IT services and managed service providers

MSP marketing that signs managed IT contracts, not break-fix calls

A managed service provider sells a monthly agreement that runs for years, to owners who only shop when something breaks or a contract ends. We plan search, LinkedIn, Microsoft Ads, email and your Google listing around those moments, and we count discovery calls and signed agreements, not clicks.

  • $26.21low end of the estimated click cost for "managed it services charlotte", against $0.99 for "computer repair charlotte"
  • 880Charlotte-area searches for "managed it services" in January 2026, against 70 to 320 in every other month
  • 520Charlotte-area searches a month that name the city, against 20 for "it services near me"
  • 480Charlotte-area searches a month for "hp it support": people after a vendor help line, not an MSP

The short answer

What should MSP marketing deliver?

MSP marketing should deliver discovery calls with business owners who are ready to switch IT providers, at a cost one signed managed services agreement repays many times over.

In the managed IT accounts we audit, the budget leaks in one place. A campaign bids on "it support" and "it services", and the clicks come from home users with a broken laptop, people looking for a hardware maker's help line and shoppers comparing help desk software. At a Charlotte-area floor of $26.21 a click for the searches that matter, a few of those a day empty the month. Managed service provider marketing works when search ads name the contract and the city, LinkedIn and Microsoft Ads reach owners and office managers before the old contract ends, and SEO for MSP pages cover each service and town you support. We judge every channel by cost per discovery call and by signed agreements.

What managed service providers need their marketing to solve.

These are the pressures we see in MSP and IT services accounts, from a three-technician shop to a regional provider with a security practice. They are why IT services marketing is planned differently from the rest of business services.

  • Buyers who only shop at a breaking point

Owners rarely look for a new IT provider while things work. They look after an outage, a breach scare or a contract renewal, and the provider in front of them that week wins the meeting.

  • Expensive clicks with a lot of noise

The searches that sign contracts start above $20 a click, and the same words pull home users, vendor support seekers and software shoppers. Every one of them has to be kept out.

  • Trust before the first call

An owner is handing over passwords, data and payroll systems. Reviews, certifications, response times and a named local team are checked before anyone fills in a form.

  • Spend judged by recurring revenue

One agreement pays every month for years. Cost per lead looks high next to other trades; the right yardstick is cost per signed agreement against what that client is worth.

  • A page for every service and town

Managed IT, help desk, cloud moves, phones and compliance support are searched separately, and buyers name their city. Each needs its own page.

  • More than one decision maker

The owner signs, the office manager feels the pain and an outside accountant or attorney often weighs in. Each one needs a reason to say yes.

Contracts are shopped in January
"managed it services" drew 880 Charlotte-area searches in January 2026, against 70 to 320 in every other month, and "managed service provider" jumped to 720 that January from 70 to 140. The city-named search runs on its own rhythm: "managed it services charlotte" hit 1,000 in October 2025 and 880 in March 2026, and fell to 90 in June.
Charlotte buyers name the city
"managed it services charlotte", "it support charlotte" and "it company charlotte" add up to about 520 Charlotte-area searches a month. "it services near me" has 8,100 searches across the US but only 20 here, and "managed it services near me" 10. Local business owners type the city, so the pages and ads have to carry it.
The cheap clicks are someone else
"computer repair charlotte" averages 390 searches a month at a low end of $0.99: home users with one broken machine. "hp it support" and "microsoft it support" draw 480 each, mostly people after a vendor help line, and "helpdesk system" shoppers want software, at $33.75 a click. None of them signs an agreement.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.

A help desk shop for local offices, a provider with a compliance niche and one selling co-managed IT to firms with their own staff need different plans. Four things decide where an MSP plan starts.

  • Your goals More fully managed clients, a new vertical such as healthcare or law, more project work, or a security add-on sold to the clients you have. Each starts with a different campaign.
  • Your timeline Search catches owners shopping now. LinkedIn, email and service pages build the pipeline for the next renewal season, so planning for January starts in the fall.
  • Your client value What a client pays per month, and for how long, sets what a discovery call can cost. A ten-seat office and a two-hundred-seat firm justify very different bids.
  • Your competition National providers and franchise IT brands bid on the broad terms. A regional MSP wins on its towns, its verticals and the response time it can promise.

Data ties each discovery call to the search, page or ad that started it, follows it through the proposal and the signed agreement, and shows which services and towns bring clients who stay.

  • Local fully managed IT

Offices of 10 to 100 people

City-named search, a strong map listing with reviews, and service pages for each town and service you cover.

  • Vertical specialist

    Healthcare, legal, financial, construction

Search and LinkedIn by industry and title, pages that speak to that vertical’s compliance and software, and referral partners.

  • Co-managed IT

Firms with an internal IT person or team

LinkedIn and Microsoft Ads to IT managers and finance leads, with offers built around projects, coverage and a second pair of hands.

If a managed service provider came to us, here is how we would start.

