CPAs and accounting firms

CPA marketing that wins business clients, not just returns

People search for a CPA every month of the year, while tax prep searches crowd into ten weeks. We plan search, LinkedIn, social ads, your Google listing and client email around the business and advisory clients who stay for years, and we fill the calendar outside the season, not only inside it.

  • 1,900Charlotte-area searches for "cpas" in January 2026 and again in October 2025: the demand barely moves all year
  • 22,200Charlotte-area searches for "tax preparation services" in February 2026, against 140 in July
  • $24.14low end of the estimated Charlotte click cost for "small business accountant", against $4.29 for "cpa near me"
  • 590Charlotte-area searches for "business tax preparation" in January 2026, against 10 to 70 in every other month

The short answer

What should CPA marketing be measured on?

CPA marketing should be measured on new clients by type, and on the yearly fees each one brings, so a business client on a monthly engagement is never counted the same as a one-time return.

A tax season inquiry is not a client relationship. In the accounting firm accounts we review, budget usually goes to cheap seasonal searches the firm has no capacity to take in March, while the business owners searching in summer and fall find nobody advertising. We plan CPA Google ads, service pages and SEO for accounting firms, Facebook and Instagram ads, LinkedIn and client email as one system, sized to the partners’ calendar, and we measure cost per consultation and per signed engagement by service line.

Instead of generic tax-season promotions, our specialists build year-round CPA firm marketing strategies combining CPA digital marketing and targeted CPA ads that bring in business advisory, bookkeeping and fractional CFO retainers.

What CPAs and accounting firms need their marketing to solve.

These are the pressures we see at CPA practices and accounting firms. They are why a firm’s plan is built differently from a bank’s, a lender’s or an insurance agency’s.

  • A season that fills itself

From February to April the phones ring on their own and the team is at capacity. New marketing has to bring the clients who start in May, not more returns in March.

  • Business clients worth far more

A business on monthly accounting, payroll and tax planning is worth many individual returns. The plan is weighted toward them even though they search less.

  • Advisory work beyond compliance

Tax planning, fractional CFO and advisory services carry higher fees but few people search for them. Existing clients are the first audience.

  • Referrals from attorneys and bankers

Many of the best clients arrive from an attorney, a banker or a financial advisor. Those referrals deserve tracking next to the paid channels.

  • Professional rules on advertising

Who may use the CPA title, testimonial and claims rules, and state board requirements shape every ad, page and review request.

  • Price shoppers and franchise searches

Many local tax searches are for national tax chains or the cheapest return. A firm selling expertise has to keep those clicks out of the budget.

The CPA search runs all year; tax prep is a ten-week spike
"cpas" held between 1,600 and 1,900 Charlotte-area searches every month from October 2025 to September 2026, and "cpa near me" never fell below 590. "tax preparation services" went from 40 in October 2025 to 22,200 in February 2026 and back to 140 by July. A firm that only advertises in tax season competes for the crowded spike and is silent for the steady demand.
Business owners search outside the season
"small business accountant" peaked at 140 Charlotte-area searches in July 2026, and "accounting services for small business" jumped to 320 the same month, against 10 to 90 in the other months. The business clients a firm wants most go looking when the tax season is over and the partners have time to meet them.
Business returns arrive first, and cost the most
"business tax preparation" reached 590 Charlotte-area searches in January 2026 and stayed between 10 and 70 the rest of the year, ahead of the individual peak in February and March. Business searches also carry the highest click costs in the trade: about $20 to $24 at the low end for business accountants, against $3 to $5 for most individual tax searches.

Our approach: it depends, and the data decides.

A two-partner tax practice, a growing firm with an advisory team and a firm that serves one industry need different plans. Four things set the starting point.

  • Your goals More business clients, advisory and CFO engagements, a niche such as construction or medical practices, or a fuller summer. Each starts with a different campaign and page.
  • Your timeline Search brings consultations within weeks. Service pages, SEO, reviews and referral relationships build over a year and lower what each new client costs.
  • Your capacity by month How many new clients the team can onboard in each month sets the budget curve, so marketing never pushes work into a season that is already full.
  • Your professional rules State board rules, the use of the CPA title, testimonial limits and your own review policy shape every ad, page and review request. We build them in from the start.

Data sets the client mix and the monthly budget curve, ties every consultation and signed engagement back to the search, ad, page or referral that started it, and moves budget toward the months when the team can take on new clients.

  • Tax-focused practice

Fewer one-time returns, more year-round clients

Business tax and planning searches before and after the season, and email that turns this year’s return clients into planning clients.

