Hotel marketing that wins the guest before the travel site does

Charlotte-area hotel searches peak in March and July, resort searches from Charlotte travelers more than triple in spring, and the pool, pet and boutique searches each keep their own calendar. We plan search, your Google hotel listing, social ads and email around those months, and we count direct bookings, room nights and guests who come back.

  • 550,000searches for "hotels" in the Charlotte area in March and in July 2026, against 301,000 in November
  • 3.5xmore "resorts" searches from the Charlotte area in April 2026 than in October 2025
  • $1.05 to $2.96estimated cost of one click on "hotels in charlotte nc"
  • 10xswing in "hotels with pool" searches between January and April 2026, Charlotte area

The short answer

What should hotel marketing change first?

Good hotel marketing moves the guests who were going to find you anyway onto your own booking engine, then spends on the dates and searches the travel sites leave open.

Most hotels we look at buy guests twice: once through a travel site’s commission, and again through ads that send clicks to a page that is slower and harder to book than the travel site. Guests searching your hotel by name, past guests and nearby weekend travelers should book direct, and the Google hotel listing, Google Ads for hotels, social ads, SEO for hotels and email decide whether they do. We plan them as one calendar built on the search months, and we read the results as direct revenue, room nights and cost per booking, never as clicks.

What hotels and resorts need their marketing to solve.

These are the pressures we see in hotel ad accounts and booking engines. They are why a hotel plan is built differently from a venue’s or a vacation rental’s.

  • Your own name, booked on your own site

A guest who searches the hotel by name is already yours. When travel sites bid on that name and win the click, a guest you earned pays them a commission.

  • The searches chains cannot own

In the Charlotte area a single chain is searched by name about 8,100 times a month. An independent hotel wins on neighborhood, amenity and getaway searches instead, where the brand name does not decide.

  • Shoulder nights and soft weeks

Hotel searches here dip to their low in November and December. Packages, past-guest offers and local weekend campaigns fill the nights the peak months never touch.

  • A booking engine that keeps up

Guests compare your rate with a travel site in another tab. A slow, multi-step booking page with a higher price loses that comparison no matter how good the ad was.

  • Past guests who book direct next time

Every direct booking gives you an email address a travel site never shares. Pre-arrival, post-stay and seasonal emails turn a single stay into a habit.

  • Photos and reviews that match the room

Guests read recent reviews and look at the pool, the room and the view before they open your site. Current photos and replies to reviews decide many bookings before the first click.

What hotel and resort guests search, and when.

Monthly searches and estimated click costs for searches a hotel or resort competes for. The yearly averages hide the useful part, so the notes below the table read the monthly curve.

Two peaks: March and July
"Hotels" in the Charlotte area ran at 301,000 searches in November and December 2025, then reached 550,000 in March 2026 and again in July 2026. "Hotels near me" peaked in July at 165,000. "Hotels uptown charlotte" rose from about 1,900 in quiet months to 3,600 in July. Budgets set flat across the year spend too much in winter and too little in the two peaks.
Charlotte travelers plan resort trips in spring
"Resorts" searches from the Charlotte area went from 1,900 in October and November 2025 to 6,600 in April 2026. "All inclusive resorts" held near 3,600 in the fall and reached 5,400 in January, June and July. For a beach or mountain resort, Charlotte is a drive-in and fly-out market worth reaching from February.
Amenities have their own calendars
"Hotels with pool" went from 70 searches in January 2026 to 720 in April and June. "Boutique hotel" rose from 480 in the winter to 2,400 in April and July. "Pet friendly hotels" peaked at 1,600 in July. The amenity that sells a room changes with the month, and the ad copy should too.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.

An independent hotel in the city, a resort selling to drive-in markets and a group of small hotels need different plans. Four things decide where a hotel plan starts.

  • Your goals A bigger share of direct bookings, fuller shoulder nights, more group and extended stays, or a strong first season after a renovation. Each starts somewhere else.
  • Your timeline Brand search, the hotel listing and past-guest email can move direct bookings within weeks. SEO for hotels and the neighborhood pages build over a year or more.
  • Your budget and your commission bill What you pay travel sites today sets what a direct booking is worth to you, and so how much a click can cost and still pay off.
  • Your competition Chains with loyalty programs nearby and travel sites bidding on your name change which searches are worth paying for and which ones to leave.

Data sets the monthly budget curve, ties each booking and its revenue to the search, ad or email that started it, and shows when to move money between the city, the getaway and the amenity searches.

  • Independent city hotel

Win your name and your neighborhood

Brand protection, the Google hotel listing with direct rates, neighborhood and amenity search campaigns, and email to every past guest before the March and July peaks.

  • Resort or destination hotel

Sell the trip to drive-in markets

Social and video in the cities guests drive or fly from, search for resort and getaway terms in the planning months, and packages that only exist on your own site.

