs.
  • Your funding needs A bank that needs deposits this quarter and one that needs loan growth spend very differently. The balance sheet sets which products get the budget.
  • Your compliance review Rate disclosures, Member FDIC or NCUA wording, fair lending and the ad platforms’ financial rules shape every ad. We build review time into the calendar.

Data sets the product mix and the monthly budget curve, ties every funded account and closed loan back to the search, ad or branch page that started it, and shows which channels bring households that stay.

  • Community bank

Win primary households near the branches

Local search on open bank and checking terms, a listing and page for every branch, and onboarding email that adds the second product.

  • Credit union

Grow members inside the field of membership

Search and social limited to the counties and employers members come from, auto and home equity loans in their seasons, and member referral offers.

  • Business banking

    Operating accounts and commercial loans

Business checking and lending searches, LinkedIn for owners and finance leads, and a banker’s calendar on every landing page.

If a Charlotte community bank came to us, here is how we would start.

This is the plan we would pitch to a real client, built for a fictional Charlotte community bank with real Charlotte search data. The bank, its phone number and its website are invented. Sample data shows the kind of results a campaign like this tracks; it is not a client result and not a promise.

How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent

The bank would not bid on other banks’ names or chase national savings rates against online banks. The account is split by product, so each gets its own budget, landing page and conversion value, and the cheap deposit clicks cannot take the budget from checking and business accounts.

A local bank

People choosing a bank, not finding their own. Run only within a few miles of the branches, with checking as the offer, because checking is what makes a household stay.

SearchCharlotte area / moEst. click cost
banks near me12,100$7.55 to $30.00
banks in charlotte nc1,300$5.02 to $26.79
checking account online260$15.25 to $53.51
open checking account110$14.04 to $46.05

Savings and CDs

The cheapest clicks in the account, and the quickest to leave. Kept on a capped budget, opened when the bank needs deposits, and followed by a checking offer for every new saver.

SearchCharlotte area / moEst. click cost
cd rates1,600$1.33 to $8.09
best cd rates1,000$1.64 to $11.57
money market account1,000$1.47 to $9.61
high yield cd480$1.89 to $10.19

Home equity

Homeowners with equity are often the bank’s most valuable households. Larger balances justify higher clicks, sent to a page with a local loan officer’s calendar.

home equity line of credit rates1,300$5.98 to $22.40
home equity loan1,000$15.64 to $60.19

Business banking

The most expensive clicks and the deepest relationships: an operating account brings payroll, deposits and lending. Measured by accounts funded, not forms.

SearchCharlotte area / moEst. click cost

How our negative keyword governance protects the budget

  • Other banks’ names, logins and routing numbers
  • ATM, branch hours and customer service searches
  • Bank jobs, careers and teller training
  • Bonus-only and churning searches
  • Payday, title and bad-credit loans
  • Prepaid cards and check cashing

At $5 to $28 at the low end per click, our specialists exclude other banks’ customers looking for a login or a branch, job seekers and bonus hunters before launch, and review search terms every week so the budget reaches households choosing a new bank.

How we write and test the Google search ads

A Google listing for every branch

Banks are not a Local Services Ads category, so the branch listings carry the map. Each branch gets its own Google Business Profile with its own hours, drive-through and ATM details, services and photos, a link to that branch’s page, and a reply to every review. When someone searches "banks near me", the nearest well-kept listing is often the one they call.

The Facebook ad

People who are not searching for a bank yet still see Facebook every day. The ads run inside Meta’s financial category, so the audience is everyone within the branch radius, and the creative speaks to the people who switch: new arrivals, new parents and new business owners.

Bank advertising from Charlotte, the banking city.

We are based in Charlotte, where some of the largest banks in the country are headquartered and community banks and credit unions compete for the same households a few blocks away. That competition is why we plan around branches: the neighborhoods and commutes each branch serves, from Uptown and South End to Huntersville, Matthews and Concord, and the open searches the national brands do not own. We also work with banks and credit unions nationwide; the products and the ad rules are the same, while the competitors and the field of membership change.

Six growth leaks we fix in bank and credit union ad accounts.

When we take over bank and credit union accounts, these are the places we most often find accounts and budget leaking, and what we change first.

  1. Counting applications as customers

A started application is not a funded account. We send funded accounts, balances and closed loans back to the ad platforms, so bidding finds households that actually open and use the account.

  2. Paying for rate shoppers

CD and savings clicks are cheap, and many of those savers move the money when the rate ends. We cap deposit campaigns to the bank’s funding needs and follow every new saver with a checking offer.

  3. One campaign for every product

When checking, savings, home equity and business banking share a budget, the cheapest clicks win it. We split the account by product, each with its own budget, page and conversion value.

  4. Targeting that breaks the ad rules

Financial ads on Facebook and Instagram cannot target by age, gender or ZIP code, and campaigns set up the old way get rejected or limited. We build audiences, radius and creative for the financial category from the start.

  5. Branch listings left on autopilot

Wrong holiday hours, missing services and unanswered reviews cost the map. We keep every branch listing complete and current, and reply to every review.

  6. Onboarding that ends at the welcome email

A new account without direct deposit rarely becomes the main account. We build onboarding around direct deposit, bill pay and the second product, and measure how many households take each step.

Questions bank and credit union marketers ask us.

What should a community bank spend on advertising?

It depends on the products the bank needs to grow, how many branches it has and what a new household brings in deposits and loans. We start from the searches around your branches and their click costs, set a budget by product, and adjust it as funded accounts and closed loans show what each channel returns.

Should we advertise our rates?

Sometimes, with care. Rates bring the cheapest clicks, but rate shoppers are the quickest to leave, and rate ads need the disclosures your compliance team requires. We use rate offers when the bank needs deposits, and lead with checking and service when it needs households.

Can we target Facebook ads by age or ZIP code?

No. In the US, Meta’s financial products and services category does not allow age, gender or ZIP code targeting, and locations need at least a 15-mile radius. We plan audiences, creative and offers inside those rules, so the ads still reach the people most likely to switch.

Do you work with credit unions?

Yes. As a credit union marketing agency, we build credit union advertising around your field of membership so ads, pages and offers fit who can join. We plan campaigns around the counties, employers and groups your charter covers, and we measure new members and their first loans.

Do you work with banks outside Charlotte?

Yes. We are based in Charlotte and work with banks and credit unions nationwide. The method is the same everywhere; the competitors, the branches and the local search demand change.

How do you handle compliance review?

We build it into the calendar. Ads, pages and emails go to your compliance team before launch, with the Member FDIC or NCUA wording, rate disclosures and lending notices in place, and we keep a record of what was approved.