  • Business services firm

    Monthly accounting and advisory engagements

Small business accountant and fractional CFO searches, LinkedIn for owners and finance leaders, and service pages for each engagement.

  • Niche firm

Own one industry in the region

Pages, ads and content for one kind of client, such as contractors, medical practices or nonprofits, so the firm wins the searches generalists ignore.

How our specialists segment search demand by buyer intent

The firm would not bid on national tax chains, free filing or the cheapest return. The account is split by client type, so business clients get the biggest share of the budget even though they search less, and each group has its own page, offer and conversion value.

Business clients

The most valuable clients and the costliest clicks. Run all year with a partner consultation as the offer, and raised from May to September, when owners look and partners have time.

How our negative keyword governance protects the budget

  • National tax chains and their locations
  • Free filing, refund status and IRS account searches
  • Tax software and accounting software brands
  • Accounting jobs, CPA exam and degree searches
  • Big 4 firms and firm rankings
  • Tax debt relief companies and settlement offers

Tax season fills local searches with people looking for a chain office, a free return or their refund. Our specialists exclude those, job seekers and software shoppers before launch, and review search terms every week so the budget reaches people who want a CPA firm.

Each intent group gets message-matched ad copy engineered by our specialists to qualify buyers before the click and lift expected click-through rate.

A Google listing that shows the partners and the services

Accounting is not one of the Local Services Ads categories; tax services is, so a firm with a tax practice can test it there. The map is won with the firm’s Google Business Profile: every service listed, the partners’ photos, hours that change for the season and a reply to every review, written within the testimonial rules your state board sets.

CPA marketing from Charlotte, for a region full of growing businesses.

We are based in Charlotte, where new companies, relocating headquarters and owner-led businesses from Uptown to Ballantyne, Huntersville, Matthews and Rock Hill all need an accounting firm they can grow with. That is why we plan around the kinds of businesses in each part of the region, not only around the city name. We also work with CPA and accounting firms nationwide; the tax calendar and the professional rules are much the same everywhere, while the competitors, the state boards and the local search demand change.

Six growth leaks we fix in accounting firm marketing.

When we take over marketing for CPA and accounting firms, these are the places we most often find clients and budget leaking, and what we change first.

  1. Spending most in the busiest months

Budgets often peak in February and March, when the team is already full. We move spend to the months when partners can meet new clients and business owners are looking.

  2. Paying for chain and free filing searches

Local tax searches are full of people looking for a national chain or a free return. We exclude them so the budget reaches people who want a CPA firm.

  3. One page for every kind of client

Business owners, individuals and finance leaders land on the same home page. We build a page for each client type and service, with the partner who leads it.

  4. Counting calls, not engagements

A price question in March and a business on monthly accounting count the same in most reports. We send signed engagements and their fees back to the ad platforms.

  5. No path from return to advisory

Clients who only file once a year are rarely offered more. We keep email and planning invitations running after the season, so returns turn into year-round work.

  6. Referrals left out of the reports

Attorneys, bankers and advisors send some of the best clients, and nobody tracks them. We tag every new client with its source, so those relationships get the attention they earn.

Questions CPAs and accounting firms ask us.

What should an accounting firm spend on marketing?

It depends on the clients you want more of, how many your team can take on each month and what each type is worth a year. We start from the searches in your market and their click costs, set a budget by client type and month, and adjust it as signed engagements show what each channel returns.

Should we advertise during tax season?

Selectively. Tax season brings the most searches and the cheapest clicks, but many come from people looking for a chain or the lowest price, and your team is already full. We open business tax campaigns in January, keep individual returns tied to planning, and put the larger budget in the months when you can onboard new clients.

Can accounting firms run Local Services Ads?

Not as accounting. Google lists tax services as a Local Services Ads category but not accounting, so a firm with a tax practice can test it for that work, while the Google listing, reviews and local search carry the rest.

How do you market advisory and CFO services?

Mostly to the right people, not to the most people. Few search for them, so we pair a small search campaign with LinkedIn to owners and finance leaders, pages for each engagement and email to existing business clients, who are the likeliest to buy.

Do you work with accounting firms outside Charlotte?

Yes. We are based in Charlotte and work with CPA and accounting firms nationwide. The method is the same in every state; the competitors, the state board rules and the local search demand change.

Can we use client reviews and testimonials?

Usually, within the rules. State boards and professional standards limit misleading claims and some testimonial uses, and a firm’s own policy matters too. We set up review requests and pages to fit your rules, and keep a record of what was approved.