  • Small hotel group

    One plan, several properties

One account structure by property, shared past-guest lists that cross-sell sister hotels, and reporting by property so budget follows the hotels with open nights.

If a hotel came to us, here is how we would start.

This is the pitch we would give a real client, built for a fictional independent Charlotte hotel with real search data. The hotel, its phone number and its website are invented. Sample data shows the kind of results a campaign like this tracks; it is not a client result and not a promise.

How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent

We would split the account by what the guest is looking for, because each group has its own month, click cost and value. Budget then moves between groups through the year instead of sitting in one pot.

How our negative keyword governance protects the budget

  • Hotel jobs and hiring
  • Chain hotel names and loyalty logins
  • Cheap motels and hourly rooms
  • Timeshare and vacation club offers
  • Hotel supplies and furniture
  • Destinations the hotel does not serve

Hotel searches pull in job seekers, loyalty members looking for their own chain, motel bargain hunters and people searching resorts in other states. Our specialists load these exclusions before launch and review the search terms every week, so the budget stays on guests who could book this hotel.

How we write and test the Google search ads

Each intent group gets message-matched ad copy engineered by our specialists to qualify buyers before the click and lift expected click-through rate.

The Google hotel listing

Hotels are not a Local Services Ads category; the Google hotel listing does this job, and it shows prices. With free booking links, the hotel’s own rate can appear next to the travel sites at no cost per click, and Google hotel ads can place it higher in the peak months. We would keep the direct rate equal to or better than the travel sites, list the pool, parking and pet rooms as amenities, refresh the photos each season and reply to every review.

The Instagram ad

Social ads reach people before they search. In March and late spring they show the pool and the rooms to adults within a short drive, and to people who looked at rooms on the site but did not book.

The email

Past guests are the cheapest bookings a hotel can get, and the email address came from a direct stay. This lands in February, ahead of the March peak, so returning guests book direct before they ever open a travel site.

Hotel marketing in Charlotte, and in the markets your guests come from.

We are based in Charlotte, where hotels sell to business travelers, game and concert crowds, families heading to Lake Norman and locals booking a night away. We plan hotel campaigns for both sides: the guests already searching for a room here, and the Charlotte travelers a beach or mountain resort wants to reach. We also work with hotels and resorts nationwide, each campaign planned on its own market’s search data.

Six booking leaks we fix in hotel ad accounts.

When we take over hotel and resort accounts, these are the places we most often find direct bookings leaking, and what we change first.

  1. Letting travel sites win your own name

When nobody bids on the hotel’s name, travel sites often take that click and the commission that follows. We run a small brand campaign with the direct rate and what booking direct adds, and we watch who else appears on the name.

  2. A flat budget in a two-peak market

Charlotte-area hotel searches nearly doubled between November and March. We set a monthly budget curve from the search data, hold money for March and July and fill the soft months with packages and past-guest offers.

  3. Fighting chains on their brand names

An independent hotel rarely wins a click from someone searching a chain. We move that money to neighborhood, amenity and getaway searches, where the hotel’s own story decides the booking.

  4. Losing the booking at the engine

When tracking stops at the booking engine, ad platforms learn from page views, not stays. We track reservations and revenue across domains and send confirmed stays back to Google and Meta.

  5. One amenity message all year

Pool searches here rose tenfold from January to April, and pet searches peak in July. We rotate the amenity in ads, the listing and the landing page with the month it is searched.

  6. Never writing to past guests

A direct guest’s email address is the cheapest next booking a hotel owns. We build post-stay and seasonal emails that reach past guests before each peak, with an offer that only exists on the hotel’s own site.

Questions hotel owners and managers ask us.

Should a hotel stop listing on travel sites?

Rarely. Travel sites reach guests you would not find on your own. The aim is the mix: let them bring new guests, and make sure the guests who search your name, stayed before or live nearby book on your own site.

How much should a hotel spend on advertising?

It depends on room count, open nights by month, and what you pay travel sites today, because that sets what a direct booking is worth. We start from the searches around the hotel and their click costs, follow the March and July peaks in Charlotte, and adjust as booking and revenue data comes in.

Do Google hotel ads replace search ads?

No, they work together. The hotel listing with free booking links and hotel ads shows your rate beside the travel sites; search ads reach people searching the city, an amenity or a getaway before they reach that listing.

Can a resort outside Charlotte reach Charlotte travelers?

Yes. Charlotte is a strong drive-in and fly-out market: resort searches from the Charlotte area more than tripled from October 2025 to April 2026. We plan social, video and search for those planning months, aimed at the area’s travelers.

Do you work with hotels outside Charlotte?

Yes. We are based in Charlotte and work with hotels and resorts across the US. The method is the same; the peaks, the click costs and the competition change by market.

What do you measure besides bookings?

Direct revenue, room nights, cost per booking, the direct share of all bookings and how many past guests return. A booking count alone cannot tell a one-night stay from a week in a suite, so revenue from the booking engine is part of every report.
