Used car dealers

Used car dealer marketing that turns your lot faster

Used car shoppers in the Charlotte area search by vehicle, by budget and by credit, and each of those searches costs a different amount. We plan search, vehicle ads, Facebook ads, your Google listing, email and your site around the units on your lot and the days each one has sat, inside the credit ad rules, and we count appointments, approvals and units sold.

The short answer

What should used car dealer marketing do for an independent lot?

Used car dealer marketing has to sell every unit before it ages, bring in buyers whose credit decides the deal, and keep enough good trade-ins coming to restock the lot.

Most independent dealer accounts we audit run one campaign on "used cars near me" and send every click to the inventory page. The search data shows three different buyers: one shopping a vehicle type, one shopping a price, and one shopping for financing. We split the account the same way, feed every unit into Google vehicle ads and Facebook inventory ads, shift budget toward the units that have sat longest, and run financing ads inside the credit category rules on Meta and the Google personalized advertising policy. Then we measure units sold and days on the lot, not form fills.

What used car dealers need their marketing to solve.

An independent lot has no factory program, no allocation and no co-op money. Every unit is a one-off bought with the store’s own cash. These are the pressures we plan around in used car accounts.

  • Every day on the lot costs money

Floor plan interest, depreciation and reconditioning all keep running while a unit waits. The marketing has to know which units are aging and push them first.

  • Credit decides many deals

Plenty of used car buyers arrive with thin or damaged credit. Financing ads have to reach them while staying inside the credit ad rules on each platform.

  • Inventory has to be bought, not ordered

Good trade-ins and private-party buys restock the lot more cheaply than auctions. Sourcing cars is a marketing job too.

  • Shoppers start on listing sites

Many buyers compare the same unit on several listing sites before they call. The store’s own site and Google listing have to win the second look.

  • Trust in a vehicle with a past

A used car buyer worries about history, condition and surprises after the sale. Reports, real photos and reviews do more than any slogan.

  • Proof tied to units sold

Owners want cost per vehicle sold and turn rate by unit. Calls, credit applications and chats need to reach the CRM and come back matched to deals.

What used car buyers search before they visit a lot.

Monthly searches and estimated click costs for the searches an independent used car store competes for. They split into vehicle, budget, lot and financing searches, and the notes read the monthly curve.

"Buy here pay here" reached 9,900 Charlotte-area searches in both February and March 2026, then fell to 5,400 from May through July. "Buy here pay here near me" followed the same line, from 5,400 in February and March to 3,600 the rest of spring. Financing budgets belong in late winter, not spread flat across the year.
Vehicle clicks cost a third of credit clicks
A click on "used trucks for sale near me" costs an estimated $0.73 to $3.45 in Charlotte and "used cars under 10000" $0.50 to $2.46, while "buy here pay here near me" runs $2.52 to $13.66. The cheapest buyers to reach are the ones shopping a vehicle type or a price.
Buying cars costs more than selling them
"Sell my car" costs an estimated $9.13 to $23.32 a click in Charlotte, several times any retail search. Paid acquisition ads rarely pay back, so we source cars through trade-in offers on the store’s own site and email instead.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.

A cash-and-carry lot, a buy here pay here store and a large independent with a reconditioning shop need different plans. Four things decide where a used car plan starts.

  • Your goals Turn aging units, grow financed deals, raise average gross or buy more cars from the public. Each starts in a different campaign.
  • Your inventory mix Trucks, family SUVs, budget commuters or late-model certified units each match different searches and different seasons.
  • Your financing In-house notes, outside lenders or cash only change who we target, which ad rules apply and what a lead is worth.
  • Your competition Franchise used departments, national used car chains and the lots on your own road all bid for the same shoppers.

Data sets the budget by unit and age, checks each channel against sold units in the CRM, and shows when to move money from vehicle searches to financing, or from retail to sourcing.

  • Cash and outside-lender lot

Sell each unit before it ages

Vehicle and budget searches, vehicle ads from the feed, Facebook inventory ads in the market area and a Google listing full of real photos and reviews.

  • Buy here pay here store

Win credit-challenged buyers inside the rules

Financing campaigns built in the credit ad category, budgets that peak in February and March, fast credit application follow-up and payment-reminder email for current customers.

  • Large independent with a reconditioning shop

    Grow volume and sourcing together

Model campaigns for core units, aging-unit pushes from the feed, trade-in offers on the site and service reminders that bring buyers back.

If a used car dealer came to us, here is how we would start.

This is the pitch we would give a real client, built for a fictional Charlotte independent used car store with outside lender financing, using real Charlotte search data. The store, its phone number and its website are invented. Sample data shows the kind of results a campaign like this tracks; it is not a client result and not a promise.

