Tech startups
A startup marketing agency that finds traction before the runway runs out
New categories form in months, not years. The words buyers use change, the cheap clicks do not last, and every month of budget has to teach you something. We plan search, social, LinkedIn and email around that, and judge every channel by paying customers and what each one cost.
- 83xjump in US searches for "ai receptionist": 5,400 a month to June 2026, 450,000 in August
- $12.78low end of the estimated click cost for "ai receptionist", against $36.82 for "answering service"
- 96%drop in "receptionist services" searches, from 2,900 in October 2025 to 110 in July 2026, US
- 50Charlotte-area searches a month for "ai receptionist": a startup’s market is national from day one
The short answer
What should a startup marketing agency deliver in the first six months?
A startup marketing agency should deliver proof of which buyers, messages and channels bring paying customers at a cost the business can live with, while there is still runway to act on it.
Early startup budgets rarely fail from spending too little. In the startup accounts we review, money leaks in three places: broad clicks bought before anyone knows which buyer pays, a single message never tested against another, and sign-ups counted as success while nobody checks who became a customer. As a digital marketing agency for startups, we plan search ads, SEO for startups through our SEO team, social ads, LinkedIn Ads and email as one test plan, with paying customers sent back to the platforms through offline conversion imports so bidding learns who buys.
What tech startups need their marketing to solve.
These are the pressures we see in seed and early-stage startup accounts. A startup is not a smaller SaaS company or a smaller enterprise vendor: the category, the message and the buyer are all still being proven.
-
A category that is still forming
When a product type is new, buyers do not know its name yet. They search the problem or the old solution, and the new name can take over within a single season.
-
Learning on a runway clock
Every month of budget has to answer a question: which buyer, which message, which channel. Spending without a question to answer burns runway and teaches nothing.
-
The first buyer who really pays
Early sign-ups come from curious people, other founders and tool collectors. The plan has to find the segment that pays and stays, then spend there.
-
Numbers the next round will ask for
Investors ask about customer acquisition cost, payback and growth by month. Tracking set up on day one turns marketing spend into evidence for the next raise.
-
A cheap window before rivals arrive
New category searches start out cheaper than the established ones. Once funded competitors pile in, click costs rise. Owning the pages and the searches early is worth more than it looks.
-
A brand nobody has heard of
Buyers compare a new name with the services they already trust. A clear story, proof and a low-risk first step have to do the work a known brand does for free.
What buyers search while a new category forms.
US monthly searches and estimated click costs for one emerging category, AI phone answering for businesses, set against the older answering service searches it is replacing. The yearly averages hide how fast this moved, so the notes read the monthly curve.
| Search | Charlotte area / mo | Est. click cost, US |
|---|---|---|
| ai receptionist | 50 | $12.78 to $45.03 |
| ai voice agent | 10 | $12.49 to $40.00 |
| ai answering service | 20 | $13.15 to $54.52 |
| answering service | 20 | $36.82 to $179.76 |
| virtual receptionist | 20 | $21.78 to $84.34 |
| ai phone answering service | 10 | $14.48 to $58.80 |
| phone answering service | 10 | $33.50 to $159.13 |
| virtual receptionist services | 20 | $26.38 to $111.13 |
| after hours answering service | 10 | $26.36 to $146.03 |
| answering service for small business | 10 | $46.09 to $144.78 |
- The new name took over in one summer
- "ai receptionist" held at 5,400 to 6,600 US searches a month from October 2025 to June 2026, then reached 90,500 in July, 450,000 in August and 301,000 in September 2026. "ai phone answering service" went from 720 to 14,800 in the same weeks, and "ai answering service" from 1,600 to 18,100. A yearly average of 74,000 describes a month that never happened.
- The old words faded at the same time
- "receptionist services" fell from 2,900 searches in October 2025 to 110 in July 2026. "virtual receptionist" went from 8,100 to 1,900 and "phone answering service" from 6,600 to 1,300. Buyers did not stop needing calls answered; they changed the words they use to look for it.
