Meta Ads success story · Car manufacturer

How Mazda earned a 3.5X return on ad spend by optimizing Meta ads for real car sales.

During its More to Move You sales event, Mazda Motor of America trained its Facebook and Instagram ads on actual dealership sales, not website clicks. The cost of each extra car sold fell by 64%.

The challenge.

Mazda Motor of America, the North American arm of Mazda, sells its full lineup through dealerships across the country. Cars are bought on the lot, not in a shopping cart, so ads optimized for website activity tend to reward people who browse rather than people who buy.

For its month-long More to Move You sales event, Mazda wanted two things from Facebook and Instagram: more people visiting dealerships and more vehicles sold. It also wanted a clearer view of what was driving results at the dealership level.

What they did.

Omnichannel ads · Dealer sales data sent to Meta · Photo and video ads

Real sales in the loop
An automotive data partner supplied daily, industry-wide vehicle sales data, which was sent securely to Meta. The ads could then be matched to cars actually sold, not just visits to the website.
One campaign, web and showroom
Omnichannel ads optimized a single campaign for online engagement and dealership sales together.
The lineup plus the offer
Photo and video ads showed a range of vehicles and the event incentives, with a Shop now button that took people to the website to find their nearest dealer.
AI finds the buyers
AI-driven audiences looked beyond standard targeting to find adults likely to be in the market, while automatic placements and budget moved spend to the best-performing ads in real time.

Why it worked.

Our read on the decisions behind the numbers, and what any business can take from them.

Optimize for the real outcome
When the system learns from cars sold rather than clicks, it stops chasing browsers and starts finding buyers. That is where the 64% drop in cost per incremental sale comes from.
Incremental is the honest number
The lift test counted only the sales that would not have happened without the ads. A 3.5X return on that basis is real money, not credit taken for loyal customers.
A deadline creates urgency
A defined event with real incentives gives in-market shoppers a reason to act now, and gives the ads a clear story to tell.
Budget follows the winners
Automatic budget moved spend every day toward the ads and audiences that were selling cars, instead of waiting for a monthly review.

How we would run this play for your business.

You do not need a national budget to use the same ideas. This is how Overtop Media Digital Marketing puts them to work in our meta ads management.

Bring in your sales data
For dealers, sold units from your DMS or CRM; for any business, closed deals. We connect it securely so your ads learn from revenue. Our guide to offline conversion tracking covers the setup.
Plan around your sales calendar
Events, model-year changes, holidays and slow months each get their own plan, budget and creative.
Report by location
If you have more than one rooftop or store, you see results by location, so budget goes where it sells.
Search and social together
People who see a vehicle on Instagram search for it next. Our Google Ads team makes sure your dealership is the one they find.

Who this play fits.

You do not have to be a car manufacturer to use the same approach. It is a strong fit for:

  • Car dealers and dealer groups
  • Boat, RV and powersports dealers
  • Franchise brands running promotions
  • Furniture and mattress sales events
  • Home builders with model homes
  • Any business with a big sales event