How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent

We would split the account by what the buyer is shopping: a vehicle type, a lot nearby, a price or financing. Each group gets its own budget, landing page and bid, and money moves toward the units that have sat longest.

Vehicle type and model

The cheapest buyers to reach. Each group lands on the matching units in stock, sorted by days on the lot, so aging units get seen first.

Lot and dealer searches

Buyers ready to visit a lot nearby. Ads lead with real stock, hours and the store’s location, because the next lot is down the road.

Buyers shopping a price, not a model. They land on units under the price they searched, and the page answers the payment question before they call.

How our negative keyword governance protects the budget

  • Listing site and national chain names
  • Junk car and scrap searches
  • Rentals and car share
  • Parts, salvage and auctions
  • New car and lease searches
  • Jobs at car lots

Used car searches pull in people looking for a listing site by name, scrap buyers, renters and auction hunters. Our specialists load these exclusions before launch and read the search terms every week, so the budget stays on retail buyers.

How we write and test the Google search ads

Each intent group gets message-matched ad copy engineered by our specialists to qualify buyers before the click and lift expected click-through rate.

The Google listing, the map and the inventory feed

Buyers deciding between lots read the map, the photos and the latest reviews before they drive over. The listing would carry lot hours, photos of real units and the building, and replies to every review. The inventory feed does double duty: Google vehicle ads show each unit with its photo, mileage and price to shoppers searching that vehicle, and Facebook inventory ads show the same units to shoppers in the market area. Financing ads stay out of the feed and run in their own credit category campaigns.

  • Leads by unit and sourceCalls, chats, forms and credit applications recorded with the vehicle and campaign that produced them, and duplicates merged in the CRM.
  • Sold units sent backDeals from the CRM and dealer management system are matched to their first ad click and sent back to Google and Meta, so bidding learns which units and searches sell.

Used car dealer marketing in Charlotte, where lots line every main road.

We are based in Charlotte, where independent lots cluster along the main commercial roads and buyers drive across county and state lines for the right truck at the right payment. We plan used car campaigns around the distance your buyers actually travel, from the dense lot corridors inside the city to the fast-growing towns around it. We also work with independent and buy here pay here dealers nationwide, with each plan built on that market’s own vehicle and financing searches.

Six profit leaks we fix in used car dealer accounts.

When we take over used car accounts, these are the places we most often find budget leaking away from sold units, and what we change first.

  1. Every click sent to the full inventory page

A buyer who searched used trucks and lands on every car on the lot leaves. We send each group to the matching units, sorted so aging units show first.

  2. Budget spread evenly across the lot

Fresh units sell themselves; the ones past their target age cost money every day. We push budget toward aging units in the feed and pull it back once they sell.

  3. Financing ads outside the credit rules

Credit offers run as ordinary ads with age or ZIP code targeting get rejected or limited. We build them in the credit ad category from the start, so they keep running.

  4. A flat financing budget all year

Buy here pay here searches in Charlotte run about 80% higher in February and March than in early summer. We weight financing budget to those weeks.

  5. Buying cars with expensive clicks

"Sell my car" clicks cost several times a retail click. We source inventory through trade-in offers to past buyers and leads, at a fraction of that cost.

  6. No contact after the sale

Many lots never market to a buyer again. We set trade-in, service and referral emails from the sale date, so past buyers come back and bring their next car.

Questions used car dealers ask us.

Can you advertise financing for buyers with bad credit?

Yes, inside the rules. Credit ads on Meta run in the special ad category for financial products, and Google limits how credit ads can be targeted in the US. We build financing campaigns that way from the start, and any ad that states a payment or down payment carries the full credit terms.

Should we still list on the big listing sites?

Usually, yes. Many buyers compare units there first. We treat those listings as one channel, track which units they sell, and make sure the store’s own site and Google listing win the buyer’s second look.

Can ads help us move units that have sat too long?

Yes. With the inventory feed connected, each unit’s age decides its budget, so aging units get more exposure in vehicle ads and Facebook inventory ads until they sell.

Is it worth paying for "sell my car" searches?

Rarely at Charlotte click costs. Trade-in offers to past buyers and unsold leads source cars far more cheaply, and the same email often starts the next sale.

How fast do leads and sales start?

Search and vehicle ads usually bring calls and credit applications in the first weeks. Cost per sold unit settles over the first few months, once enough deals come back from the CRM to match against clicks.

Do you work with used car dealers outside Charlotte?

Yes. We are based in Charlotte and work with independent and buy here pay here dealers across the US. The method is the same; the vehicle mix, financing demand and click costs change with each market.