This is the pitch we would give a real client, built for a fictional Charlotte MSP with real search data. The provider, its phone number and its website are invented. Sample data shows the kind of results a campaign like this tracks; it is not a client result and not a promise.

How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent

We would group the account by what the buyer is ready to buy. City-named and contract searches get the most budget; support, consulting and project terms each get their own ads and pages, so spend follows the searches that turn into signed agreements.

Managed IT in Charlotte

The core of the plan: owners comparing providers in their city. Budget rises in January and again in the spring and fall, when these searches peak.

Provider and outsourcing

Buyers who already know they want to outsource. Smaller searches with clear intent, sent to a page that explains the agreement and the onboarding.

Support and help desk

The biggest group and the noisiest. It runs on exact and phrase match with the heaviest negative list, and only in the hours a business owner is at work.

Consulting and projects

Project work opens the door to a managed agreement. A phone system or a cloud move is often the first invoice with a new client.

How our negative keyword governance protects the budget

  • Home computer, phone and printer repair
  • Hardware and software makers’ support lines
  • Help desk and ticketing software
  • IT jobs, salaries, certifications and training
  • Big consulting firm names
  • Router, Wi-Fi extender and home network setup

With most contract clicks starting above $20 in the Charlotte area, one day of home users and help line seekers can cost more than a discovery call. Our specialists build these lists before launch and read the search terms every week.

The LinkedIn ad

Owners rarely search until the old contract is ending. This ad reaches owners, office managers and finance leads at Charlotte-area companies of the right size in the fall, ahead of the January peak in contract searches, so Larkwhistle is already known when they start comparing.

  • Discovery calls and formsCalls and form requests recorded in Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, LinkedIn and analytics, by keyword group and landing page, apart from support calls from current clients.
  • Proposals from the CRMEach proposal tied to the click that started it, so the reports show which searches lead to a quote and not only to a call.
  • Signed agreements and seatsSigned agreements and the number of users they cover sent back to the ad platforms as offline conversions, so bidding favors buyers who sign.

MSP marketing from Charlotte, for providers everywhere.

We are based in Charlotte, where law firms, medical practices, builders and banking suppliers keep a lot of managed service providers busy. Owners here search for IT with the city in the words, so we plan pages and ads by the towns you can reach on site within your response time. We work with managed service providers and IT services firms across the Charlotte region and nationwide.

Six growth leaks we fix in MSP ad accounts.

When we take over managed IT and IT services accounts, these are the places we most often find discovery calls leaking, and what we change first.

  1. Broad match on "it support"

The phrase pulls home repair, vendor help lines and software shoppers at business prices. We move the support terms to exact and phrase match, add the negatives first and run them only in business hours.

  2. Counting support calls as leads

Current clients calling the help desk number from an ad look like new business. We give ads their own tracked numbers and count only new discovery calls as conversions.

  3. Going quiet before January

Contract searches in the Charlotte area peaked in January 2026. We raise the search budget for that month and start LinkedIn and email in the fall, so the meetings are booked before it.

  4. One generic services page

Owners search by service and by city. A single "IT services" page loses to providers with a page for help desk, cloud, phones and each town, so we build those pages first.

  5. Judging on cost per lead alone

A $333 lead looks costly until one agreement pays every month for years. We report cost per signed agreement next to cost per call, so good campaigns are not cut too early.

  6. No answer to the switching fear

Owners worry that changing providers breaks something. Pages and ads that explain the handover win more calls, so we lead with the plan for the move, not a list of services.

Questions managed service providers ask us.

Why are MSP clicks so expensive?

Because one client is worth a monthly payment for years, many providers bid on the same few hundred local searches. In the Charlotte area, "managed it services charlotte" starts at about $26 a click. The answer is not a lower bid but fewer wasted clicks and pages that turn more visits into calls.

When do businesses look for a new IT provider?

In our Charlotte data, contract searches jumped in January 2026, and the city-named searches peaked in October 2025 and March 2026. Outages and security scares bring searches all year, so search runs year round and the budget rises for the peaks.

Is LinkedIn worth it for an MSP?

Often, for providers who sell to firms of 20 people or more, because it reaches owners and office managers before the contract ends. For a shop selling to very small offices, search, the map listing and referrals usually bring calls at a lower cost.

What does SEO for MSP involve?

Pages for each service you sell and each town you support, written for the questions owners ask before switching, plus a complete map listing with reviews. Most of the searches that sign agreements name a city or a service, so those pages carry the most weight.

Do you work with MSPs outside Charlotte?

Yes. We are based in Charlotte and plan MSP marketing strategies for managed service providers nationwide. The method is the same everywhere; the towns, the verticals, the seasons and the competition change.

What do you measure besides leads?

Discovery calls, proposals, signed agreements, users covered, cost per agreement and how long new clients stay. Support calls from current clients are kept out of the numbers so they cannot inflate the results.