- New category clicks start cheaper
- The low end of the click cost for "ai receptionist" is $12.78, about a third of "answering service" at $36.82 and under a third of "answering service for small business" at $46.09. That gap is the early window: it narrows as funded rivals learn the new words.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.
A pre-seed company looking for its first ten customers and a Series A company scaling a channel that already works need different plans. Four things decide where a startup plan starts.
- Your goals First paying customers, proof for an investor update, a lower cost per customer, or a new segment. Each starts with a different test and a different landing page.
- Your runway Months of runway set how many tests fit before the next raise. Search answers fastest; SEO and content pay off on a longer clock and start where the paid clicks cost the most.
- Your price and payback What a customer pays in the first year sets what one can cost. A low monthly price leans on search, referrals and email; a higher contract can carry LinkedIn and a sales call.
- Your category In a new category we bid on the old words and the new ones side by side; in a crowded one we look for the segment the leaders ignore.
Data decides which test runs next, which segment gets the budget and when a channel has earned more money, and turns every month of spend into a number the founders and investors can trust.
Pre-seed and seed
Find the buyer who pays
Small, fast tests across two or three channels, one message per test, and a landing page per segment, judged by paying customers and not sign-ups.
After the first raise
Scale what already works
More budget behind the channel and segment that proved out, SEO for startups on the searches that cost the most, and lifecycle email to lift retention.
New category creators
Own the new words early
Pages and ads for both the old vocabulary and the new name, watched month by month as buyers switch from one to the other.
If a tech startup came to us, here is how we would start.
This is the pitch we would give a real client, built for a fictional Charlotte startup with real US search data. The company, its phone number and its website are invented. Sample data shows the kind of results a campaign like this tracks; it is not a client result and not a promise.
Callowmere
- AI phone answering for home service companies
- Books jobs and texts back missed calls
- Seed-stage, monthly plans with a free trial
How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent
We would split the account by the words buyers use for the problem, old and new. Each group gets its own budget, its own landing page and its own conversion value, so spend can follow the switch from one vocabulary to the other.
The new category
Buyers who already use the new name. The cheapest qualified clicks in the plan while the category is young; budget follows the monthly curve, not the yearly average.
| Search | US / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| ai receptionist | 74,000 | $12.78 to $45.03 |
| ai answering service | 4,400 | $13.15 to $54.52 |
| ai phone answering service | 2,900 | $14.48 to $58.80 |
| ai phone answering | 390 | $13.65 to $48.23 |
The old words
Owners still searching for a human answering service. Costlier clicks, sent to a page that compares an AI receptionist with a live service on price, hours and missed calls.
| Search | US / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| answering service | 3,600 | $36.82 to $179.76 |
| virtual receptionist | 2,900 | $21.78 to $84.34 |
| virtual receptionist services | 1,900 | $26.38 to $111.13 |
| after hours answering service | 1,000 | $26.36 to $146.03 |
Trades with a missed-call problem
The segment Callowmere is built for. Small volume, the closest fit, and the first group to prove whether the product sells to the buyer it was designed around.
| Search | US / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| plumbing answering service | 480 | $21.00 to $168.30 |
| missed call text back | 390 | $7.45 to $24.65 |
Small business comparison shoppers
Owners comparing options before they choose. The most expensive clicks in the plan, capped until the comparison page shows it turns visitors into trials.
| Search | US / mo | Est. click cost |
|---|---|---|
| best answering service for small business | 880 | $41.43 to $116.77 |

