The challenge.
Clay Cooley Automotive Group runs a network of dealerships covering many brands across the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Its Facebook ads already worked the way most dealers run them: a shopper taps the ad, sends a message in Messenger, and the lead is passed to the sales team to follow up by phone or email.
That hand-off was the weak point. Many leads were not answered fast enough, follow-up was uneven, and interested buyers slipped away between the ad and the showroom. The ads also only opened Messenger, so shoppers who spend their time on Instagram had one more step between them and a conversation.
What they did.
Ads that open a chat in Messenger or Instagram · Lead-focused delivery
- One ad, two inboxes
- Instead of separate campaigns, a single campaign ran ads that open a chat in Messenger or Instagram Direct. Each shopper was sent to the app they use most, without the dealership paying for a second campaign.
- Aimed at real leads
- The campaign was optimized for leads rather than clicks, so Meta looked for people likely to become serious buyers at a lower cost, not anyone who might tap an ad.
- Broad audience, strong hooks
- There were no age or demographic limits. Creative with hooks written for car buyers did the targeting, letting the system find people ready to buy.
- A person answers every chat
- Every message got a personal reply, the kind of business messaging customers expect. The rep answered questions, gathered details and booked an appointment, then passed the customer to the dealership, which sent reminders and follow-up messages.
- A fair test
- The new campaign ran side by side with the usual Messenger-only campaign at the same budget, so the difference came from the approach, not from more money.
Why it worked.
Our read on the decisions behind the numbers, and what any business can take from them.
- Speed sells cars
- A shopper who sends a message is warm for minutes, not days. Answering inside the chat removed the slow relay to phone and email, which is where these leads had been going cold.
- People keep their habits
- Some shoppers live in Instagram, others in Messenger. Letting each one use their own app took away friction and reached buyers the Messenger-only ads were missing.
- One campaign learns faster
- Combining both destinations gave the system one budget and more results to learn from. It also made budgeting and reporting simpler for the dealership.
- Judged on cars, not clicks
- The test was scored on appointments and units sold. That is the number a dealer principal cares about, and the one that proves the ads paid for themselves.
How we would run this play for your business.
You do not need a national budget to use the same ideas. This is how Overtop Media Digital Marketing puts them to work in our meta ads management.
- Script the conversation
- We write the opening questions, instant replies and hand-off so a chat becomes a booked appointment, not a thread that trails off.
- Answer fast, day and night
- Instant replies cover after-hours messages, and warm conversations are routed to your team the moment a customer is ready to talk.
- Connect chats to sales
- We tie conversations to your CRM, so you see which ads produce showroom visits and closed deals, and Meta learns to find more of those buyers.
- Catch the follow-up search
- Shoppers who chat with you often search your name next. Our Google Ads management makes sure you are the business they find.
Who this play fits.
You do not have to be a car dealership group to use the same approach. It is a strong fit for:
- Car dealers and repair shops
- Home services that quote jobs
- Dental, medical and med spa practices
- Real estate agents and builders
- Gyms and fitness studios
- Any business where a quick question comes before the sale
