Klaviyo success story · Family plant nursery with an online store

How Creekside Nursery made $5.9K+ from email and text messages in its first week online.

A family nursery in Dallas, North Carolina had a gardening YouTube channel closing in on 100,000 followers, but few of them lived nearby. An online store with sign-up forms and a welcome series by email and text turned viewers into buyers within days.

The challenge.

Creekside Nursery is an 8.5-acre nursery in Dallas, North Carolina, in Gaston County just west of Charlotte, run by husband-and-wife owners Jerry and Jenny Simpson and named a Destination Nursery by the plant brand Proven Winners. Their gardening YouTube channel was nearing 100,000 followers, but almost none of those viewers lived in or passed through their small town.

Selling online was the obvious way to reach that audience, but the owners had tried ecommerce before and knew how quickly the workload could pile up. They needed a store and a marketing setup that could keep selling without them filming a new video every day.

What they did.

Sign-up forms · Email and SMS welcome flow · Product reviews

An online store with Klaviyo from day one
In November 2023 the nursery opened a Shopify store selling perennials, shrubs and seasonal plants direct from the growers, with Klaviyo set up for email and text messages.
Sign-up forms for every device
Several sign-up forms ran at once: one for desktop, one for mobile and a text-only form shown to people already on the email list, so subscribers joined both channels.
A welcome series on two channels
A single welcome flow sent by email, text message or both, depending on how each person signed up. The sign-up discount was shown only to people who had not bought yet.
A loop with YouTube
The welcome flow linked to the YouTube channel, and on YouTube the owners sent viewers to the website. That loop lifted sign-up form conversions significantly.
Fast wins, then reviews
In week two the nursery ran its first Black Friday and Cyber Monday sale, and over that long weekend more than 90% of its Shopify revenue came through Klaviyo. In week three it added Klaviyo reviews.

Why it worked.

Our read on the decisions behind the numbers, and what any business can take from them.

The audience already existed
Video built the trust. Email and text turned that trust into orders, without the owners having to make more videos to sell.
Every viewer had a way to stay in touch
Forms tuned for each device and channel meant a visitor who was not ready to buy still joined the list on day one.
The welcome was personal
People only saw the discount if they needed a nudge, and only got texts if they asked for them, so the first messages felt useful rather than pushy.
Channels fed each other
Emails sent people to the videos and the videos sent people to the store. Each channel made the other one work harder.

How we would run this play for your business.

You do not need a national budget to use the same ideas. This is how Overtop Media Digital Marketing puts them to work in our Klaviyo email and SMS management.

Launch with the list in place
For a new or relaunched store, we set up sign-up forms, the welcome series and abandoned cart messages before the first visitor arrives, as part of our Klaviyo email and SMS management.
Turn followers into subscribers
If you already have an audience on YouTube, Instagram or Facebook, we give it a reason to join your list and a welcome series that leads to the first order.
Local first, then nationwide
For a Charlotte-area business like a Dallas or Gastonia garden center, we pair local search with shipping-ready ecommerce, so nearby shoppers visit and distant fans order online.
A store built to convert
Fast pages, clear products and forms that do not get in the way. Our web design team builds the store your emails send people to.

Who this play fits.

You do not have to be a family plant nursery with an online store to use the same approach. It is a strong fit for:

  • Garden centers and nurseries
  • Local retailers starting to sell online
  • Creators and YouTube channels with products
  • Farms and specialty growers
  • Home and garden brands
  • Any business with an audience but no email list