How our negative keyword governance protects the budget
- Developers building their own voice agents
- Receptionist jobs and staffing searches
- Medical and legal answering services outside the target market
- Free phone apps and personal voicemail
- Call center software for large companies
- Existing customer login and support searches
In a category this new, a large share of the searches come from builders, job seekers and curious readers. Our specialists exclude them before launch and review search terms every week, because at $12 to $46 at the low end per click a few days of the wrong traffic can use up a month of a seed budget.
How we write and test the Google search ads
Each intent group gets message-matched ad copy engineered by our specialists to qualify buyers before the click and lift expected click-through rate.

The Facebook ad
Trade business owners are on Facebook, and most have not heard the new category name yet. These ads test two or three messages against each other, reach owners of home service companies, and retarget visitors who heard a sample call.
The email
For a new product, the first real call is the moment of proof. Each email pushes that one step, stops once the account takes it, and puts a founder on the phone with trials that stall.
Let it answer one afternoon of calls
Your trial is set up. The owners who keep Callowmere forward their business line for a few hours in the first week and see the jobs it books while they work. It takes two minutes from your phone settings. Want us to walk you through it? Reply and one of the founders will call you.

Each keyword group has its own page: the new-name searches see this trial page, the old-word searches see a comparison with a live answering service, and trades see a page for their own trade. Each page asks for one thing.

What each piece turns into, and how they hand off
- Search catches both vocabularies The new name and the old words, side by side.
- Social tests the message Two or three angles, one winner gets the budget.
- Trial email drives the first call One step at a time, a founder on stalled trials.
- Billing data teaches the bidding Paying customers sent back to every platform.
How our team tracks calls, bookings and revenue
- Trials and demo requestsSign-ups and demo bookings recorded in Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, LinkedIn, Meta and analytics, by keyword group, message and landing page.
- The first real callThe first forwarded call and the first booked job, sent back as conversions so bidding favors trials that use the product.
- Paying customers from billingFirst payments and plan values tied to the click that started the trial, so the budget follows revenue rather than sign-ups.
- A monthly board-ready reportSpend, trials, paying customers, cost per customer and payback by channel and segment, in the shape an investor update needs.

Startup marketing services, and which come first.
The four core services carry most early startup plans. The other channels join once a test shows the buyer is there; a seed-stage company rarely needs every channel at once.

What has worked for fast-growing tech companies.
Results the ad platforms published for young, fast-growing software companies. They are those companies’ published results, not ours; each story shows what we would take from it.
Startup marketing from Charlotte, for markets everywhere.
We are based in Charlotte, where startups grow out of uptown accelerators, South End offices and University Research Park, and most of our startup work is national because that is where a young company finds enough buyers: about 50 Charlotte-area searches a month for "ai receptionist", against tens of thousands across the US. Campaigns follow the markets the product can serve and the hours the founders can cover. We work with startups nationwide, from the Charlotte region to anywhere in the US.
Six growth leaks we fix in startup ad accounts.
When we take over early-stage startup accounts, these are the places we most often find runway leaking, and what we change first.
Bidding only on the words the founders use
Founders name their category in their own words; buyers often search the old solution. We bid on both vocabularies, give each its own page, and move budget as the search data shows buyers switching.
Planning from yearly averages
A yearly average of 74,000 searches hid months of 5,400 and a month of 450,000. In a forming category we read the monthly curve and reset budgets every month, not every year.
Counting sign-ups as traction
Early sign-ups are full of other founders and tool collectors. We send the first real use and the first payment back to Google, Microsoft, LinkedIn and Meta, so bidding works for paying customers.
Running every channel at once
A thin budget spread over six channels never gets enough data in any of them. We test two or three, give each a clear question and a deadline, and move money to the one that answers it.
One message, never tested
A new brand rarely gets its pitch right the first time. We run two or three angles against each other in social ads and on landing pages, and let paying customers, not opinions, pick the winner.
Leaving SEO until after the next raise
The new category words are cheapest to rank for before rivals publish. We start SEO on the searches that cost the most per click, so the organic work pays for itself sooner.
Questions startup founders ask us.
When should a startup hire a marketing agency?
Once the product works for a first group of customers and the founders need to know which buyers and channels can grow it. Before that, most money is better spent on the product; after it, a focused test plan saves months of guessing.
What should a seed-stage startup spend on ads?
It depends on your runway, what a customer pays in the first year and how fast you need answers. We size the budget to run a few clear tests to a result each month, rather than spreading it thin across every channel.
Our category is new. Is there any search demand?
Usually more than founders expect, under different words. Buyers search the problem or the old solution before they learn the new name. We measure both sets of searches and watch the switch month by month.
How long until SEO for startups pays off?
Pages for new category words can rank within months because few rivals have written about them yet; broad terms take much longer. We start with the searches that cost the most per click, so the organic work replaces paid spend first.
Do you work with startups outside Charlotte?
Yes. We are based in Charlotte, and most of our startup work is national because a young company needs the whole market. The method is the same everywhere; the category, the competitors and the runway change.
Can you help with numbers for investors?
Yes. We track cost per customer, payback and growth by channel from day one and report them monthly in a form you can drop into an investor update, built from your ad, analytics and billing data.
